The stream of consciousness is great in the Spring Practice thread... but I want to read all of your collective gushing over Hartman, musings over Buchner, and thoughts/concerns in one place.

My own observations, from an admittedly distracted viewing of the game:

1. Holy shit guys. Hartman is going to be good. Having a guy that knows how/when to hit the deep shot, and when to take the 5-yard layup and let his guys do the work that they've been recruited to do, is going to be so much fun. Maybe it was just because the teams were spread thin, and maybe the defense he was throwing against was not the best collection of DB's (coverage) or DL (pressure), but I got off the couch absolutely GIDDY that Hartman decided on ND for a season. Dude is going to make ALL of the pass-catchers look good. He made Davis Sherwood look like the next in line at TE on a couple of plays! And he only had 1/5th of the most dangerous parts of the pass-catching group at his disposal!

2. Lorenzo Styles: crazy how fast the outlook at a position can change. Had he left this time last year, we might have had to ban 5+ regular members of IE for how bad the discourse would have gotten. Fast-forward a year: Styles has below-average hands and a confidence problem, is more stiff as an athlete than he looked as a freshman, and the WR group has seen the emergence of several weapons that can line up and attack the seam the same way Styles projected, but probably to an even more effective degree. Between JT moving around, Tyree being a legit weapon as a motion/slot tweener, this historical use of 12/22 personnel that takes a 3rd WR off the field, and the emergence of Greathouse as a space-eating zone-destroyer... WR might be okay. Even if it's not, the loss of Styles has zero impact on the ceiling of the position, regardless, because several members of the group can do the same things that he was supposed to bring to the table.

3. Payne looks like a Logan Diggs clone, who is a unique version of Kyren Williams. Not mad about it.

4. Staes is going to be a monster. If Raridon can get healthy, and/or if Evans can build into more than a blocking/gadget guy, the TE position will be fine. It won't be as every-down reliable as it was with Mayer, obviously, but any two guys emerging as a sure 1/2 combo will make the offense a pick-your-poison thing with Hartman at the helm, especially with Sherwood as a willing and capable lead blocker that can obviously ALSO catch the ball in traffic and against tight coverage. When your 3rd TE/H-back is a threat to catch a throwback on play-action and beat your worst LB in coverage, you're gonna be okay.

5. I honestly am not familiar enough with the younger DL to have made individual assessments, but Onye flashed a couple of times (even if against backup/walk-on OL), Ford made his presence felt, and there didn't appear to be any glaring weaknesses overall. Very curious to see if Burnham or Junior can become a 3rd/4th viable edge rusher on obvious third-down situations to join and/or spell Botehlo and JJB. Will be looking much closer at the DL during games 3 and 4, and the judgement will truly begin with game 5.

6. Safety concerns me, if only because they will be tasked with simply "don't fuck it up" based on the CB group in front of them. Their responsibilities should be relatively clear and simple as long as Hart and BenMo stay healthy, Mickey continues to develop, and Lewis doesn't totally fall off a cliff when called upon. That means opposing offenses are going to load up to test the deep thirds. Watts/Brown/Henderson/Harper/Minich better be ready to read the ball in the air and make quick decisions every week at key times, even on non-standard passing downs.

7. No idea what to think at LB until we hear more about how the position is being rotated in summer/fall camp. But it IS good that the young guys all had their moments. The question is if Golden and Freeman will allow them to push the established trio, or if they will be relegated to spot duty. I think automatically granting the veterans their spots would be a mistake... but I also am not as down on the group as a whole (even Marist!) as a lot of the board is, so it will be interesting to track moving forward.

8. Bummed out that the Blue squad wasn't capable of operating a standard passing offense for the most part... some due to Buchner, but a lot more due to protection issues. Was really looking forward to seeing Tobias/Tyree/Flores/James each get some high-percentage receptions to work after the catch, and maybe to see one of two of them try to turn on the burners getting deep. Very excited to see Hartman with the ENTIRE group at his disposal in Ireland.

9. BK is gone, and Gino had zero overlap with his time at UC... but the way Angeli moves in the pocket, finds creases to step up into, and the way he chews up ground with big strides with rolling out, kind of reminds me of Tony Pike at UC back in 2008/2009. Not saying Angeli will be any where close to that good a QB, but physically they look the same with the way they move around in the backfield. Angeli DID make a few good throws on the move, though.

It’s a Spring Game and truthfully you shouldn’t give too much attention to both the good and bad.

That said, a couple of takeaways:

— Hartman looked very good, crisp and polished. To no surprise, Hartman played like one who had 48 games under his belt. Hartman is the starter and always was going to be the starter. There was never a quarterback battle.

