“Matt Jansen -- Notre Dame's director of scouting with whom Martin previously worked for the Houston Texans.”

Someone always knows someone

“However, several sources told FootballScoop that Watson has been offered the top recruiting position in the Notre Dame football program, a director of player personnel/director of recruiting-type of role.”

Undergrad and grad degrees from Vandy in organizational development and leadership, played DB at Vandy, finalist for SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2003. Dude is a brainiac, will understand the culture at ND. Great get for the Irish.

Having a NFL GM whose played and scouted NFL players is huge and relates to these kids more vs Chad who didn’t even play in highschool he was basically the team manager.

"According to the Lions’ website, Martin’s role with the team was to work “with the college and pro personnel staff to enhance the scouting and roster-building processes.” Martin has held that role with the Lions for all four years with the team. During his time with the Lions, Detroit has become synonymous with expert drafting. In just four drafts, the Lions have selected six Pro Bowlers and three All-Pros.

For the past two seasons, Lions general manager Brad Holmes has specifically mentioned Martin—among a list of others—as one of the key members in their draft preparation."

Never heard of him. Can he coot? If so, all is good.
If I'm understanding the operation right, he's not the crootin guy. He's the guy that tells the crootin guy who to go get. The crootin guy isn't hired yet (going after Watson from Auburn hard).

I'm just going to have to learn to shed the PTSD from previous years. Everytime I think the wheels are falling off, Freeman comes through on his hires. He's very methodical and doesn't panic with staff defection.

It is truly a mind shift from the previous staff. Every defection was cause for a freak out because we never knew what BK was going to do. There was always concern that the next hire was the next BVG. Then the whole Parker thing happened and it truly was a bit of here we go again. But, since that hire (that wasn't as bad as feared) Freeman has nailed it. Now every time a member of the football staff leaves, it's an opportunity to get even better. Truly amazing.

Interestingly enough, I think Freeman's positive treatment of Parker, even though his 1 year experiment as OC failed, is paying dividends. Parker coached with Seider at Marshall and Penn State, and I bet he put a good word in. Freeman gave him a shot as OC, never spoke poorly of him when it was clear it wasn't going to work and helped him land an outside HC job.

Mike Martin has a LOT of scouting experience in addition to his GM role, this could work out extremely well.
