If the ND basketball team had a 2 year run of high level success 10 years ago or so would that have made ND any less of a football school?

(BTW, you misspelled "whiny" in your little insult title there under your username. If you're gonna talk shit maybe govern yourself a little better, okay buddy?)
In his defense he misplaced his dictionary. If only there were way more convenient ways to spell check....

If I recall correctly, the language around a buyout for another team to take him was pretty generous. It actually wouldn't cost that much to poach him.
That's what I read.

Curt Cignetti's new contract with Indiana features two distinct buyout clauses: if he leaves for another job, his buyout is $15 million, decreasing over time. If Indiana fires him without cause, they owe him 100% of his remaining contract, which amounts to $92 million over eight years

This had the potential to be a hoot at r/cfbmemes. The top comment was a Hoosier giving shit to the Tennessee/Southern Methodist fan who posted (and quickly retracted) it. The Klan used to literally run the State of Indiana, though they were obviously anti-Catholic and anti-immigrants like Knute Rockne. The whole world outside of ND was gonna burn. (Figured it belonged here in the absence of a true Indiana thread.)

Great story about ND beating the crap out of the Klan:

"In less than three years, Stephenson grew the Indiana membership to more than 425,000 people, more than that of Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia combined."

"The crowd called forth Harry Stuhldreher, the football team quarterback who would be immortalized five months later as one of the Four Horsemen. He reared back and let loose a potato from his cannon of an arm. The crowd leaned in as it traced a perfect arc … and went wild when the light bulb exploded in a shower of sparks. Just kids having a rip-roaring time."

You watch this team play and it's incredibly obvious that they're well coached. They do just about everything not only right, but nearly error free. They tackle very well.

I think the first test for Cig at IU is going to be if/when assistants start peeling off to take other opportunities. What's his reach going to look like when he has to go out and hire replacements?

They're really solid on the field. Very few mistakes, everyone knows their assignment, does their job and they don't miss tackles.

Yes, and they might be the best team in the country.
That is just crazy to me. I'm being serious when I ask because I'm genuinely curious to what everyone thinks.

I mean I'm not saying they AREN'T I guess but it's just so hard to believe. It's Indiana FOOTBALL. not basketball. 🤣

Do you guys really think Indiana is the 2nd best team in the country? I don't. I think they are pretty good don't get me wrong but it's freaking Indiana football man.
I think they're certainly top five. Oregon's only loss is to IU. Illinois now has three losses, which makes me question Indiana a little bit more, but they're rolling over teams that not too long ago would beat them without incident.

They're very good. I've caught up on some of their games recently and watched how they play. They're pretty clean. Disciplined, excellent tackling, everyone is where they're supposed to be, they communicate with each other on the field, etc. Very well coached. They execute more often than not.

We'll see how they stack up on a neutral field against Ohio State and in the playoff, but right now, outside of tOSU and a couple of others I don't know who beats them.

This is true. They aren't playing any close games are they. So what is going on in Bloomington?? Are they backing up the Brinks money trucks?

What I think is going on is they're using NIL and The Portal, they're very well coached and we're living in a new era of the sport. Yes, IU isn't supposed to be good at football, but right now they are. You also have two Los Angeles schools in the Big Ten. Nothing really makes sense anymore and times have changed.

Of course, change is always welcome and easily adapted to in society. Nothing to fear, Donnie. These men are cowards.

They have decided to jump into the money game 100%. NIL, portal, coaches salaries, upgrades, renovations, etc.

Spending money on BB players as well.

I definitely think their top 5. I keep coming away from every game of theirs impressed with the d-line. They are relentless. Coached by our very own Pat Kuntz

I honestly think the Aggies are better on a neutral field. Maybe some ND scheduling bias there, but having seen enough of TAMU and IU along with their opponents, I think TAMU beats IU on a neutral field.

It's the portal, but they also have a very senior team

QB Fernando Mendoza - 2100 yards, 25 TDs - Senior, transfer
RB Kaelon Black - 619 yards 4 TDs - 6th year senior, transfer
RB Roman Hemby - 601 yards 5 TDs - 5th year senior, transfer
WR Elijah Surratt - 609 yards 10 TDs - Senior, 2x transfer
WR Omar Cooper - 669 yards, 8 TDs, Junior
WR EJ Williams - 336 yards, 5 TDs, 6th year senior, transfer
TE Riley Nowokowski - 181 yards, 1 TD, 5th year senior, transfer

DB Louis Moore - 57 tackles, 5 INTs - Senior, transfer
LB Aiden Fisher - 47 tackles, 2.5 sacks, int - Senior transfer
DL Kellan Wyatt - 28 tackles, 2.5 sacks - Senior, transfer
DL Tyrique Tucker - 4.5 sacks - Junior, Transfer

C Pat Coogan - 5th year senior, transfer
RT Kahlil Benson - 5th year senior, transfer
LG Drew Evans - Senior, transfer

They're facing at least 13 departures from their starting line up this year. Cig clearly has a good portal strategy and ID of talent, but this feels a bit like an enhanced FSU trajectory where they will have some years of dominance, and some of utter disappointment. Just too much variation when relying on the portal.

I imagine if they played Bama, UGA, or A&M they would be more likely to lose than not, but the SEC teams haven’t been consistent this year (or last) so it’s hard to say with any real confidence who wins those games.

I think ND beats Indiana unless it comes down to kicking.

I think any of those three and Ohio State can beat IU on a neutral field. You have to be talented, disciplined and well coached to beat IU right now. @notredomer23 points out they have a lot of seniors on their team. Guys who are 22-24 years old and have been playing college ball for 4-6 years. That experience pays off right now.

Coming off of that BC game, I honestly don't know if ND could beat IU right now. That game likely takes place either in Bloomington or on a neutral field. We'll see. Cross that bridge when I get there.

Thanks fellas. All great takes. I'm not sure I like the whole NIL situation but I guess I just have to get with the times.

Hell, I'm so old school I still want the 59,075 seat stadium back. 🤣
