I have to admit after NIU I was fully on board to get rid of him. Have never been so glad to have been so incredibly wrong.
I’ve always, always been drawn to ND for several reasons; one of which has been its desire to win “the right way.” But after the absolute embarrassment that was NIU, I told a friend, “Fuck it, bring on Urban Meyer!” (@Merckxe525 stated this past Winter that Urban would take the job.) We all feel you, bro.

That must have been so awesome! I didn't even know that ncaaf recruiting sites existed til Kerry Neal committed, I think it was 2007 and it came across ESPN's botton line. I immediately found some message boards and I've been addicted ever since lol

Being in the stadium that day was maybe my worst experience as an ND fan. People weren’t pissed walking out—it was pure dejection—like the reality was setting in that MFMF wasn’t going to be what we all hoped he would be bc of all the intangibles.

I was pretty public on here thinking that MFMF should get canned if he couldn’t rally and make the playoffs…which obviously the rest is history.

Last year’s June crootin’ is whatever for anyone who has actually followed recruiting closely for any period of time. And, objectively, it seems like post-natty NOW we’re able to just drop bags at will whereas last summer I think donors and the university were sort of still in “show us” mode.

But man, you can’t blame anyone for being a little angsty after NIU. Marshall you could almost forgive. But that NIU game was just so weird on all levels. I had on a damn sweatshirt and was chilly in the stadium the weekend after Labor Day. The entire day was just a weird vibe and the game followed suit.

What a wild and awesome ride since that point. It’s why we all love/hate sports.

I said to myself probably 100 times after the NIU game, "I love the guy as a person, but he just can't cut it as a coach, and this is why you don't hire first time head coaches at a place like ND."

Boy, am I happy with how wrong I turned out to be.

I think we all are, I don't know many, if any, ND fans who felt confident that MFMF was sticking around after that debacle. The turnaround was incredible. The players seemed to really buy in and defend their guy. The culture he built is incredible, and now we're really seeing the ceiling raised on recruiting, which we all thought was going to be his strength. But as a motivator and a football coach? We all thought that would take some time, and since last September, I think we can confidently say he's hitting his stride there, as well.

There were more than a few of us not clutching pearls that believed ND needed to stay the course and let the man grow.

Talk about a time to be alive.

The 1995 class. These dudes were only a year older than I was. I remember seeing a lot of them on visits at games and at the spring game.

Mike Rosenthal of Mishawaka, Ind.
Tim Ridder of Omaha, Neb
Jamie Spencer of Monroe, La.
Autry Denson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla
Randy Moss of Belle, W.Va
Jarious Jackson of Tupelo, Miss
kicker Kevin Kopka of Hollywood Hills, Fla.
Antwon Jones of Piqua, Ohio
Jerry Wisne of Jenks, Ok
Jimmy Friday of Sugarland, Texas
Kory Minor of La Puente, Ca
Benny Guilbeaux of Opelousas, La.
Mario Strayhorn of Cincinnati.

The 1990 class was mental. Oscar McBride asked Holtz if Jerome Bettis had committed. Holtz told McBride yes. McBride says "Then I'm coming."

Defeinitely the minority of fans I'd say, but definitely credit where credit is due. It was his third very bad loss in as many years. I'll eat crow on this one

I was at that game with my family and my girlfriend (her first major college football game and first time at ND). Usually after wins, my family and I cook hotdogs in the parking lot waiting for the traffic to die down before going out to some bars. I just turned to my family after the game and said "We're going to mass" (which I never did post game as a student ever), and my girlfriend and I walked silently there. After mass she said "Oh what are we going to do tonight?" and I said "Go to the air bnb, sulk, and drink", to which she responded "Oh hahaha no seriously what are we going to do?".

My wife and I went with my in-laws who are Michigan fans, but have an appreciation for ND. They literally said NOTHING to me after the game because they felt bad for me…which made it so much worse. I would’ve preferred if both the Marshall and NIU fans had also been insufferable assholes, but to the contrary they literally couldn’t have been nicer. Assholes.

I still think that App State was a worse loss for Michigan, but only by a hair

Nah. UM was a bigger favorite and against a D2 school. At least NIU is FBS.
Key difference to me at least is that we had just proven that we were a great team after our win at Texas A&M. Michigan's loss was week 1. Definitely agree theirs was worse at least and I think has more staying power in CFB history as the definition of a crazy upset

Howard beating UNLV as 46pt dogs and ND stopping Oklahoma's record of 47 consecutive wins.

Kory Minor was damn good.

Who’s the dude on here that had an absolute “FIRE FREEMAN” meltdown over the way the staff handled June recruiting last year?

As we’ve seen with on-field results, program management, staff management, etc. etc…

It appear MFMF doesn’t fuck around when it comes to turning mistakes and weaknesses into strengths.

We’re gonna win a fucking natty soon.
I memba...staff went on vacation.
