Will he have any say in the other position? Director of recruiting or whatever name for the position they have offered to Watson? I am curious of the dynamics between Freeman/staff and the GM and the other position.

I’m not going to pretend I know this guy or the role, whether this guy is a home run, or just a dud.

Freeman and Bacquva have earned the benefit of the doubt, so I’m in - let’s fucking go.

Not gonna lie, when I saw the name "Mike Martin" in this thread, I immediately thought it was the former Michigan player that ND bungled the recruitment of because they thought Omar Hunter wouldn't flip, and went on to play a few seasons in the NFL. :ROFLMAO:

I am so down for this hire. This guy has a proven track record, and bringing professionalism to the position is a big plus.

Can't help but feel ND is actually working to get better across the whole program, unlike some previous regimes.

The few Michigan/Lions fans I respect say this is a homerun and if ND can pair it with Kenyatta Watson it's a grand slam.

Good enough for me. I suspect Martin will be like a good offensive linemen. If we don't think about him much, he's doing a good job.

That's awesome to hear. Was actually coming here to ask how the Lions' fans were reacting to this.

Former Vandy DB with a bachelors and a masters. Dude checks all the boxes for ND you'd have to say
Good point, Dublin. Having someone with an understanding of the academic component is huge when considering what the GM role entails.

It's the next best thing to hiring someone qualified who also understands the campus dynamics instead of beating their head against the wall, screaming for change.

It sounds like we got another well liked and successful person to help move this football team in the right direction.

Well done Marcus and Pete.

Am I correct in assuming he will report to MF or do we wait until the PC?

Very nice pull. What the Lions have done is one of the best builds in American sports history. I'm pumped.

Gee, really feels like "momentum" is swinging in ND's favor. Like, everything is coming up Freemantastic.

It's like if you wait to see how things play out, things tend to even out. Every job that opens is an opportunity to improve and keep the ball rolling.

Meh, what do I know, though. tHeY mIsSeD oUt On kNoWlEs!!

Ok, we musn't ever allow Mike Martin to leave. Unless he sucks, then we mock him by changing the title of this thread and openly lament on a daily basis how horrible he is until this thread fills with food recipes.

For now, I'll set up a GoFundMe page so we can raise funds to throw at him if he ever decides to take another job.

Is there a "point and laugh" tweet from the USC crowd? This is exactly the type of hire USC wanted to make, but couldn't and overpaid Bowden.

Martin has been on the scouting side going back to 2004. In addition to a very refined eye for talent, the man likely has an enormous network of college and high school coaches. Fantastic hire.

"According to the Lions’ website, Martin’s role with the team was to work “with the college and pro personnel staff to enhance the scouting and roster-building processes.” Martin has held that role with the Lions for all four years with the team. During his time with the Lions, Detroit has become synonymous with expert drafting. In just four drafts, the Lions have selected six Pro Bowlers and three All-Pros.

For the past two seasons, Lions general manager Brad Holmes has specifically mentioned Martin—among a list of others—as one of the key members in their draft preparation."

People need to see how almost flawless Lions drafting has been in the Brad Holmes era

In my opinion, Martin is a far better choice than Blanchard because Martin fully fits the approach Notre Dame is moving toward going forward.
Fully agree, particularly because ND seems to want to get another guy to focus on recruiting solely.

Kenyatta Watson is the name that has been flung out, and I'm not sure they'll get him, but I imagine they'll pluck somebody of a similar level to Watson to fill that new spot.

ND is finally dedicating bodies to the recruiting/scouting department. Something they've DESPERATELY needed to do for years.
