The counter to that is the OC and coaching staff also trotted out Brandon Wimbush over Book after seeing both practice multiple times. Sometimes coaches overthink things.

Also, Angeli has looked better than Leonard in terms of pocket presence and delivery in actual games. That’s not nothing.
2017 was Brian Kelly and Chip Long. I don't know what that has to do with right now.

What significant reps against other teams has Angeli had besides the bowl game? He started against an Oregon State team whose HC left for Michigan State and were with an interim coach.

The point being that the coaches made a mistake and mismanaged the QB position by starting a guy who couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn over a guy who had a cup of coffee in the NFL after watching both practice for quite a long time.

As to Angeli, he managed to beat by a pretty significant margin and with probably the worst receiving corp I’ve seen at ND an Oregon State team that I would wager had about as much talent if not more than NIU.

He also played in a couple other games that season and I believe had a throwing TD during those games as well.

He’s well ahead of Leonard in that regard.

I think it's interesting that we've seen 120 minutes of Leonard while Freeman, Denbrock and Gino have all seen hours upon hours of reps we have not, yet somehow we have people determining who should start this week against Purdue in addition to long term QB planning.

It’s apparently Freeman handicapping the offense. Third year same bull crap offense. -

That wasn't my point. It doesn't matter who the OC is of this program. Everyone seems to know better who QB1 should be despite not being in the building and overseeing practice reps, etc. They've seen more of Angeli, Carr and Minchey than we have. All of them were in that building last year. I have a real hard time thinking they're just putting Leonard out there out of spite unless he's truly the best option. I have that we're having these discussions yet again, but in the end, they've gotta play a better option if they actually have one. They might not.

Was anyone expressing concerns about Leonard after last week? Not really. They won. Had they pulled out a 17-16 squeaker on Saturday, I'm guessing concerns get mentioned, but the overwhelming narrative was survival and 12-0 is still on.
This is called pride. They got big time money for a blah QB and ow have to play him. If they don’t the next NIL request will be denied.

I don't think ND boosters will be the first to blink when it comes to NIL requests.

Lots of people were complaining about Leonard's arm during and after A&M

This is a discussion board. This is what fans do. If none of us are "in the room" what are we even doing here?

Based on what we all witnessed on Saturday, I think the fanbase has a reason to question the staff that has been preparing for hours and hours to put that shit product on the field that we all just watched.

“The backup quarterback is the most popular guy in town”

That quote had literally been around for decades. If we can’t discuss and bitch about the quarterback position, what’s the point of all this?

Also, RL blows. I now know what PJ would have been if he stayed here. I guarantee one of the young guys can be just as bad. Play one, play them all.

Nothing to the point of outbarking the overall fact they won the game.

Basically what I'm hearing is this is some kind of incompetence cocktail loaded with pride, malfeasance and ignorance. I still find it hard to believe with all that was at stake coming into this season.

You're not in the room man, so don't discuss it.

Speaks to a bigger problem that we're constantly having this conversation again, but that's just me.

The issues might go deeper than just QB/Leonard. It's Denbrock's job to sort that out, I suppose. The QB and or OC is always going to be the scapegoat, but I think there is more to it and if you start ripping up the offense completely and or changing QB1 as a knee jerk reaction to a loss, you're going to suffer far greater frustrations.

Play them all and I think not much changes. We've been wearing this "Tight End U" badge like it's something awesome for years, and I think there is something to be said about the last few offensive identities under BK and what we've seen to being Freeman's tenure that are making Riley Leonard a symptom rather than the disease.

Personally, I never understood taking RL this year when he only had one year of eligibility. Didn’t seem like the kind of guy who step in and play well right away. Hartman you could see because of his experience. So now we’ve got a guy who is mediocre and won’t be back next year. This means the guys who will be back won’t be getting many reps. For the most part, quarterbacks get better with more reps. All we’ve done is stunt our future so we can have mediocrity today.

I would've hoped that having Uncle Al and Uncle Mike in the room in part was to have a couple of more experienced uncles around to tell Marcus "no." This guy already had one surgery before he came here and then had another one since. This really isn't the time for pride or to honor NIL investments. If it was at all clear that Leonard wasn't the guy prior to TAMU or going into NIU, that's definitely a problem.

People were absolutely complaining and worried. Most optimistically chalked it up to Denbrock wanting to keep everything short and quick to limit mistakes and neutralize a great defense.

Turns out Riley Leonard just fucking blows. If he’s the best QB we have on the roster we are truly fucked.

Amen…there are lot of issues contributing to the lack of success here. It’s starts with the coaching staff and includes the QB, Oline and WRs. When Leonard throws an absolute perfect ball and Greathouse drops the pass common sense tells me that is on the WR not the QB

I don’t think I’m Bill Walsh but I did just watch Notre Dame lose to Directional Illinois with some of the worst QB play I’ve seen in 30 years as a fan. So maybe it’s reasonable to express frustration and want a change on a fan message board dedicated to Notre Dame football.

What about when he has perfect protection on 2nd and 1 and ignores 3 wide open receivers to underthrow a double covered WR

Sorry didn’t mean it as a joke had health problems and game sucked so catching up on posts from last two days and 75% are from that lame ass blue cartoon dog and stood out that said initially I didn’t watch the game. Then went on to Frazier Crane all of us for having the feels. So asking if the opinionated good doc has watched the game yet seems fair.

Mitchel was not double covered and Mitchel had his man beat by a few steps. That should have been a TD. Riley was late on the throw and severely under threw the ball. That is 100% on Riley.

My point I’m trying to make is you can’t place all the blame on Riley Leonard. First and foremost the blame goes to the coaches, specifically the head coach Marcus Freeman.

Looked better than Riley for sure. Took a couple of questionable sacks where he could have easily thrown the ball away.
I’m halfway convinced that this was due to Steve intentionally waiting too long because he was trying too hard to make plays through the air, since he knows that it would add to his argument for starter.

Steve has been watching Riley throw the past few games and isn’t stupid. If I’m Steve, I’m coming into garbage time with the mindset that I’m dropping dimes and throwing TDs so that I can show the team what they’re missing. Throwing it away or running myself too often gets me nowhere.

Just a guess.

I agree with this. The first sack he was absolutely waiting for something to develop downfield and really put some (more) doubt in folks minds, but Wagner got beat up too and he took a sack. He didn’t even look at underneath options on that, he was going for a kill shot.
