2023 QB Cycle Cloudy Board

This is, unironically, what is happening. Allegedly. The recruiting pitch is "I want to throw the ball all over the place but need a QB that can do it. We are running the ball this year because it fits our personnel." ND is allegedly in the mix with a bunch of players -- including Jackson Arnold, who that one account never should have publicized was talking to the staff... Arnold is looking for a backup plan for if Lebby leaves for somewhere else that doesn't fit him... -- but none of them really want to pull the trigger on a visit or flip right now. Some are also, allegedly, using ND interest to leverage NIL deals from the schools they're currently committed to.

Bigger picture -- I think ND really wants to focus on landing the best transfer QB they can this offseason but it'll be hard for a lot of undergrad transfers who may not be a fit or who have better options. NIL is also a huge factor. We'll see.
So Lebby gets a HC job at some G5 school (USF?) and we take grad transfer Dillon Gabriel and 2023 QB Jackson Arnold from OU. I'm okay with that.

This is gonna be an old man take, but if you’re comfy committed to a spot that has a 0% chance of making the CFP and don’t see the upside of choosing ND instead, probably for the best…
My question is whether these guys ND is talking to are actually getting offers or if ND is trying to line them up as Plan B while waiting out Arnold or something.

Disagree.

The name of the game is PT, NIL, draft in some order, with CFP appearance likely last. You don't need CFP to get the other three. It's been years (2015?) since ND has had a high flying offense and it's rarely been consistently high flying. If I was a 2023 recruit, I would be skeptical of what ND could provide me with Carr coming down the pipe and a likely grad transfer. There may be an element of ND benefiting from lack of opportunity elsewhere, but I probably am not risking opportunity at one school for perhaps lighting to strike at ND for me.

My take from Loy's comments is they are still waiting on some of these guys. Like Chiles, for example, the post was Loy liked ND, IF ND went all in on him. Likely means they haven't and that must be for some reason.

Does Carr staying in the '24 class now change that? Does timing force their hand? Don't know the answers too that but if I were them I'd take a guy with upside (Chiles reasonably has that) and then focus on the transfer portal.

I wasn’t really looking it from that POV. Why I called it a self aware old man take, the implication was I don’t really want a QB that isn’t hungry to win. He probably wouldn’t cut it here and elevate us anyways then. If someone is prioritizing going 7 - 5 at “Insert generic school” but getting paid 200K to do it. Good luck, we should shoot higher.

Understand. But there are many different factors. You think Minchey or Johnson are deprioritizing winning? Is that in their best interest?

I think Minchey not even visiting is bizarre actually yes and potentially not in his best interest to go with Narduzzi. His future HC basically has come out publicly against passing the ball and scoring points. Trashed the OC that produced Pickett. Pitt as a program is a 7 - 8 win team more than likely every year he’ll be on campus.

Avery Johnson has given ND consideration at least.

Yeah, this year their starter (Slovis) has even worse numbers than Pyne.

I hate Nard dog just as much as anybody. But Pitt has basically had two QBs since he took over and a gap year. Peterman was taken in the 4th or 5th round after a few years, then obviously Kenny P. There are far worse places to go if you are an aspiring QB for the NFL. I would go to ND first, but there are valid reasons not to while still trying to get to the league.

Is it safe to say that IF ND lands a '23 (non-transfer) QB it will be a NSD surprise?

I would say that’s the case unless we get wind of a “visitor” for the BC game……that would give us some insight.

Like the day of NSD? I don’t think so.

I think it’s safe to say the 2023 QB will be a flip from an inferior team or have undergone a coaching change

I would bet we get a 23 QB before signing day. Its been reported for both Jacobe Robinson and Aidan Chiles that if ND pushes they has a very good shot at either of those guys which makes me think there are other higher rated QBs they are talking with that the staff believes they have some shot at and if they don't get anywhere with they will start pushing for those two. I can't see them waiting until NSD to make that push.

eeeeeek....

Loy regarding Chiles. A poster asked what changed from him being confident they could flip if they went all in.

"Not sure they are going all-in, which surprises me. I just don’t understand their decisions with QB right now. Maybe they aren’t overly high on Chiles. It’s confusing."

Seems like that would mean that they think they have a decent chance of flipping a better prospect.

Wonder if we will go after Marcus Stokes with the Rashada flip
Maybe, but just from the stats, it looks like he is having a rough season.

Oh their approach to QB recruiting is just now confusing?

If I'm Freeman, I don't allow Rees to get a QB commit, given his track record, unless someone like Jackson Arnold wants to flip. Rees likely won't be here next year, and given his track record of evaluating QB's, whatever kid they jump in on late will more than likely be a waste of a scholarship or not pan out. Bring in a grad transfer and call it a day.

Don’t allow Rees to sign a kid because he stinks at evaluating unless it’s the kid he early identified before most of the country

It’s not very hard to knock Rees’ recruiting and yet you still manage nonsensical points

I don't think Freeman's going to get the chance to turn down a 2023 QB who wants to commit. No one wants to come here this year.
