Holy crap we actually finished the 23 class ranked #12...i had no idea the fall was that bad. Little skeptical of all the blame being put on NIL. Every single fan base is using that as an excuse. For us, it particularly plays into our particularly acute arrogance that "ND does things differently (better)"

As Philly correctly posted, ND took a smaller class.

And let's be real, NIL wasn't the only factor, but it was a major factor. Does ND lose Keeley, Bowen and Moore if NIL isn't a differentiating factor? You'd be hard to argue that they would.

It didn't help that Edwards had a major relationship with Deion and he happened to make the jump to Colorado right before NSD.

Moore, yes. Keeley, maybe but also we have a long history of losing to Bama on elite recruits. Bowen flirted with Oregon (NIL) but in the end signed with Oklahoma where his best friend and his girlfriend were going. No particular evidence that one was NIL.
So on balance I dunno. It's an issue sometimes (Keeley) but also sometimes a convenient excuse. We should adapt.

Picky picky. Ok, not a miracle but find me one other program in recent times that had such a turnaround. And, to my point, he brought his QB with him because he was, and is, an excellent and proven coach.
4-8 to NY6 is a fine turnaround, no doubt. But it's not unprecedented. We nearly did it in 2017, for instance. And Riley brought his QB with him because he is an excellent and proven developer of quarterbacks. Which is different than being an excellent college football coach.

I think Keeley was primarily NIL. Alabama offered him months prior to him even decommitting. Suddenly, the mutterings about the NIL cash and the "uncle" emerge and then Keeley is all of a sudden blocking fellow '23 classmates on social media.

I think that plot was lost because of all the time between him de-committing to ND and committing to Alabama, but it rarely seemed in doubt.

I'd say Bowen was primarily the relationships, though that seems to have bitten him in the ass, because apparently his GF de-committed from OU soccer.

Oh I'd agree NIL was A factor for Keeley - and maybe without it he's Irish - but he wasn't shopping himself around the way many others at his level were. And when Alabama turns on the charm it's hard to say no. He made the same decision a lot of people would have before NIL, is all.

Didn't know that about Bowen and his GF. Poor kid. Did she just bail on playing soccer or on OU entirely?

When everyone talks recruiting, they bash on Kelly.
And he mentioned average recruit ranks & team rankings.
My counter is that it’s not team recruiting rankings or average Star rating, it’s getting the rights kids that fit what you are doing, coaching them up & winning.

“Recruiting” is not just finding the highest ranked players, it’s finding the right players that help you win.

So my post was directly related to his post.
That’s what Herb Brooks did with the 80 Olympic Team. USA USA.

You are being picky. Freeman is not Reilly - especially in terms of perceived reputation in the National Media. His turn around at USC was very much lauded. Akin to Kelly’s turnaround at LSU.

We took a smaller class than the vast majority of teams which skewed our team ranking. 👏 Look 👏 at 👏 average 👏 ranking
this is fun and all but doesnt mean those "extra" kids didnt enroll and wont be playing football. They matter.

Especially when half the class transfers out over the next three years, as seems to be the current fashion. I used to agree with quality over quantity but now I'm not so sure.

Poor kid, why? If his decisions in life is based on following pu**y, then he's gonna have rude awakening at some n the juncture!

I think Keeley wasn't shopping himself.

I think people within his inner circle were though.

Keeley’s mom sent out a very public tweet about 1M being the number they wouldn’t pass up. They were looking for money.
Good for her. She knew her child’s value and made sure he capitalized on it. They got 1 million dollars and he’s playing for the best program/coach in the country.

I wonder what comes with that theoretical $1 million. For a kid with his potential, that’s not much take home cash after taxes and everything and I wonder if the money men expect some accommodations down the road, should he hit.

I seriously doubt a DE gets $1MM..... but perhaps that explains Bamas issue. They spent it on DE and not QBs.......

Certainly an opinion to have.

The tug my collar funny thing is Alabama could miss over and over and over at QB and they’d still come out smelling like roses - or at least a lot better than Notre Dame would if they couldn’t at least get competent QB play.

An uncle who was sincerely interested in helping Keeley navigate the recruiting process materialized out of thin air as soon as she hit send on that Tweet.
Keeley already had Uncles on the scene even his Junior year when they stopped Sampson from speaking to him because they were all invested in Keeley choosing Florida

Yea unlike Moore, I actually think Keeley was very strong on ND. I think Dante was always liking ND but just didn't want to go to Michigan and was open to alternatives to ND. For me, with the big cheer the staff did for Moore at the GUG and he didn't commit told me he wasn't there - not just his dad and handlers. JMHO.
