Well there goes our elite recruiting at OL. And no, not every coach can walk in and recruit elite linemen at ND.

Well crap, but

The only other offensive line coach that the Bears have been linked to is Dan Roushar, another guy currently coaching in the college ranks.

“A name to keep an eye on as Bears O-line coach is Dan Roushar,” the Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs reported last week. “He spent 10 seasons with the Saints, where he worked with Dan Campbell. New Orleans had some top-tier O-lines. Roushar previously coached at Illinois & NIU. He’s currently at Tulane, where he’s been since 2023

Good luck to this guy.

ND, a steppingstone for coaching.
It's not just us. I think you're going to see a lot of good college assistants heading to the NFL if/when they can. Being a college assistant just seems like a fucking grind now. Hell, BC's HEAD coach left to be an NFL DC last year.

Yeah. There used to be a heavy distinction between college coaches and NFL coaches, and rarely did they cross that line. When they did, especially at HC, it was usually disastrous. However, with the professionalization of CFB, NIL, students leaving with nothing in return, NFL, somehow, sounds easier to be a coach anymore.

Rudolph (and our other assistants) flew home on Jan. 21 after a season that began with pre-season camp in early August. Then he spent a week re-recruiting his own OL room (to mixed results, in his case) and this week is back out on the road kissing the asses of 17 year olds, which will go on intermittently through December. Spring ball starts in, what, mid-March?
Feels like they get a little down time in February, and a little in May/June, but college coaching is pretty much nonstop. I'm sure NFL assistants have offseason responsibilities too but it's not nearly as much.

Big difference is in the pros they aren't 17 years old, and you don't have to kiss their ass. Best thing about college is there's no parity so if you can get in with an elite program and don't suck your job security is pretty good. NFL job security is pretty bad as hardly any parity means there really are no elite programs who always have better players. An elite QB can kind of mess that up, however.

Elite programs lose assistants every year. It is what it is. It’s Freeman’s Job to get quality replacements.
I honestly feel bad for the people that don't understand this. The notion that Notre Dame can just throw money at assistant coaches to get them to stay in place is truly baffling to me. This isn't how this profession works and it hasn't for decades.

There's one Bud Foster. He's the exception and not the rule.

These are jobs to these guys. They're not fans, their dads and grandfathers were not fans. They go where the opportunity is, and in many cases, it isn't about the money.
