I laughed because of the bolded, mostly. I thought some of the Trump comments were over the top and misguided too, but mostly because of the bolded.
Most people think that believing you're a man trapped in a woman's body or a woman trapped in a man's body, and the rest of the transvestite & countless genders stuff is 100% imaginary nonsense, but instead a manifestation of underlying issues and/or neurosis. However, it seems relatively harmless and as long as those who felt this way just lived their lives without being bothered, as you say, we were fine to mostly just leave you alone and let you deal with your issues in your own way.
The problem, and where the anger and pushback comes from, is when that community insisted we had to let biological males into the bathroom with our women & children, pushing this stuff on kindergarteners and elementary school kids, drag queen story hour, pride parades with public sex and perversion, and insisting that the rest of us agree that it's all perfectly fine and trying to silence anyone who opposes it.
Most of us were fine with "We just want to live our lives without being bothered" but to claim that after what's been going on in schools and in public the past several years is disingenuous. That's what I laughed at.
As for engaging with you in a civil and reasonable manner about transgenderism and mental health and related issues, I'd actually be glad to. Like just about everyone, I have at least one relative who's gay, and the child of one of my cousins believes she's a boy and is in the process of transitioning. I'm not without insight or compassion in the matter, and I'd love to hear your story and side of things. I've treated dozens of people with transgender issues. I'm working tonight, but in the next few days I'd be glad to have a civil conversation with you about it that would hopefully be enlightening for us both if you're willing.
