I spent most of my life watching or listening to 162 cub games a year until they won it all. I felt mild relief and haven’t watched a baseball game since. Nothing more. Was amazed that I had cared that much and it literally changed nothing

After the 2011 Michigan game, I became a much more stoic fan and am 99.9% unaffected when they lose. After all, these guys are strangers. I'm not going to let 18-22 year olds who don't even know I exist ruin my evening. 2012 championship? Shrug. 2017 in Miami? Shrug. 2023 Ohio State? Shrug.
But if they get it done tomorrow I will cry like a child. A win tomorrow would mean more to me than any game I've ever watched. I would gladly watch them lose the next 50 if they could beat Ohio fucking State in a national championship.
I am an OSU alumnus. I proudly have my "Ohio State College of Engineering" frame diploma in my office. I loved my time there. Doesnt change anything, my roommate was a Michigan fan and we'd both want Ohio State to lose by 100 every game.
I am a City Manager in Ohio. My Parks Director, 50% of Public Works, and the Manager I replaced but hired to stick around as Manager Emeritus are all Notre Dame fans in a sea of Ohio State fans. We fucking need this win.

It's always 2011 Michigan. It's unbelievable how that game emotionally broke every millennial ND fan to the point that they had to reassess their relationship with the sport.
And I'm not above it. My memory of that night is walking home in the dark ahead of my girlfriend (now wife somehow), drunk, unsuccessfully trying not to cry, and her asking me "Why do you care about this if it just makes you miserable? Isnt this supposed to be fun?"
The good news is that it is fun now. Even when it sucks. It's always fun.

I hosted a party at my apartment. Bought a new flat screen for the Fall. My high school buddies who were then my roommates are all there, and my one friend brings his girlfriend. She's a Michigan fan, but also entirely apathetic to sports. During Michigan's comeback she loudly cheers for BAD FOOTBALL. Denard scrambling around, dodging two sacks, and heaving a bullshit pass. Her cheering made it so much worse because I couldn't be rude and tell her to leave my apartment, and was oblivious to the rest of the room lol
At the end I just got up and quietly walked to my room. Sat in the darkness silently for 30 minutes until everyone left. Came out a new sports fan, and better for it. Now when I see grown men act like children or shout at TVs I just shake my head. They can't hear you. He's not going to get his head around, he still learning how to play the position. God doesn't care.

I'm a Braves fan and watched them win it all in 2021. I was super happy and the good feelings lasted up through the first month of the next season. You always think "if I just win one, I'll be happy with my team for a long time." Doesn't really work that way. But, I care about the Irish more than any other team, and a win would feel extra special because well for a lot of my fanhood it didn't seem possible. There were all these super teams out there, and ND just seemed like they would never make it to the top. We're so close now, might as well seal the deal tomorrow night.

2015 Clemson was when I really thought we'd never win a "big" game maybe ever again.
For context, I became a ND fan during the Bush Push game. Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment, but I picked the losing team on that day, and never looked back.

Agreed. I have long ago past the point of no joy with a win just relief of not losing. It’s a bad addiction that I am desperately hoping with a win Monday I can just be done. Why I havent participated in any recruiting or who the future coach is threads or listened to any of the usual ND podcasts since the orange bowl. I am just praying for a win and then hopefully I am out.

I really think OSU's lack of experience against running QBs is our biggest advantage against this defense. We likely arent going to be able to run right at them, but zone read / option concepts will put these OSU defenders in positions they didnt find themselves all year.
The best run threats they faced were Nico and Dillon Gabriel - hardly comparable to Riley.

Also a Braves fan. Obviously different because I had seen them win it before, but also I (like Shane Gillis mentioned) would straight up delete any other team I'm a fan of from existence if it meant I could see an ND football championship.
Like you indicated, I think the biggest difference is that I genuinely thought I might not get to see ND ever win one.
