There is smaller, and then there is too small. Unfortunately, Wagner seems to be approaching the latter. 290 seems way, way too small for a CFP level football team.

Fans may think differently about this if Baker gets torched regularly off the edge. Wagner is attempting to put on weight. Prister has implied this will be a camp battle. Still only June.

I think fisher, baker and carmondy all played LT before him
The point was ND started a True Freshman at Left Tackle the exact season that it was said Alt was 3rd string because ND didn’t trust freshmen Tackles.

Tbf don't think the schedule Alt and Totino-Grace were playing in Minny was any better than CM in Mass.

It’s why recruiting hype matters… a 5 star is going to get more opportunities all things equal
I think Blake dominating Foskey in spring ball had way more to do with his getting his opportunity in the fall, than his rating. Also, let's not pretend that Alt was ready when he got here, because he wasn't. Blake was clearly the better OT before he got hurt.

Can confirm that their competition was worse.
Weight doesn’t matter as much as if they can use their hands, move their feet & push opponents.
Baker outweighs Wagoner by a lot.
But if you talk to anyone at ND, they will tell you Wagoner moves people better than Baker.

So in 6 weeks alt went from fourth best to the best, with in season practices that have almost no development and limited weight lifting?

That's a pretty disingenuous framing of the situation. I also don't think you are accurately portraying what Joe Alt was (6'8 305) and what the coaches expectations where for him when ND broke fall camp his freshman year.
Right, he'd pull 46 on over 76. That didn't happen right away, though and I think was a product of Baker and Carmody's ability to hold up.

Robert Hainsey started at RT for both the '18 and '20 playoff squads and at that time, he was only around 290.

Blake started at Tackle because there was a black hole there and he came early and so he got lots of spring reps.
Alt may not have been “ready” but the fact that he was behind Baker and Carmody shows you how comfortable coaches are playing fall freshman at OL. Alt isn’t some pretty good OT, he was a top 5 draft pick. It was immediately evident that Baker was not as good.

Was Alt really a TE though as freshman? I’m pretty sure he was listed around 295-300Ibs. He played as a jumbo TE attached to the OT, similar to what Stanford did back in the day under Harbaugh.

He got his first game action playing TE. That isn't anywhere remotely the same as saying he started out as a TE at ND.

How long after showing up did he switch to OL? He was in the two deep as of Sep 8th so he had to have been working as OL for a majority of camp.
My only assumption based off of comments from Rees was that they didn't expect Alt to come in with a lot of strength. Rees went on to say they were mistaken. So I guess I can buy that they started him out at TE until they figured out he had the strength to compete at OL.
I can buy that he might have spent a couple of weeks in camp working primarily with the TE's. When the season started he was an OL that played a little TE.

Alt was probably working out with the TEs because they didn’t have plans to play him at OT but thought he could be part of a jumbo package.
He was listed as the number 2 RT in week 2. He was played as a blocking TE after Carmody and Baker showed deficiencies at LT. Then took the job against Cincinnati.
We don't have to guess, it's documented.

I’m thinking this is more of Zeke Correll than Hainsey. Hainsey at least had some length. Zeke was 295 on his best days, 6’3” with smaller arms
