I think we are stressing wayyy too much on the AP and Coaches Poll, which are useless with the new format. I know several posters have shown the computer rankings have us as a Top 5 team and someone mentioned previously the strong correlation between the computers and the playoff committee's rankings. Go Irish!

I mean, we'll see when the first CFP rankings come out. But basically if we win our games we should be fine, just need a few more cars in front of us to crash out. Which, this being college football, they will.

Computer Rankings Round-Up (where updated):

DokterEntropy: 3 (Most Accurate so far this year)
Sargarin: 2
Teamrankings.com: 3
Massey: 2
ESPN FPI: 4

Pretty wild, it’s like the opposite of the Kelly era where we racked up wins against sub par opponents while the computers / Vegas knew we weren’t that good. We’re a legitimate title contender.

OSU is significantly above everyone else at this point, where it looks like we’d be a ~4pt dog to them on a neutral field.

I told you wrong. I didn't realize that Donchess is DRatings and they're part of PT.

They are so good at what they do.

USC would absolutely be ranked if the CFP poll were today. CFP rankings use analytics to help decide amongst the 1 loss, 2 loss, etc teams.

My $.02 not that it means anything: we just whooped GA, BYU, IU, and GT last year. That’s 4 of the 12 ranked ahead.

And Vandy is fools gold, although they just jumped us. That’s 5 of the 12.

The rest outside of OSU is a coin flip. Any team can win those games although our trajectory is better.

OSU, well, let’s just hope for our best day. We’re due.

I knew they were going to jump Vandy above us just based on how last week's poll went. BYU is the most overrated team in the rankings. This year's SMU that every CFP team is hoping to get in the first round so they can James Franklin a "big win."
BYU did the same shit last year, too. Squeaking out wins against mediocre teams, just scraping by. It caught up to them last year, I think it will catch up to them again this year too.

I think we can now safely start looking at the college football landscape as a whole. There will be many games each week until the end of the season that will affect NDs playoff positioning. In general, I will root for the favorites in all power 4 conferences to keep winning in ranked on ranked matchups. For example, Alabama and Georgia continuing to beat other 2 and 3 loss SEC teams. Ohio St, Indiana, and Oregon continuing to beat 1 and 2 loss Big 10 teams. And we will see an upset or two each week a la Louisville over Miami or Arizona St over TTech.

9 spots are absolute locks:

3 B1G, 3 SEC, ACC/B12 champ, G5 highest ranked

Leaves 3 seats at the table. Yes, keep the top at the top and have them clean up the 2 loss teams.

Honestly a little surprised by 12. Figured 10 or 11.
BYU and Vandy jumped us. Annoying to beat USC by ten and get jumped but neither of those teams have anywhere near the probability of winning out that we do, so not worried.
Seems likely we’ll make the playoffs but highly unlikely we get a home game.

BYU is kind of irrelevant since a Big12 team is getting in anyways

Don't let Miami beat us because of an NFL level one handed catch and a keystone kops interception. Totally different story.

And yes I understand we were starting a freshman QB.

Does any 3 loss non conference team get in ahead of us? I don’t think so.

Does any two loss non conference championship game participant jump us?

We now have to become usc fans. That hurts.

If they are as good of a Big 10 team as they think they are then they should win every game left on their schedule, with the exception of Oregon.

Along with winning out, USC beating Oregon would be nice.

The Holy Trinity of Implosion is beginning, Ole Miss and Miami both lost.

Historically, those two teams and A&M end with a bunch of shitty losses after dropping their first game of the season. They just inexplicably quit.

I know Miami and A&M fading doesn’t help, but it wouldn’t shock me if one or both does.

The danger with Miami or A&M is if either are 10-2, and we are 10-2, they would be ahead of us. But depending on who they lose to, those teams could also be ahead of us.

I’m not sure that’s true. There are endless cases of teams being ahead of a team they lost to earlier in the season. Heck, USC is ranked behind Meatchicken, who they just destroyed.

When you lose and how you are perceived to be playing now matters just as much.
