Just a few thoughts for discussion:

Does bringing in a top tier QB (I mean #1-10) in 25 get Carr thinking? We certainly don’t want to lose him,

On the other hand does having Carr hurt our chances of landing a top QB in 25?

Carr was committing to ND when Dante Moore was a silent ahead of him. Carr doesn’t care.
In reality, if ND got Knight, there is zero chance Minchey, Carr & Knight all are at ND more than an off-season together. That’s just how it is today.

Has Oregon ever recruited at an elite level?
Define elite. Last ten years per 247 composite:

2023 - 9th
2022 - 13th
2021 - 6th
2020 - 12th
2019 - 7th
2018 - 13th
2017 - 19th
2016 - 27th
2015 - 16th
2014 - 21st

I wouldn't say elite, but great the last few years. I would also say on field results the past few years would be underwhelming.

It seems like they are in the same boat ND is. Great recruiting, but not enough elite recruiting to get to the next level.

On the list of interesting decisions. Not necessarily bad but very interesting.

ISD had a piece about Deuce and basically the staff is all in on him for '25 QB. They won't recruit another one until he decides and if he goes elsewhere, then they'll focus on '25 QB season film.

Definitely merits to that decision but also risks. We'll have to see how it plays out.

We continue to live on past mistakes.

My thinking exactly. Haven't we seen this strategy play out before?

I used to think being the QB at Notre Dame was a nationally aspirational position. Why focus on one and keep recruiting the Top 5 on the Board - who ever commits first.

On one hand, you have a lot of time to recruit others.

On the other, QB’s decide early so building that relationship means recruiting them even earlier.

Land Deuce and none of it matters.

One of the challenges I think the staff (as well as staffs around the country) are trying to reconcile with in the ‘24 cycle and going forward is the ability to easily fill holes w starting caliber players through the portal v taking low ceiling / high floor recruits. A school like ND is always going to be able to get a mediocre starting caliber QB in the portal if needed. Might as well swing for the fences through recruiting high upside guys.

Probably the reason that defensive recruiting has been so weird in ‘24. Freeman asking “is this kid a potential difference maker, or just a replaceable body we can get in the portal.” Unfortunately, we’ve struck out a bunch on the elite, game changing talent.

ND’s QB recruiting has been pretty good.
If you look at their actual recruiting ranks. ND usually identified a QB and went after them hard.

Zaire 164
Kizer 162 (NFL)
Wimbush 43
Book (NFL)
Jurkovec 115 (5 Star when committed)
McNamara 282 flipped (top 100 when committed)
Pyne 225 (top 50 when committed)
Buchner 71 (5 Star when committed)
Angeli ???
Minchey 167 (got real late after 5 Star Moore screwed ND)
Carr 5 Star when committed

ND’s strategy after going after one QB only got them who we all thought were good QBs at the time.

I think this is a very good point but also a dangerous one.

I think this last portal cycle proved ND can and should be a player in future portal cycles.

However, once it’s gotten to needing players from the portal for the upcoming season, that is last opportunity to add talent to the roster as signing days has already came and passed. If you miss then the hole just exists. No chances to add players once the portal closes.

Therefore, I wouldn’t like to count on the portal only use it to enhance where possible.

And only Book has really produced anything.

Have to think ND is also leaning into the “your our #1 guy” sell bc Tennessee is maybe the leader for 5 star, Tennessee native, George McIntyre. Guarantee they don’t stop recruiting him even if they get deuce.

The portal fix options are gonna decrease significantly as extra covid year fizzles out.

NOT SAYING THIS AS TO KNIGHT

but I think we should all get used to the idea that we will make a lot of people (5 star) shortlist because we are a big name and distinctly different for the sole purpose of driving up pay for play and NIL money from other schools

Considering that he's supposedly making a decision before his junior year, totally fine with it.

I like this a lot assuming Bachmeier is who they pivot to

I think this just means ND is either bad at evaluating or really bad at developing… maybe both.

Swing big in '25, '24 is set with a gem. Would getting a mid 4 star do a lot? They will be sitting behind Carr. At least Knight would push and give some competition.

and Knight comes in much more raw than a Carr. He will need a year or two to marinate
