Bad read? Bad throw, yes. But bad read? I don't know. He has other open, but a decent throw there is an uncontested TD. Hard to call that a bad read.

It's a bad read for him because he doesn't have the arm to reach Mitchell on the right side of the field.

He’s so damn likable, a great university representative. Sucks he isn’t as good as we had hoped.
He's a really nice kid and a great athlete but not a big time passing QB. The fact ND coaches couldn't realize that after watching film and playing him last years is sorta of unbelievable. Especially after the surgeries he gad. They're either terrible talent evaluators , spineless , or soft hearted to the point where they cant make the right decision.

I think they damaged his confidence with the "don't make a mistake mentality." I believe that mentality comes from Freeman and is at least partially responsible for our QB issues the past 3 years.

I think you’re always hoping you can coach up the guy with the high upside. Because if you do, you’re much closer to being a championship level team. I want to Dane Crist and Brandon Wimbush to work out because of their high upside. They didn’t and instead we got Rees and Book. Both played well but were never going to win you a national championship.

Agreed, but the kid had a season ending injury. Half of last season and most of the off season was spent on crutches. You can do all the film study you want but he's lacked the reps need to learn the offense and develop his throwing abilities. I didn't follow fall camp much, but I'm surprised Minchy or Angeli weren't competitive enough to win the job over Leonard. I'm starting to think Freeman and staff fell for the sunk cost fallacy.

Not sure what's worse here. The fact this was not mentioned during yesterday's press conference or that Freeman believes a banged up RL is better than any of our backups.
I get that ND invested heavily in RL, but these coaches are paid to win, which usually means playing the best players. I can't believe an immobile RL is your best option at QB, I just can't, ESPECIALLY if the defense knows he's hurt and won't run.

Maybe this is one of those deals that I feared with NIL. Coaches will no longer decide who plays based on practice time, but rather "influential boosters" based on their investments.

The fact that he tore a labrum so couldn't do QB runs actually makes sense on why the game plan changed dramatically after the first drive, but what doesn't make sense is why they didn't pull him for Angeli if he was hurt.

Who do you think the influential booster who loves riley Leonard is? Can some of our older posters think of the richest/most successful guys in their class?

I have no idea, but the speculation is he cost $1-2 million to get here. I'm sure whomever spent that money doesn't want to see it on the bench.

That said, you wouldn't think they'd want to see ND lose either.

You would think whoever spent that kind of money really wants ND to win. I think they would be cool benching RL if it means we win more games

I find our private equity alumni to be pretty rational

Now it’s “unclear” whether he will play
