if the entire secondary balls out this year as they should, mickens will be tough to keep. He's going to be the coach over 5 of 11 typical defensive starters (including nickel as a typical starter).

This dude is our most valuable coach hands down. We need do give him the world.
Without a doubt. Got to keep him until until a P4 University is ready to hire him as a HC.

I have to imagine is Golden is gone in a year or two. Would love to see Mickens get more and more responsibility so they can seamlessly transition him to DC.

We actually might have Golden for a minute. Someone reported once that he likes being a coordinator and that he might not want to take on the responsibilities of a HC again. And he also likes working for/with MF a lot.

But would being a NFL DC be better than a College DC?

As good as Golden has been, if another team offers Mickens a DC gig I think you have to do whatever it takes to keep him, even if it means nudging Golden to the NFL or to take a HC gig in college. Mickens is not only a terrific coach but a terrific recruiter. Al Washington isn’t exactly killing it on the recruiting trail, to put it kindly, and we need a larger sample size with Bullough in recruiting. When you have someone who is great at coaching, recruiting, and evaluating talent like Mickens, you need to keep him by any means necessary.

Does ND currently have a co-defensive coordinator? He also does a great job with the recruits- give him a higher recruiting title?

Coach Mick has been great!

This is so absurdly ridiculous. Push out the elite DC for a guy that might be a good DC?

I think ND’s best case scenario is to pay Golden and Mickens whatever they ask, keep them both for 3-4 more years, and behind closed doors name Mickens the heir apparent to Golden.

I think for most the answer is going to be yes, especially now with the Portal, NIL, recruiting. I doubt anyone knows what preference Mickens has, but if enough people think highly of you, that word gets to the NFL circles soon enough. We know he can coach DBs and recruit. We don't know what kind of defensive football mind he has or what ambition he has as far as upward mobility.

I also think that we've seen time and time again that assistants come and go but the Gold Dome keeps on spinning. Tony Alford, Mike Elston, Mike Elko, Harry Hiestand, etc. There have been guys that we just can't do without and should give whatever they ask, but life keeps going on. I mean, you've got guys on IE calling Deeland a bum now when two years ago that would have made 99% of ND fans puke coat hangers.

I will still never grasp the concept of football fans that feel their programs need to do anything financially or otherwise to make sure assistant coaches never leave. A profession in which guys are coming and going annually, either by choice or by firing.

Good post.

You have to be honest though his running back recruiting for 25 has been bad. I understand you want to move up to a better title and just like you said we know he can recruit and coach up a player.

Most of us really don't have the capability of knowing who is/isn't a good coach beyond our team and shoot sometimes even on our own staff. People were dogging on O'Leary and he got an NFL gig last year lol. I think we should all be concerned that we won't find as good of a coach/developer of DB talent as Mickens, but that doesn't mean we need to run off an elite college DC and especially prevent Mickens from developing in his career. Shoot look how that turned out for Washington with Kwit/Jimmy Lake.

Assistant head coach. If we’re giving out fake titles, let’s give out one that cannot be beat.

They actually ponied up and gave Elko the money, didn't they? Then he went back to TAMU, they upped their offer and ND said no bidding war?

Yeah. Works great for us. Or he just goes somewhere else and gets to be the DC outright. Title, money, responsibility, the works.

Didn't Deland get this title during this past offseason?

Assistant head coach of defense.
Sounds like corporate bullshit, but whatever.

Some of you guys are full out Sonny from Bronx Tale. A coach comes in and suddenly it's "Now youse can't leave." It's just not at all how this profession works and I'm surprised this exercise continues year after year.

Most of these guys are not going to stay put for more money and jerkoff job titles. Especially at this level.
