The silver lining in college football is that if you are this bad at football you can poach other players from other teams. You can offset with globs if money. What once was seen as a 3-4 year rebuild can now take 1 offseason of transfers.

Sadly Notre Dame is unwilling to participate or unwilling to compete with the tops dogs with NIL and they rarely take transfers. ND just lost to Marshall. Bad QB play, bad OL, bad WRs. The OL is the most likely to rebuild best for next year. The QB room isn’t changing, the WRs might change a little. If Notre Dame as a whole is serious about football (they aren’t) they should have found an experienced HC, found a QB transfer, filled the WR room and plugged others holes no matter the cost, because they should be able to afford it. They refuse…

Rebuild is not a thing anymore. If you are 5* recruit you don’t have want to wait to get good in 2-3 years. You want to win now, you want NIL money. Losers don’t hump the prom Queen and losers don’t get as much NIL. Play the game off the field to play the game better on the field.

There is no reason USC, Bama, Georgia, Florida Schools, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio State of the world to be bad anymore. We have free agency every year with a cap-less salary cap. ND can but won’t.

We absolutely can't keep hamstringing ourselves if we want to succeed at the highest level. Texas and USC have both taken in quite a few transfers recently. Texas was able to hang with Alabama in that game today. We can't set the bar incredibly high and expect that we'll fill holes on the team out of thin air.

Funny cause the ABSOLUTE best case scenario of Marcus freeman is him going 14-0 and leaving ND for OSU. Worst Case scenario?…. Look in a mirror.

With all of the BS changes In CFB, We have zero reasons to schedule a low end Marshal team ever again. Swarbrick's not thinking ahead

I'm starting to think Kelly saw the writing on the wall with offensive recruits and decided to get out of dodge before another 2016 season.
Perhaps but I questioned Kelly’s loyalty to Notre Dame when he was initially hired. I still lean him leaving for money and a lot of it.
Makes me wonder if after his first week if he’s second guessing himself.
He’s still a bum to me though.

His stock wasn't going to get any better this year, and he probably knew his seat might even get a little hot again. He absolutely took the money, but he went for it because it was guaranteed and his job going forward at ND might not be.

Exactly. This is the same crap offense with or without Kelly. But with Del and Quinn too. We did lose a good TE coach though.

This was my thought the entire game. Kelly knew this was coming and bailed out when he could. I really don't know what would be different at this point. Maybe Kelly's experience is enough to eek out a win against Toledo, so maybe they beat Marshall. I don't know. The OL can't get a run game going and there is talent in the backfield. The WR corps is thin and young. The back up QB is an oompa loompa from Connecticut. The offense is basically throwing five yard passes to the All American tight end.

Marshall had 8 Power Five transfers getting significant reps on Saturday. Key contributors for several Top 25 teams are transfers at the moment. This is a market that Notre Dame isn't going to tap into and the rest of the world is going to utilize to their advantage, so much so that there is already a little bit of chaos in college football in mid September. The playing field shifts when teams like Marshall and Appalachian State can get Power Five players in an off season they normally would not sign in a recruiting class. They go into South Bend and College Station to win games they otherwise would not have been able to just a couple of years ago.

People talk about NIL being a game changer, but the transfer portal is already showing us very early snippets of what it can do, especially for the second tier P5 schools and the G5 schools.

The quality and quantity of this roster as it was left to this staff might be in need of more upgrades than we initially thought, but it can only be upgraded with recruiting classes and a couple of grad transfers every year. That's going to take a lot more time than landing JUCO players and any P5 transfer they desire.

Not really accurate for App State tbh:

In addition to their December signees from the high school level and incoming transfers who participated in spring practice, the Mountaineers have signed, listed in alphabetical order: DL Kevin Abrams-Verwayne (Garden City Community College), DB Dexter Lawson Jr. (Central Connecticut State), QB Brady McBride (Texas State), WR Tyler Page (SMU), LB Andrew Parker (Arkansas), DB DJ VanHook (Long Beach City College) and OL Bucky Williams (Austin Peay).

Sometimes people do run from their mistakes.
Right but he’s the HC so he should see those mistakes long before 2021. If he did see them, what did he do to fix them b/c it doesn’t look like he did anything. I think had he stayed, he would’ve run out the string and then been forced to retire after driving the program even lower.

Folks talking about Kelly bailing because he saw the writing on the wall with this offense are giving a dude simply chasing a giant bag WAY too much credit...
Absolutely looked for an opportunity for a big payday, but do you think he does that if recruiting as decent in '19 and '20? 6 or more freshmen saw significant playing time last year on offense or were actual starters over upperclassmen. That doesn't happen if you're recruiting well. Go back and look at those classes. Those should be our Juniors and Seniors leading the team. It's Mayer, Foskey, and quite a few question marks. That's it. Any other good talent we had got drafted.

Henry Colombi is 119th in CFB in QBR despite his immaculate game against ND. Truly played the game of his life.

Man, sucks.

But we all have to learn to just forget about Marshall. It’s obvious that it was just one of those weird, terrible, inexplicable anomalies where the universe just decides “nope.”

We were coming off of OSU, had lost our starting QB mid-game, Pyne hadn’t yet found Jesus, and our O line was still wandering the desert. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, everything-go-right chance for Marshall. A perfect storm.

I hate that I have to take shit from my USC buddy because of it. He thinks they’re gonna cream us in Nov. I know they’re not though. We just put it all together the exact wrong way in that game. It happens with new coaches especially all the time.

We’ll be fine. And it’s healthier not to dwell on this one.

I like to pretend the season didn't really start till Drew took over as starter and the OL got their shit together at Cal. We feel like a different team from that point on. We'll be ranked again soon, things will fall into place. Just keep winning.
