I honestly don’t know how people can follow college football closely and not think recruiting rankings matter. You need elite talent to win big and 5* players hit at a higher rate than any other group. Pretty simple. Go look back at ND’s 5 stars the last 20 years and it will be no different.

They mean class rankings don't matter, because they don't factor in the number of players in each class and only rank the teams by their overall total. If you look at the average ranking of the players Kelly was landing vs the average ranking Freeman has recruited Marcus has clearly upped our game.

Freeman isn't offering a guy off of "a few splash plays".

Your example of Clarence Lewis was also pretty bad, considering Lewis wasn't a plus athlete at corner. This guys is very clearly a plus athlete at LB.

He plays a lot of safety in high school and doesn’t make a lot of tackles

My issue is our recruiting has clearly fallen off significantly since we started playing games with freeman as coach. He needs to win big this year so we can start landing and then keeping top talent like we did before September 2022

You can also argue that average player ranking is flawed. Looking at last year’s class vs a team like Oklahoma. They finished at #5, we finished #12 yet our average player ranking was higher. I’d still rather have a class like Oklahoma got. They had:
- three 5* players
- seven top 100 players
We had zero 5* and two top 100 players.

Now, our class may ultimately be way better but as a general rule I’d take the higher end talent over higher ranked guys in the middle or back end of the class. It’s all about difference makers in college football. Can they come from 3 and 4* guys? Absolutely, but at a less frequent rate, for sure.

I think we all should be able to agree Freeman especially and this staff put a ton more attention and effort with a more modern approach to recruiting. With that said, our coaching staff doesn't have too many coaches that can show the NFL talent they've developed like other top staffs/teams.

Marshall and Stanford really hurt last year, but on the flip side, getting Hartman and as much as we have coming back, I think this team could explode and be very good. If this years team isn't good i'm not sure (other than major hartman injury) how we could expect freeman to be the right coach. 2023 is set up better from a talent/experience perspective than 24 is. Need to have a great year! This years schedule looks tough and could be but ohio state and clemson have big question marks at QB, the most important position. I also can't imagine caleb williams plays like he did last year risking injury with the number one pick looming.

ND has offered him already.
His dad played at Nebraska though, so will be a tough pull.
But I think it’s a ND/NU battle.

He wasn’t cut, he just wasn’t selected for Varsity.
And it was his Sophomore year.
He says “cut” as a fuel for motivation, but in reality he was on the team, just the JV team.

A Nebraska 3 star is the equivalent to a Georgia 2 star which is the equivalent to an Indiana 4 star.

Maybe we should wait and see if additional offers materialize from more P-5 teams before we pass judgement on this kid. Right now his “rating” may appear underwhelming but that may not be because he’s an underwhelming player. I don’t think the staff is settling by making him an offer, they most likely see something in his ability that us keyboard experts might not recognize.

Math isnt hard. 30ish 5 stars a year…300ish 3 stars a year. Of course 3 stars are going to hit. Percentages heavily favor 5 stars

1st to 12th was fun to watch from august - December last year. Our staff evaluated prospects and we’re landing our options wayyy down the list. So if you trust the staffs evaluation then we’re landing a bunch of players not even close to who they really wanted for this cycle.