— Alternatively, Buchner played like someone battling injuries with only a few starts under his belt. He looked rushed and flustered. His line didn’t really help him, but he just looks uncomfortable and quick to run after his primary target is locked down. You don’t see Buchner going through the progressions like Hartman does.

— The young wide receiver and linebacker talent is something to be very excited over. I’ve seen Jaiden play in high school, and he’s the real deal. Notre Dame needs to do something to work him in reps. Special teams, when they’re up big on TSU, Central Michigan, maybe Duke or Louisville … doesn’t matter. You’ve got to get elite athletes on the field. Same with Ziegler.

— Not naming names, you can likely figure them out, but a couple of the upper class men linebackers are a liability — especially against Ohio State, USC, Clemson, Pitt and NC State athletes. They don’t play well in space.

— Cornerbacks look solid. They need to hit the portal and nab a seasoned Safety.

— The offensive line will be a top 5 unit this year.

— You obviously couldn’t really tell from the Spring Game, but the Estime + Diggs combo is arguably a top 5 unit this year.

— It should be a fun year now that Notre Dame has a real quarterback, an elite offensive line, a couple of strong backs and talent at WR. Instead of stacking the box, opponents’ defenses will now be forced to defend the entire field. Still some questions, but Notre Dame arguably has the ability to simply put up points and outscore teams now (should the defense have an “off-day”). No more playing in a box / slugfest.

— All in all, you’ve got to be pleased with this Spring. Go grab a few guys in the portal now to tidy up, and let’s look forward to the fall.

one thing with buchner that I haven't seen discussed. He makes so many wrong reads post snap that he should have identified pre snap. I think he really struggled to make changes to protections and post/pre snap reads. I remember re watching the ohio state game and in the second half we would have lenzy 1-1 on an island, clear as day pre snap, and he would go right into double coverage to the other side. We also saw the oline get better almost immediately once pyne took over. I also don't think its coincidence the line for hartman looked good and the line for buchner looked bad. First play of the game for buchner was a strip sack where no one even attempted to get botelho. Either Buchner or Baker went full on moron with the protection slide.

It feels like if the play calls for this protection or this first read, he can't adjust it pre snap, and clearly not post snap.

I REALLY want to be wrong about this, but the only way that I think that the staff can afford to play Tyler this season is with short packages of QB option and run-oriented sequences, highly restricted choices involved --- do this this way and quickly --- and hand the ball back to Sam.

Not very imaginative by me, but our number two QB doesn't ever really look like a QB to me --- great eyetest athlete, yes.

I think it was on Hit and Hustle (best Pod for my money), Jamie said that TB is the kind of QB that you have to have a set game plan for, or something to that effect. It made a lot of sense, and echo's what you said above.

Sam Heisman - I like it. He could show us the NIL potential of a high profile, ND QB Heisman front runner which would pay the biggest dividends. Amazing how our WR group is suddenly talented with a top tier QB distributing the ball. I can't even comprehend how this opens up the run game but you know Hartman is confident in the teams ability to go the distance with a solid D and run game to carry plenty of water so he isn't doing it alone.

Think of the flaws surrounding Jimmy Clausen, Brady Quinn, Deshone Kizer compared to this team - and Hartman is probably a better QB than all of them.

I like your optimism but I think Clausen and Quinn were better QB's.

The fact it is debatable has me giddy. Floyd, Tate and Rudolph as targets for Clausen giving him one of the best supporting casts of pass catchers we have seen for a while. Quinn a bit less so but Jeff Samardzija, Rhema McNight and John Carlson weren't exactly slouches his final year with Stovall and Fasano graduating the year before. Fuller and St. Brown probably got Kiser drafted.

Hartman might not throw for 4000 yards b/c he won't play the 4th quarter in half the games and the running game will be stouter than ever with the box loosened up.

Even if he’s a tad below Quinn and Clausen, he’ll have a defense and run game they never had

Was it just me or did anyone else think Harman's rpo game was a little slow meshy? At least he has the tackles to protect him for that extra second...

Yes indeed…..it appears he’s still adapting to the new timing. Fortunately, his decision making and accuracy still looked good.

Maybe, but I think one of the PODs mentioned this and now it's in your head. I saw a tab bit longer hand off/RPO look. Nothing like the slow mesh he was working with. ALSO, this could be a brilliant move by the staff. It isn't re-inventing the wheel for SHART, it might be enough change to call it an RPO, but not so slow its the mesh. Almost a 1/2 way point for the QB.
