I can see why Rhule would pounce on this. Low bar to climb over to achieve success, pressure but not SEC pressure, good history, you win 10 games and you’ll be a savior to them.

Outside of a few of the SEC jobs, not sure which other jobs open up this year that compares to Nebraska so your original point is stands.
Right. Rhule doesn't need Auburn nonsense. Wisconsin is basically handing the keys to their DC. Nothing else open yet compares, and there's no obvious big ones opening up. Feels like there's always weird smoke around Franklin leaving Penn State, and Rhule would miss out on that job now, but also Franklin never actually leaves so...

But yes had Rhule been on the market a year ago he could be coaching at USC or Oklahoma or Texas or Notre Dame right now. Last cycle was bananas, when you think about it.

People on here have no clue about Nebraska.

I HATE Nebraska, but my father-in-law is a booster there & I can tell you that’s all people out there have & they will spend ANY amount of money & do ANYTHING to be good.

They could have waited 6 days to fire Frost and paid him $7 million instead of $14 million. They literally raised the extra $7 million overnight & fired him because they didn’t want him around a single day longer.

My in-laws are straight-laced as it comes, but say words & act totally different at NU games. They have no problem with Osbourne, PEDS, felons, etc… of the Nebraska championship years.

The B1G West sucks & I guarantee you that Nebraska will spend more money than any two teams combined in the West on their football program. If Rhule does well, they will run the West.

It’s bizarre how much Nebraska football means to those people. If a family only makes $50k a year, they will still donate to the program whatever they can.
And most people don’t realize it, but between Berkshire-Hathaway, Mutual, Con-Agra, there are a lot of Billionaire NU grads/fans in Omaha who will try to buy another title. (I know my in-laws would pay anything for a title).

Pretty sure most people realize all those things

Doesn’t translate to success today UNLESS they plan to unload the clip on NIL. They’ll outspend Iowa? Congrats, Big Ten divisions are going away. Outspend OSU, Michigan, Mich St, PSU, and USC in an infertile recruiting ground.

This is off the top of my head:

Texas - John Mackovic
USC - Paul Hackett
UGA - Jim Donnan
Alabama - Mike Shula
Oklahoma - John Blake
Florida - Gary Darnell
Miami - Lou Saban
LSU - Gerry DiNardo
Colorado - Chuck Fairbanks
Well done. Darnell was interim as he replaced Galen Hall. Most fans can name all those off the top of their head.

I guess that's good for a HC who's looking for nice pay for 3-4 years, and for fan's living in the past. Recruits don't want to go there, and their results are terrible.
I’m pretty sure this has been said about ND multiple times in the Davie/Willingham/Weis eras.

Auburn zeroing in on Hugh Freeze is gross as hell.
It makes perfect sense. Especially being their second choice to Kiffin. But Deion Sanders' school is at the forefront of the minds of university presidents. Riiiiiiight.

Auburn having Bruce Pearl and Hugh Freeze on the same campus is most certainly gross but it just looks and feels so so right.

Matt Rhule is likely going to get whatever he wants at Nebraska. They want to win again really bad. It's a good hire.

The thing I appreciate about the SEC sans Vandy is that they at least accept who they are and what they’re about. It’s all right out there in the open. No pretense necessary.

Absolutely.

Credit Freeze for rehabbing his image too. Liberty, of all places? Brilliant. For every person who can see right through that, there are two that totally but into it and slop up every last crumb on the plate.

Plus the guy can coach ball. He's won games this year with a QB he may as well have pulled out of the stands. Whatever faults he may have as a person, big or small, he can coach.

Nebraska didn't even reach the heights those coaches got to, which says a lot about the state of that program. Weis and Davie both went to NY6 bowls, and Willingham went to two bowls and finished the season ranked once. Those are all things Nebraska hasn't done since 2012. It's not even really comparable.

FWIW, I don’t believe the Freeze rumors, I think this is a fake out, and I still think it’s Kiffin to Auburn.

Rhule must have massive gambling debts and needs to take this job. I just don’t see it.

That’s great. And none of any of that matters if kids won’t go there. And KIDS WONT GO THERE. PERIOD. It’s over for Nebraska. Completely over. They are an 8 win ceiling school in the B1G now, and that’s what they will always be in the best years. Exactly like Minnesota.

A great deal of truth here and the most likely outcome.

I saw that Ole Miss found a way around the contract limitations for state employees and that he is looking at an 8 year extension for between 8.5-9 mil per year.

Auburn site says Kiffin passed because his family wants to stay at Ole Miss + new contract + increased NIL promises

Sounds like he’s maybe more content than hungry to win a ship at all costs than I thought

No no no, THIS will be the year they buy a title. Surely there aren't other schools with deep pockets, fertile recruiting grounds, better image, recent success, and better locations.

There seems to also be a thought that he could be in line for taking over Alabama once Saban is done. If he goes to Auburn, that is probably not happening. If he can get the same money and institutional support at Ole Miss as at Auburn, he would have a better potential future and not have to worry about dealing with the crazy Auburn boosters.

As for Rhule, even if he doesn't think Nebraska can get to a national championship level, I bet he could get them to the Penn State level, which would be good enough to still be an option at a place that can win a national championship.

Rhule can get them respectable and then bolt to Penn State once they realize that James Franklin isn't going to ever consistently beat Ohio St. and Michigan.

Yep. Whether it’s Bama or some other truly elite job, Kiffin will be better positioned for it by staying at Ole Miss another couple years and building on what he’s got than jumping to Auburn now.

Franklin to the NFL and O’Brien back to Penn State.

Franklin would get absolutely killed in the NFL. He has no schematic chops at all.
Oh absolutely. Was more spitballing galaxy brain ideas.

Although, the ultimate fun galaxy brained idea would be Brian Kelly jumping to the NFL. All hell would break loose in the coaching carousel.

But fun for fans!
