I don't think people realize how much Venezuela has collapsed. They've lost something like 25% of their population since 2016. We've always had a Cuba policy that if you could get to American shores without being caught you were scott free.
The real issue is a lot of Latin America has destabilized and our economy has a labor shortage. You have a huge push pull. Once the asylum system got overwhelmed and the time to have your case adjudicated shot up, it made more and more sense to come flooding the system more.
The other crazy thing is asylum judges vary wildly in who they approve. If I recall there's one with about. 0% approval rate and one close to 100%.
The only thing that could make it worse is if we go War On Terror against Mexican drug cartels without the government's backing. If Mexico destabilized the border issue is going to get 100 times worse.
Good thing we’ve done our best to run their economy into the ground vis a vis sanctions and tried to overthrow the government to boot.
The underlying conditions created in part by our short sighted foreign policy are one of the reasons many of the Venezuelans showing up at the border have a legit asylum claim. Same goes for El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua.
Anyhow, very insightful post.
As far as Mexico is concerned if people really wanted to tackle the cartels they would go after the white collar criminals and institutions who wash their money. Sadly, I have a feeling that will never happen.
Sending in the Navy Seals would be a really bad idea for the reasons you mentioned as well as many others.
