I think people are overrating Elko just a smidge.
I’m with you on this. I’m not sure what indicators are there to show he’s ready to be HC of an SEC team. Duke beat a down Clemson, the best Lafayette, Northwestern, and UCONN. Lost to ND. Beat NC State then lost to FSU by 18 and got shut out by Louisville. Beat Wake by a FG then proceeded to lose to UNC and UVA before ending the season winning against Pitt.

A fine enough season but not sure that means he’s ready to run an SEC program. And just because he was DC there means nothing. And the fact he wasn’t their top choice is a little concerning.

Then again, he doesn’t do well and is quickly fired, he can find himself back in the ACC a richer man.

Shrugs.

I like Elko a lot but acting like the season opener is now a guaranteed loss is incredibly lame.
It’s not guaranteed, but what is a worse scenario than:

1) New QB
2) New OL
3) OC???
4) Season Opener
5) 105,000 Rowdy fans
6) Heat
7) Legit Defense
8) Elko already stifled ND with average players

I don’t like the situation.
I still think A&M is an 8-4 team, but the opener could be a bad matchup for ND.

It's a really dumb opening game for us. Something Notre Dame would do.

If I'm Duke I'm calling Matt Campbell right now. He's available for a lot less than he would have been 3-4 years ago when he was the hottest thing happening. If I'm Matt Campbell, I'd like the opportunity to feast in the ACC.

A&M got a really solid defense. Don’t know how much Elko can do on the offensive side though. He needs a solid OC with the ability to develop players. The Aggies may be the worst team in the country at pissing away five star WR talent. The right OC, with a good QB, could get the Aggies on track.

This game should have been at Jerry World. Bama, etc. doesn’t agree to a game like that unless it’s a neutral site.

I don't get the elko hype he's a good d coordinator and when Leonard wasn't hurt he was the entire offense thus getting 1st round chatter at one point. If you ask me Leonard regressed this year and they were awful with a back up quarterback in a not so great acc. Freeman last year with drew pyne goes 9-4 and this year they definitely underachieved but you are acting like elko is the next saban

Isn’t your whole schitck is that ND doesn’t want to be like Bama? So when they do something that Bama does, you just shit on them anyways? Take a note from Dingle and at least stick to your talking points.

Because you're not worth the effort. But since you insisted - it has been reported that ND would have ultimately paid the Ludwig buyout, but in dragging their feet 1st, Ludwig got cold feet. I get assistants shouldn't require that kind of buyout, but:

1.) Rees leaving as late in the coaching carousel cycle as he did (AND ND NOT GETTING A FUCKING BUYOUT IN RETURN) really put ND behind the 8-ball wrt what was available.

2.) ND already got Freeman at a discount.
Surely they could afford out some of that savings towards a seasoned OC to help balance the staff and allow Freeman one less thing to worry about, esp with him being a defensive coach.

Unique circumstances. Not saying the should circle back on Ludwig NOW, given time is no longer working against ND. But I am saying that they should have done it at that time last season. We're looking at 10-2 and a "NY6" bowl at WORST. ROI on that alone justifies the move.

Again, most of this is a narrative that you’ve spun picking and choosing what you want to believe from the various stuff you’ve read on the subject.

1. It’s not that they shouldn’t, this isn’t an opinion. It’s a statement of fact, that virtually none do. It’s literally unmatched in his own conference with substantially better offenses. The two best HC hires being made right now have buyouts of 5M and 3M. We’re talking an OC for 2.8M.

2. Per reports from actual reporters on the topic, Freeman had plenty of time to conduct a national search that included over 30+ names. Extremely high profile names. Most of which he turned down for various reasons.

3. What is Freeman’s contract?

His whole schtick is just shit on the program no matter what they do and come on here posting like a little fanboy for other programs, so this was actually right on brand. If we werent scheduling these types of games he would be calling them pussies.

I loved it until Elko went there.

I liked having the entire off-season to prepare for a game that ND is the better team.

Then have 3 easy games until the next difficult game.

I thought ND would win & be on the way to the CFP with the schedule.

But Elko will make life miserable for ND.

Notre Dame is not like Alabama. I want them to be like Alabama. They should be like Alabama. Greatness.

Alabama is a locomotive. We are the little engine that could in big dog college football.

If Notre Dame wants to embrace their heritage and be great like Alabama then that's great. But I suspect they don't, so they shouldn't schedule like it.

A bunch of scared little girls on this site. Go Irish!!! Bring on all takers. Nd could win big or could lose big no one has any clue until foot meets leather and the game is played on a field of grass( or artificial turf).

Scared little girls?
For discussing football on a football site?
Nobody is scared of A&M. People are just discussing how the game got tougher with them upgrading their staff…aka, common sense.
And why would a fan be scared? They aren’t playing. Nothing to be scared of.

That's not true. I post plenty of positive things about ND. Just today I was defending Parker and Gino.

I like easy schedules. If you are going to go to a place like A&M, you don't do it the first game of the year. It's just stupid. Elko is going to have an entire offseason now to shut down our offense.

No. It was a shit at Freeman and/or his supporters.

Nothing against you, Freeman, or “his supporters”. That felt even weirder to type that it did to read, lol. We’re not at war.

Check the record. I didn’t like the hire but I thought they’d win 11 games this season even with Parker.

We’re in the “challenge everything” era. But we’re not challenging our HC to find an OC that doesn’t require an obscene buyout. Seems odd.

I share some of your frustrations. I didn't initially, but I'm starting to question him more so as time goes on. That said, you already made up your mind before he coached his first game. So pardon me for thinking your opinions are biased.

Being scared of even scheduling A&M is delusional. There’s no justification for being scared of scheduling them. A serious adult would not be afraid of them.

This doesn’t even get to the logistics of “omg ND is so stupid to schedule it week 1”. When else are they supposed to play? In the middle of conference play? Go to their stadium with their new coach and their purchased players and embarrass them. Fuck em, remind them why they’ve been dog dick for so long.

There’s no logical stance behind being scared of A&M.

Discuss all you want. I observed that some of you are acting like scared little girls because big bad Elko was hired by Texas AM who hasn’t won shit in since when. What has Elko done but finished 2 games over .500 2 years in a row in arguably the weakest power 5 conference. The ACC has been a joke besides Florida St. the past 2 years. It’s not like he was taking on teams with top ten talent with the acceptation of Clemson who has squandered their talent the past 2 years. Sorry I’m not scared of Elko making the Irish’s life miserable. Again they could win or they could lose but the Irish should have no fear going into the game of Elko or Texas AM. Last time I checked A&M will have a new Head Coach, a new DC, and a new OC heading up a team that isn’t much of a team but hired mercenaries that have utterly failed for the past 2 years.

Ok, that's fair enough. I hope you're right. I just want to win. At least 10 games next year. It's important for the trajectory of the program.

If we win, I'll be the first to come here and talk about being a worry wart.

Elko is likely the best possible hire. Maybe they hold out for Bill Belich

i differ. The program’s resources make it worthy of consideration as a program that could become elite. Based on upside potential, it is elite.

But getting a solid HC like Elko is the right move. Match the sizzle with real steak.
Elko is a good hire, but NDOhio is right. They’ve had the facilities and money for a long time, yet they are who they’ve been forever.
