I agree in that I don’t think it would work at all in the end, I just think if they could and Freeman felt he could work in that role effectively it would be a home run. Mullen himself at his best has a better QB resume than ND as a school in the 21st century.

Mullen was always on my shortlist to replace Kelly eventually with the caveat that he’d have to iron out some of his and BKs shared issues. Clearly that won’t happen but I could certainly see Mullen back on top soon if, which that’s a big IF, he addresses even some of the reasons he failed in the end at Florida. If ND could get a couple years, one QB out of his old QB magic it could alter the trajectory back to where it should be of QBs at Notre Dame.

All a pipe dream anyways but it’d be Team dream of it over not.
Hey, if Marcus wanted to ride or die with Dan Mullen, I'm all in. 44 years on this Earth and I've been an ND fan for every one of them. I doubt that changes regardless of who the OC is. LOL.

Mullen's best work may have come earlier in his career with Josh Harris at Bowling Green. That kid set the world on fire his senior year under Meyer and Mullen. I thought what he got out of the Fitzgerald kid at Mississippi State was very impressive too. I don't think he's going to step down into an OC role, though. He's either going to HC again at a P5 program or he'll go to the League. His trajectory doesn't seem to be ND regardless.

I think there are a lot of interesting possibilities out there and often times they're the ones that we as fans, even the most engaged down to the very casual, don't always consider or even see. I keep a very open mind.

Check this shit out relative to what ND calls "offense." There is just a huge difference between running something with identity or creativity... where players believe in what's being called and execute with confidence... and grab bag nonsense.

To be fair and critical at the same time. We did run that plays twin brother basically last year. At the same time, I also don’t know why we haven’t seen as much similar to it this year.

In 2012 Wisconsin, who was coming off of 2 consecutive Big Ten Championships and Rose Bowl appearances, fired their OL coach after the first 2 games (1-1) of the season. They averaged 102.5 YPG on the ground in those 2 games. With their new OL coach, they averaged over 261 YPG on the ground. They won a third consecutive Big Ten Championship and went to the Rose Bowl again.

Now, it wasn't their OC, but just sayin'.

I doubt we're going to be able to bring anyone good here in next year. They'll take look at the roster and see their career flash before their eyes. In '23 we'll be working with 1 proven WR (Unless Merriweather and/or Colzie step up before the end of the season), no Mayer, questions at QB, questions on the OL, and our three headed monster at RB. Lots of promise with young recruits coming in, but If you were a big time OC you know too many youth will cost you games. Who says yes to those circumstances?
So we should keep Tommy, Mrs. Reese.

I think that is a desperate argument to say least.

I think many would love to be the OC at ND.

So we should fire HH?

Give the guy a two-year contract then.
There's a ton of potential in the younger classes on our offense (and a lot of our young starters will be better by the end of this season). With a little time to mold it, a smart, creative OC could do quite well for himself.

Ruggiero is the oldest guy on this list by a long shot. Most of them are all in their 30s and 40s but have called plays at the D-IA level.

Kevin Johns Duke OC/QB
Warren Ruggiero Wake Forest OC/QB
Garrett Riley TCU OC/QB
Zach Kittley Texas Tech OC/QB
Barry Lunney Jr. Illinois OC/QB
Matt Mumme Colorado State OC/QB
Kirby Moore Fresno State OC/QB
Ryan Grubb Washington OC/QB
Joey Lynch Vanderbilt OC/QB
Keith Heckendorf Arkansas State OC/QB
Willy Korn Coastal Carolina OC/QB
Clint Trickett Marshall OC/QB
Travis Trickett South Florida OC/QB
Tim Cramsey Memphis OC/QB

Tell us why he would leave the NFL to come back to a college team with roster issues?
Money is the only answer. Whether looking for a retread HC or someone else, ND realistically is going to need to pay $2m/year with 3 years guaranteed to get anyone to take on this dumpster fire.

They currently have a top five recruiting class verballed. Carr could reclassify. You add Love and Lyons on top of that.

There are far more dire situations you could be walking into.

Yep. The "dumpster fire" nature of our offensive depth chart could look quite different in a year or two. We do have to hold on to those recruits though.

LOL

Tommy get off IE and find a way to score at least 20 against Cal.

Blindly defending and making excuses for one of the worst OC's in college football isn't exactly adding to the discussion either.
I've said Rees shares some of the blame, but this bed was made in the '19 and '20 recruiting. Take a look at those lists and see where we're at with upperclassmen this year. Most of the good talent is gone. This is '07 all over again when Weis was working with Ty's '03 and '04 recruiting classes, some of us are old enough to remember that season. This is how 6 freshmen saw significant playing time last year and why so many Sophomores are starting.

Tommy could never design anything like that.

Not the most inspiring list outside of Ruggiero.

Yeah. Not excusing Rees here but look at our 2020 class. On offense it's Mayer, Tyree and... Pyne?

2019 we went big on OL and, well, the only offensive player who turned out to be any good was Williams, who was not very highly-rated, and is now gone.

Those are our current juniors and seniors. It's remarkable how weak those classes are, especially on offense.

I’m old enough. Not even close to the same level of recruiting as those Ty classes. This team may not have playoff caliber talent on the offense but it’s completely underperformed relative to its talent. That’s the issue. Our OC is not currently getting the most out of his talent. I hope that changes soon.

Listen to the podcasts they are bagging on the offense. So others are seeing the failures.
