I was referring to the talent ND is losing on the dline after this season, but he needs to step his game up recruiting too. NIL stuff isn't slowing down Stuckey, Deland or Hiestand.
Every top 20 DL guy went to a big NIL school Bama, Clemson, Ohio State, Georgia, USC, Tenn

Per ISD, allegedly got $200k to go to FSU. Brought up in a thread about locker room issues at Wisconsin and Ohio State where either 1) some players getting money and flaunting it is causing issues 2) promises to players not being kept 3) new recruits and young players who have done nothing are getting lots of money while producing veterans aren't getting shit.

Basically, it was brought up that if you pay someone like Fiske $200k and don't pay same or better to returning starters on the DL then there is potential for those guys to be dissatisfied or want to transfer. I continue to believe that while it's easy to bemoan recruiting losses to NIL, the focus for ND to have a healthy culture needs to be making sure stars like Alt, Mayer, Foskey, etc. get market value NIL rather than chasing unproven players. If you can establish that baseline, then it also makes the "meritocracy" better for everyone (including high profile transfers). On most non-revenue sports, scholarships are handed out that way such that most money is reserved for starters or maybe a couple "star" incoming players, and they readjust the allotment each year.

The problem to me is that we are going to need more Alts and Foskeys because the Mayers probably won't go somewhere they aren't getting an upfront deal with in the first place.

Making sure guys on our roster are taken care of is playing defense. Going out and getting the best players is offense.

Even if we have the best deals for established players in the country, but we have no room to go out and get the best players, then we are basically Iowa.

Iowa got Cade McNamara, so they are giving "deals." Didn't Fiske have USC in his final 3? Glad to see him not going there. Would've been nice to see him play in the golden helmet, but I don't think this is a terrible loss for ND not getting him.

The part of this that is being lost is prospects have been getting money out of HS since forever. This doesn’t change that. Guys like Mayer, Hamilton, etc could’ve gotten money handshakes and McDonald’s bags of cash if that’s what they were looking for. There will still be a lot of very talented prospects that want what ND is. We just have to find them

Great post! Make you appreciate guys like Mayer & Hamilton that value what ND has to offer. Freeman will find those Mayer & Hamilton like prospects that will want to come to ND for what it is.

For the recruits in 2023 that got big money it will be interesting to see how their career pans out in 2-3 years, for some lesser years.
