And he's doing it for Venezuelans. If they can become citizens it's a win for the R's bc they vote like Cubans.

The whole asylum system needs to be reworked. More/ faster lawyers or a non legal screen, ability to work while application is pending.

The issue is you have a bunch of people who are legally here in legal limbo and unable to work... so they're a financial drain. If they could work everyone would be doing better. More workers for the locals, generating tax revenue, etc. Etc.
I don't care if they vote D or R. Just come through legally and wait until your approved before entering or take any foreign aid money we may be giving to Venezuela and use it to take care of them until they're processed.

I don't think people realize how much Venezuela has collapsed. They've lost something like 25% of their population since 2016. We've always had a Cuba policy that if you could get to American shores without being caught you were scott free.

The real issue is a lot of Latin America has destabilized and our economy has a labor shortage. You have a huge push pull. Once the asylum system got overwhelmed and the time to have your case adjudicated shot up, it made more and more sense to come flooding the system more.

The other crazy thing is asylum judges vary wildly in who they approve. If I recall there's one with about. 0% approval rate and one close to 100%.

The only thing that could make it worse is if we go War On Terror against Mexican drug cartels without the government's backing. If Mexico destabilized the border issue is going to get 100 times worse.

The whole cuba thing was a cold war policy. Any Soviets, East Germans, etc. were allowed to defect over to the west.

I'll never understand how the US allowed Cuba to go communist. Venezuela should have been taken care of long ago. I'm afraid it's about as lost as Cuba now.

We can be such fucking scumbags.

“They’re unvetted, how do you know they’re not pedophiles?” Debbie Lobaito, 69, told VICE News at the protest on Thursday. “We’ve been noticing some of the women have been getting picked up here and dropped off later in the evening, so we’re saying it could be prostitution. You know, they have to pay the cartels back for getting them in.”

“These people, they’re gonna turn on us,” said Steve, 39, wearing a red shell suit and yellow-tinted glasses. “Because that’s their MO. That’s what they do. They’re gonna turn on us and they’re gonna take over.”

This is the shit that happens when you mislabel people as criminals.

Good thing we’ve done our best to run their economy into the ground vis a vis sanctions and tried to overthrow the government to boot.

The underlying conditions created in part by our short sighted foreign policy are one of the reasons many of the Venezuelans showing up at the border have a legit asylum claim. Same goes for El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua.

Anyhow, very insightful post.

As far as Mexico is concerned if people really wanted to tackle the cartels they would go after the white collar criminals and institutions who wash their money. Sadly, I have a feeling that will never happen.

Sending in the Navy Seals would be a really bad idea for the reasons you mentioned as well as many others.

“Taken care of”…man that is stupid.

It’s crazy to me that people get hung up on the whole “communism” thing when we can be “allies” with the country that bankrolled Al Qaeda and Isis and executed a US citizen in their embassy.

You haven't heard him try to say black culture is toxic because they spend money on sound systems and their music has aggressive lyrics. This is pretty neutral for him.

He must really hate European Culture considering what bands like Gorgoroth and Burzum are all about. Lol.

I forget who said it but there was a great line about how many years ago ancestors followed the very strong and real immigration laws that were bigly enforced. I wanted to know specifically which laws were adhered to in the 1800's, but alas there was no answer.

(Did an ancestry thing that relatives came through NYC in the 1800s, what was great was that there was like 4 different ways of spelling our last name apparently. But yes those were the golden years of immigration laws *distinct wankoff motion*)

I'm fine with protesting, but the lights and music were uncalled for. Seems there might be noise ordinance being violated?

The structural issue to passing a real immigration reform law is the makeup/rules around congress as well as political incentives. To get any piece of legislation voted on you realistically need at least half your conference to support the law. That's why despite having the votes, House R's never really tried to get comprehensive immigration reform through under Obama.

From an incentive perspective on the R side it's become a top 3 issue, and any compromise (even just giving dreamers a pathway to citizenship) spell weakness and a primary.

Under Trump dems were negatively polarized to anything Trump was doing, and it was especially easy to be against Trump's rhetoric/actions/cruelty.

Now that Biden is struggling with the issue I think the immigration maximalist impulse on the D side has receded. If R's were interested in dealing they could probably get most D's on board with something more restrictive than the deal from the Obama years.

We're too close to an election, though. Disorder at the border is a good campaign issue for Trump/Republicans and as we can see in the house it's not a great time to get any deal through. But I think if Biden or a Haley type gets elected you'll probably get some legislation through congress.

I just hope it doesn't blow up the skilled immigration pipeline that's given us Silicon Valley and our innovation/science advantage over the rest of the world.

Europe certainly has its issues. Has black metal ever been anything more than a shock niche genre of music? I mean, we have that here in the US.

As far as urban black culture in the U.S., I wish the worst aspect about it was the "life ain't nothing but bitches, hoes, money, smokin' anyone who dares look at me' message from its music.

The whole country wishes that, including many blacks. But it goes far deeper than that in our inner cities. Young blacks aren't shooting each other over sneakers, shunning achievement as acting white and celebrating the baby mama/daddy lifestyle from music alone.

What was it with Reagan? 11%?

Reagan is when it got low for good. 14% in his 1st term, 9% in 1984. It was 17% in 1976 and higher than 20% for I think everyone but Goldwater before that.

If you go back far enough Black people were the only demographic that voted Hoover over Roosevelt.

Sanctuary cities should be accepting people with open arms. It’s Democrat policy letting people in so democrats should bear the consequences.

Also- as we see borders of Israel get crossed and the threat to American synagogues elevated- Biden opened up our border to everyone, including terrorists.

This source adds some context. There are still more watchlist folks crossing the northern border than the southern. They have more hits at the southern border in 2018 and 2019 than 2023. We had an abnormal lul during the pandemic that brought the numbers down.

Most crossing the southern border are connected to Latin American groups, not the middle east.

But we don't know how many are tied to Hamas or Iranian-funded terror groups. That's the point. We're sitting wide open and making no effort to stop it.

The issue on most eastern hemisphere terror groups is that the southern border isn't easier than other modes of entry. Flying in or entering legally and overstating visas has always been their preferred way of entering.

NYC now has a big red-light district, thanks to Biden's immigration policies.
