ND is nowhere close to being elite if losing a DL coach has the negative impact you seem to think it will.

Top programs lose coaches, replace them and keep rolling every year. I expect ND to do the same.

Grown up in room.

How has this just appeared though? You would think that given Elston’s reputation he would have notified Freeman and given at least a couple days notice so we could get things moving on our side. Just amazing that no one saw any of this coming.

So any early top targets out there that we would like to see. Gotta be a big time hire, and can’t be a miss.

Its going to be interesting to see how he is replaced. Just throwing a name out there. Ohio State just fired Al Washington. He was coaching LBs for them, but played DT and has coached DL before, notably at Cincinnati when Freeman was DC. The opening allows the new DC to bring in his own guy, but I could also see Washington being given an interview and he might be better than whoever the DC was going to bring.

That may well have happened given the rumors over the last day or two that the new DC wants to bring in some staff with him.

Top programs don't consistently lose coaches to "lateral" moves. After a while you have to wonder if they are really lateral or actually a step up, meaning we are a step below them.

ugh just dumb not the biggest Heacock fan and I wouldn’t want his staff to be honest just not at a level I would feel comfortable with.

Elston goes and MF now has to replace him. Ok - so why is the sky falling on IE??? Yes - bad loss.. Irish fans have experienced this enough already this year. But, MF has made some strides and I'm sure the recruits in place see that or should. Why don't we see what MF does to replace (which he is probably on the phone right now looking) before IE sticks 'their' head in the sand???

Who are the coaches ND is consistently losing to lateral moves?

Kelly had been looking for a way out since 2012 so hard for me to really count him.

The way this is all going down so fast you have to assume it’s all related to other hires.

Elko, Kelly, Elston. 3 of our most important coaches in the span of like 4 years.

Elko and Kelly were pretty unique situations and a lot of $ was involved. I think this will play out to indicate that Elston is similar given it’s his alma mater and ND is brining in a new D coordinator.

ND appears to have done well replacing Kelly and did very well replacing Elko. I am hopeful the Elston situation will
be similar.

Recruits, players, other coaching staffs recruiting against us.

I'm not saying ND won't come out on top at the end of all this, but right now, it reflects poorly.

Let me see if I'm getting this right: A 47 year old DL coach who has been coaching DL for twenty years and has never been an HC or DC who was with ND's previous coach Brian Kelly for the last 16 years leaves to be the DL coach at Michigan, the school he attended and played football, and it reflects poorly on Notre Dame Football?

I don't understand what details have been presented that are making everyone jump to conclusions. I like Mike Elston and appreciate what he's done for the program all of these years, but we're talking about college football coaches. These guys move around. Stuff happens behind the scenes that can often have nothing to do with money, titles, weather, whatever. It's unexpected and disappointing, sure, maybe even sad but that's life. Stuff happens, you decide how to respond.

The people in that building are going to go to work and replace him. They will have spring football and a 2022 season. It all moves on. It kept going after Alford left, Elko left, etc.

Some of you are acting like we are losing Freeman id rather lose Elston than Freeman

Elston has proven more at ND than Freeman has so far...

I brought it up on the elston page but what about Sean Spencer for his replacement. Was a stud at PSU especially in the recruiting game and probably needs a new job.

edit: never mind he went to duke

Concern over losing a great position coach, recruiter, seller of ND, and developer of talent is justified.

Yeah, other teams lose position coaches all the time. Great programs lose them even more frequently. But those great programs have something that ND does not- head coaches who have had success. The truth is, none of us know if MF will be a good head coach or not. He's coached 1 game, and it didn't go well for him. It's not like a 35 year old first-time head coach has years of experience or contacts, let alone success, to just go out and get another guy to implement into his program. MF is still figuring out who he even is as a head coach.

I think what's lost in all of this is Harbaugh being linked to multiple head coaching jobs. If Harbaugh leaves, Elston may find himself unemployed for a year.

I mean do you think Elston didn’t consider that haha? Their DC and/or Elston himself probably are getting the Balis/Rees your position is safe regardless deal.

You would think, but what if the new HC is adamant about having his own staff choices? Not like anyone at UM has any loyalty to Elston at the moment. Just a very strange move which makes me think he saw some writing on the wall from the Fiesta Bowl + the DC process.

Maybe nobody saw it coming because it just happened. Rumors don't have to float around for a while before a coach leaves, gets hired, etc.

I'm guessing MF[SUP]2[/SUP] will be on the phones with those recruits to calm the waters. He did keep the 22 class together in short order.

This is a position where I absolutely need a decent sample of NFL development in the hire IMO. This is not a young guy blew you away hire like WR

you never heard of him as a player?...honest, i didn't know he was coaching but most who have watched college football for quite some time know who he is

Considering I was in middle school when he was at Clemson, no.

I long for the more simple times. The days when our greatest concern was Stuckey being chosen over Shephard.
