Except Sampson says Harry retired a week ago. 🤷‍♂️
Fair enough. But, I do think that Harry was a Tommy guy, and we know that Tommy was hired before Marcus. Harry was great, and I definitely wanted him back, but it will now be Marcus' staff, completely. And really, that is how it should be. I just don't think that panic button should be pushed at this point, as some other are doing. Let's be honest. We haven't won a NC in 35 years. May take some bold moves to get over the top. But, make no mistake, I am sad that he is retiring, but happy for him. He did great things at ND.

“I have made the decision to retire,” Hiestand said in a statement. “It is important to me to spend time with my family, as I have two kids competing in college athletics, one for his last season, and I have decided it is time for me to be a part of that. I am thankful for the opportunity Father (John) Jenkins, Jack Swarbrick and especially Coach Freeman gave me to return for a seventh season coaching the offensive line at Notre Dame.

That's all that needs to be said. Our lives are going to go on.

Utah’s OL coach Jim Harding is from the Toledo area and also coached HS ball in Michigan. He hasn’t produced a ton of NFL o-linemen but he’d probably be at least serviceable as our OL coach for the Ludwig offense

My guess:

Harry stuck around because of the familiarity he had with Tommy.

Tommy left and Harry then considered retiring. He decided to wait out some of the OC interviews and see where he fit.

Marcus interviewed Ludwig and he now appears to be the guy, and I imagine Harry spoke with Ludwig about his intentions moving forward and amicably agreed that the best move was for Harry to move on and Ludwig could pursue his own OL coach.
This would certainly explain the timing. ND may have also softened the blow with an incentive like honoring his contract or part of it until it expires. Assuming this is the reason.

He probably never had quite the talent to work with like he would at ND.

I doubt that he has had the opportunity to coach the OL talent level that he would have at ND though.

Sounds reasonable and might be the best scenario for us going forward

OMFG he didn't retire based on a Social Security income..... For the love of god.

He retired because his employment landscape changed and he wants to be with his family. Judging by last year's OLine play he was probably a bit burnt out. The line was hardly dominant as they were with his first stint at ND. Perhaps they might have gotten better this year but last year was not some amazing year for the OLine.

If Ludwig is offered and accepts, should he want to bring Harding with him I think as long as he can pass the ND purity test it would be fine. Harding can coach too, as evidenced by their ass whippings of USC. He's been at Utah since 2014, however, so he's another guy who seems entrenched there with Whittingham.

Seems to be held in high regard as an OL coach among the college coaching community as well.

Reportedly in the area of $600K a year salary.

I’d also throw out Brian Callahan of Minnesota as an OL option. He’s had some pretty good lines on a team that used to be pretty horrible in that department

Depending on the OC hire, you’d have to think there’s going to be a lot of interest in this job. You have a potential #1 pick at left tackle and another possible first rounder on the right side, an experienced QB, a loaded RB room.

Why would you want Iowa’s OL coach. The Hawkeye OL is awful. No thank you.
I have actually heard some good things about Barnett.

The situation at Iowa is at the feet of the head coach who continues to allow his son to be offensive coordinator. Nepotism, as they say.

On that OL note, I bet Fisch comes back for a 4th year, moves over to LT to improve his stock. I think an OC/OL coach would love having back to back 1st rd picks under their "belt"

Big fan of Coach Callahan. Saw him work a JUCO camp about ten years ago at Harper College when he was with EIU. High energy guy and the OL was easily the most fun part of that camp to watch because of him.

All I know about the guy is his drink order... I was next to him at the airport bar in Cincinnati right before early signing day this year.
