Forgive the little side gripe: I'm kind of upset with some students of mine... out in the halls before class watching these videos hooting and hollering about how awesome this is and how badass it would be to be in something like that. These are some of the same students who get super up in arms and bitch and moan about any little perceived injustice on campus/at home, real or completely imagined. I hear about it a lot... but missiles landing in backyards is 'cool bro.'
There is reading history and there is understanding history and it's implications. We live in a world of instant gratification and knee jerk reactions. I am finding that even with people I know to be well educated there there is very little understanding of implication/ramification. There is very little to know critical thinking anymore. In defense of this, it feels as if you have a well thought out opinion, think critically or don't jump in with the mob after watching a 10 second cell phone video, you become a racist/sexist/toxic person and get canceled.
Example, I had what I thought was a nice conversation with someone who worked in D.C.. We got into a few things, one being abortion/rights and My body my choice. I tend to be more middle, but when in doubt lean conservative. I asked not as my own opinion, but as a question for debate, that how can someone say "my body my choice in regards to a human life", but in the same breath say someone shouldn't have a choice to be vaccinated. Without mentioning ANYTHING about my political leaning prior to this, she blew up, called me an idiot, sexist, racist Trump loving ass hole. I have a tattoo on my arm that says "Let Go and Let God" and she proceeded to rip me for loving Jesus.
To her credit, she is right about one thing... I am an asshole. My point being, there is no debate, no critical thinking, no room for learning anymore. If you only get news/info from people you agree with, you are only ever getting one side of the story. I just don't get it
