A key difference: In the NFL players sign multi-year contracts. NCAA at present is by far the most wide-open free agency in all of sports.

It's insane. How are you even supposed to manage your roster when your best player can get hired away by another program on a random weekend in April? And it really does not benefit the vast majority of programs, just the handful with tons of dumb money to throw around. Hard to see this lasting. As others have said the free transfer rule is easiest thing to fix right now.

It is a interesting case of reporting here. Can the media pine for nostalgia enough to actually make a difference? Maybe not but there’s certainly a reason reported phone calls and everything are being leaked

USC can probably get Caleb Williams, who is from the same area as Addison, to tell Addison to come play with him and what he's pulling in NIL.

I think you probably have the order flipped

Caleb Williams probably did get USC to go after Addison to come play with him

Unless USC was exceptionally stupid about it (like using university resources a la Hugh Freeze) or somebody decides to go on record there's effectively nothing the NCAA can do to investigate it.

100% USC was behind this. However, you can't recruit a player that isn't in the portal. So I have no doubt USC would tell the NCAA (like they would ever investigate this) that they had no contact until after he went in the portal. They can say that Williams had contact and Williams wouldn't get in trouble.

Per the article I just posted in the NIL thread it appears the USC Collective was who reached out to Addison.

I have been to enough USC ND games to know that when the USC "collective" reaches out to you, you don't say a word. You just nod your head, grab their hand and hope it's not a dream.

curious to see whether a team will ever have it happen that so many offensive lineman transfer at one time they are unable to field a team without walk-on's etc

autotransfer rule just can’t exist in college sports. All of this was so predictable to anyone with a brain.

Might even start fielding tryouts or transferring kids from intramural teams to active roster.
