He’s actually from Lafayette, not WL……I saw him at a couple of parties there around 1980-82 when he was still William Bailey. Never really interacted with him but knew exactly who he was when he started to become famous with G’n’R.
Any Izzy Stradlin’ encounters?

Everyone says both so I just say yep and move on usually if asked.

Not that I remember but I know they were buddies from those days. I did get a chance to meet John Mellencamp (then Johnny Cougar) at a bar though after he played there so I guess that was my consolation prize 🤣

He said on Club Random that he use to get in a lot of bar fights. Any of that?

In an attempt to ask something more in line with your wishes, I’m curious about the state of the Purdue o line cause let’s face it, we need our defense to score to win.

His nickname was the Little Bastard but he was pretty friendly when I met him. Definitely had plenty of cockiness though! He’s not a big guy so I’d imagine his bar fighting career would not have been stellar…….

The OL is likely the best OL for Purdue in the last 7-8 years - which, quite frankly, isn't saying a whole lot.

Corey Stewart was out last week and he will be starting at LT. He is supposedly the best Purdue OL this year after transferring from Ball State with rave reviews.

I'd say there are 3 NFL linemen on the OL, maybe 4...none of which will be high picks or anything but likely decent mid-round guys. But this year we have depth...last year we were starting walk-on freshmen at times because of all the injuries. This year we are at least two-deep at every spot.

Truthfully though, I didn't think that the OL performed badly but didn't dominate Indiana State like I expected. They were great in pass protection but just above average to good in run blocking.

I thought this cut-up of our RT was quite funny. He's probably a 3-4 round pick after breaking his leg in Game 6 last year.

Thank you for that. In your opinion, are there any glaring issues Purdue needs to address on the field based on fall camp and 2 games?

Might be interesting to see if ND is visibly attempting to expose them.

Purdue has only played one game this year and it was against a very outmatched Indiana State team that saw them only throw the ball 10 times. They were certainly looking to simply run the clock the entire game and gave up before the game started. They threw the ball 37 times in their second game...so, yeah. ISU fans were not happy with how they played Purdue.

With that being said, the offense looked very good. Purdue's 3 starting WR's this year are 6'4, 6'4, 6'3 with a 6'5 and 6'4 guy who rotate in frequently. Last year they started 5'11, 6'0, 5'9. The TE room is very good and the RB's are solid. Offensively, I still have questions though.

I want to see how the offensive line can hold up against guys who can actually rush the passer. I wanted to see Hudson Card make better decisions and I want to see the offense at least pass the eye test throwing the ball. Because let's be honest...24/25 is very good but ISU didn't put up a fight at all.

There are two glaring things on the defensive side of the ball that I think Notre Dame can take advantage of. We moved a DE to ILB this year and he is not very fast in the open field. Notre Dame should probably look to get the RB's out in the flats to catch the ball and make plays. RB wheel routes actually really, really, really hurt Purdue last year and they are slower this year at the LB spot. Purdue does play 90%+ man-to-man defense so depending on matchups the RB's could feast.

The secondary is completely different this year as they brought in a few good transfers and recruited well. The #1 CB is out though so a four/five star freshman is starting in his spot who reclassed to get onto campus this year. There is also depth so they will rotate quite a bit. Last year during the back half of the year Purdue was starting a true freshman and a converted WR who had never played CB before. It was dire with all the injuries.

Purdue's run defense is also a question mark this year. They use five down linemen and none of them really impress that much despite being big. They are solid against the run one game and then terrible the next. I'd like to see better tackling from the LB's coming up to the line to make plays. Purdue can definitely be gashed in a zone run scheme but they do a great job of plugging the middle usually since they play 3 DT's.

The biggest issue - that irks everyone is the QB contain. Purdue continually gets burned when the QB runs with the ball. It's like they do not have any sort of contain set up. Schrader at Syracuse ran for over 200 yards and 4 TD's on Purdue last year. That's what scares me the most because with playing 90% man-to-man that really exposes the defense for the QB run. With Leonard being able to run the ball - I think he should get 10-15 carries and could easily, easily run for over 100 yards in the game. However, with news of Leonards injury...I'm not sure how much they will look to have him run the ball.

In summation: Purdue gets killed on passes to the RB and when the QB is able to tuck it and run whether by design or not.

Hey all!

I usually drop into opposing team territory the week before a game and answer any questions an opposing fan may have about Purdue in an unbiased manner (former media member)! Looking forward to the game and should be a game where both teams can really see where they stand this year.

Fire away if you have any questions about the Boilermakers this year or the WL area (gameday, restaurants, parking, etc.) if you’re coming to visit!
Purdue? More like Purdon't!

Sorry, I have nothing... we just lost to NIU.

I've been to Purdue games many times. Back when it was alternating seasons @ PU and the next year @ ND schedule. A group of us would come up every year ..... a PU grad would get tickets. One year it was ND @ Purdue. The next year the game was @ ND, so we substituted by going to the IU Hoosiers game. in the "off season." Sooo, when ND was in town I rooted for ND and when IU was in town I rooted for PU. Good times, no doubt! Is Slater Hill still a hot spot for tailgating? I spent several afternoons up there mixed with many PU college fans and it was a blast and no issues! Good time!

Slayter Hill is still around. Unfortunately, it is one of the most expensive places to set up now as it is now an alumni only lot with the John Purdue Club.

Problem is, you have to have a qb that can hit said receivers in the flat, or hell, anyone anywhere at all...lol

I went to Purdue a few weeks ago for the first time in almost two decades.

It was absolutely mind blowing how different the campus is now. It was a large school then, but still had that very sleepy small town vibe.

It now is buildings stacked on top of buildings. The only relic of the past still alive was Harry’s.
