Fargo shooting update: Syrian national. US citizen. No ties to local immigrant community. Sounds like the shooter had been planning something off and on for months. Had been searching for large events in the area and beyond. 1800 rounds of ammunition. Had three rifles with him. Had some homemade bombs using tannerite(sp?). Belief seems to be he was going to either A) the downtown street fair or B) the county fairgrounds which had the fair going on, and stopped to try to ambush a few officers on the way there to divert a police response to the scene.

On paper I’ll agree that punishment (in America) does not deter crime. The stats will be on your side.

I was in the crime business for awhile. 2 hots and a cot and the never ending battle with lawsuits to get better prison conditions has made a lot of prisons luxury apartments compared to what some of the these people would call normal living conditions. I was an in home social worker too… most jails and prisons aren’t rikers, they are closer to the Marriott. Drugs a plenty, cell phones found daily, jailhouse hooch is pretty easy to make. Oysters in some places, not to mention the ghetto delicacy of never ending top ramen. Compare that to a NYC or Chicago apartment in the ghetto and I would take prison any day, not even close.

Someone posted incarceration numbers compared to China. We incarcerate more as a percentage but have you seen a Chinese prison? But then it’s also estimated Chinas number could be grossly understated. Not to mention the re education camps. China carried out 12,000 executions per year and t Roy have decreased to 2,400 according to most sites…. but then again they aren’t known for honesty with stats. China on paper is a much safer place to live on paper, they must have a great judicial system. Crazy.

Nothing about our current system is adequately deterring crime. We have to lock more up and make it worse to get these people to face consequences and get bad people off the streets.

How in the hell does stuff like this keep happening? He needs to find himself a Perry Mason or a Harvey Specter quality lawyer and sue the crap out of them.

I read the Twitter thread. This may be the best comment of all.

So when a 30 year old violent felon that spent more than half their life behind bars for violent crimes gets killed in a shootout while fleeing and shooting at police, his family gets a multi million dollar settlement. But these victims get nothing!?

Everything around policing in this country is fucked. You basically have either:
1. Rights of normal Americans being trampled by things like Civil Asset Forfeiture or destruction of property without compensation.
2. No policing of property crime and “petty” crime leading to general lawlessness.

Check this out for the other side of the pendulum:

I'm sure he'd win. Then the citizens get to pay the settlement. Gee I wonder why this shit keeps happening? Even when they're "held responsible" they face no real punishment.

All of that lost revenue that could go towards sheltering the homeless or provide free rudimentary medical care for the less fortunate or feed those struggling to put food on the table.

How much revenue is lost? Do you even know that?

I doubt you know anything about this, but you are going to defend the framing of a city as lawless because they don't enforce overdue registration? Lol.

The plates are indicative of how the area is policed. I found it intriguing when I was there. Trying to get an SF conference booked so I can see how big of a shithole it really is.

I’m not framing the city as lawless. Simply pointing out that there’s lost revenue that could be put towards worthy causes. How much is lost? You’re right, I have no idea, but if it helps just a few isn’t it worth it?
