You get upset? You go to the manager not the customers. I would like to have heard the conversation when the steak was brought out. We might have an instigator and someone who smarted-off back to the instigator.

There may be a lot more to this Golden Corral fight than that tweet suggests. According to local news and police, the fight was over something entirely different. Apparently, there were a couple of Hispanic men who allegedly made racist comments and insults to a couple of black children. The children told their family, who then confronted the Hispanic men. They doubled down on their insults and the Blacks boiled over. When police arrived, the Hispanic guys continued to be aggressive and disruptive, so the cops arrested them. Those two were the only ones arrested and no others are expected.

This is pretty amazing in this day and age. A whistleblower in Auburn University's Black Student Union shared a message that has apparently been created by and circulated among members of the group. It's a list of racist names for white people, who they refer to as Creakers. Personally, I found the list funny and laughed at most of it, and thought it read like something from a bunch of fifth grade boys making up names for girls, not something you'd expect from college students. OTOH, it's definitely racist as hell and inappropriate in today's environment. It'll be interesting to see how Auburn University handles this.

All the names in the list, the smiley faces, comments in parentheses, repetitions, misspellings, and everything else are those of the author(s) of the list.

Why does there need to be a separate Black Student Union? I thought the whole purpose of a student union is that it is for all students. Do we also need separate student unions for all the other races and different human beings? We used to have forced segregation and then forced integration, now it’s voluntary segregation? Where is the common sense?

Same basic reason there is a Vietnamese Student Association?

Same fundamental reason there are over 500 organizations?

Or is this one of those times where we are going to play pretend? Are we going to pretend that black students, at a non-HBCU southern university, have never had a good reason to form a group to represent their causes or concerns?

I don’t have a problem with students or any other group of people forming a club or an association but in my mind Student Union should apply to all students. I think the purpose of a union of students should be to bring EVERYONE together on common ground. I also realize that the old saying of birds of a feather flock together has some truth to it for a number of reasons.

P.S. Funny you used that example because my significant other is Vietnamese……she came to the US as one of the “boat people” as they were called. Her father was a police officer in Saigon and helped the US during the war. Had they stayed, he would have been killed and the rest of the family would have been sent to a Communist re-education camp. They made it out on a barge just a couple of weeks before the official fall of the city.

And that is where the disconnect is. Go search that catalog for the word "Union". The "Black Student Union" is the only one but there are still plenty of organizations that can,

"To represent the interests and concerns of Black Students at Auburn University, to bring together all aspects of Black Student life for the purpose of improving the campus environment, and encourage the involvement of Black students in ALL campus activities. Discourage and abate institutional, individual acts, and symbols of racism, promote the Auburn Spirit and tradition of excellence and heighten awareness and friendship between races."

or something similar, so all students can find groups to join or represent them.

:) Only used it because when I typed "union" into the search it was one of the 3 results, but it's mission is also noble and worthwhile

"The Vietnamese Student Association at Auburn University will cultivate students to embrace Vietnamese culture through community service, cultural events, and philanthropic outreach. VSA Auburn will collaborate with the associated region within The Union of North American Vietnamese Student Associations (UNAVSA) to promote these traditions. "

On a personal note, I am thrilled that our country saved your father-in-law, his family, and the many, many, others that faced execution/camps. It warms my heart and one of the thing that make me proud to be an American.

When you finish arguing about the definition of the word union or whether various student unions are necessary, I'd love to hear your view on the actual subject at hand: the Black Student Union's list of racial slurs.

It should be dealt with by the university.

Sure, but what do you think the university should do if it turns out to be legit? This isn't an informal group of students. The BSU is an officially sanctioned campus organization that receives university funds and recognition. Let me put it another way: if it were a similar group of white students and they circulated such a list of slurs for Blacks or Asians or LGBQTs, what would you say and how would you want the university to respond?

I understand your point but to simplify……..I think of the word “union” as joining together. My view is that people of all different types should join together and college life is no exception. Sometimes the message seems more like inclusive but separate. As far as the article that Bishop posted, it seems like making a list of words for people not part of your group is not a way to achieve a positive campus environment. In fact, I would think that is a detriment. I realize that all of us have a built in ability for discrimination and name calling is one of the ways it shows.

Not to make a long story longer but the US wasn’t all that helpful to their family. They were given citizenship here in the USA but they were only able to get here on an overcrowded barge (3 weeks at sea) that was sponsored by the Lutheran Church. There was no other assistance given by the US government, they were essentially left to make it on their own. Husband, wife and 4 kids. Im leaving out a lot of the details that aren’t so rosy.

I have never in my life worked at a University and I'm not going to assume how they are going to handle it.

Ask me after you hear what the University did, not before.

I liked this post before I read the whole thing and have unliked it because, well like you said it's not a rosy story.

I'm just sitting here shaking my head in disappointment. I'm glad that you and your wife were able to find each other, but it really sucks that her family had to endure what they did.

I don't know if this will make you feel any better (probably not), but the US actually did a fairly good job getting interpreters and Afghan military that worked hand-in-hand with NATO out of the country. I have a very good friend was an air advisor over there in 2016 and he was frantically making calls to anyone and everyone he could think of to make sure one of the Afghans he worked with got out (he did).

I also had a good long conversation with an Airman that volunteered to go work the refugee camp by McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. He was put in charge of recreation for one of the camp areas and gushed about how rewarding it was for him to help those people have some fun and entertainment.

I didn't ask you anything about what you think the university is going to do. I asked you what you think they SHOULD do. That's a completely different question.

I answered that too.
"It should be dealt with" is your informative, honest, "let me tell you what I really think" answer? I mean, whoa! Slow down there. Don't get too specific or anything, bro.

Here's what every single one of us reading this now knows (though half of you can't admit it). Every time there's any sort of racist act from Whites or Conservatives, those of you on the Left get outraged and go on a virtue signaling binge, calling for canceling, heads to roll, crying about what an evil thing it is, and on & on. Cack would be here posting nonstop about it and bombarding us with tweets. When the roles are reversed, you don't have the character or the cojones to denounce it from your own side.

You weasel and waffle and go with some noncommittal, weak as baby piss "It should be dealt with" nothingness instead of manning up and taking a stand. If it was white students making such a list about black or gay students, just about every Conservative on here would denounce it and call for their expulsion. Those of you on the Left in here have no such values, character, or balls. You're too afraid to denounce any wrongdoing from you own side.

No worries……she and her family are still glad they had the opportunity to come to the USA, it was just very difficult for them. Having to overcome adversity made them even stronger and appreciative of life. Probably a good lesson for all of us. I hope that the US government has learned some lessons about how to help the people that help them in war torn countries. Hopefully that is the case with the Afghans although I think the exit from their country could’ve been handled a bit better. We certainly can’t expect perfection but we can try to achieve it. Glad to hear you received that positive feedback, that is encouraging!

Totally irrelevant to the subject being discussed. That's a matter for the Politics thread. Why change the subject and try to avoid discussing this one? When you're on the right side of an issue and use facts and logic, such attempts to deflect and change the subject are unnecessary.

Humor us. Besides all the ties to white supremacy and white nationalism, why shouldn’t the coup be discussed in the racism thread?
