If players want compensation, maybe there should be some type of risk reward in place. If a player wants to transfer, they have to reimburse the school some of the money they received in scholarship and room and board. There would be a lot of details to work out, but it might bring a little more stability.

Yes, but the NFL has negative financial incentive to do that. Right now they force players to go to college for three years and laugh all the way to the bank that they have the best / free minor league in all of sports.

I do wonder what the financials would look like for a NFL minor league to operate in the summers. It would absolutely fail if trying to operate under a MiLB revenue model but putting offseason content onto the NFL's channel might be valuable enough to do it.

Let's see... a 12 team league of 53 players each comes out to 636 players total. If they average $50,000 per year then your labor costs are maybe in the $40 million range in total.

The main negative would be the NFL probably can't actually compete with NCAA in compensation level. If all the five stars are in the NCAA then casual NFL fans probably won't care. Realistically, the draw would be seeing tomorrow's stars. You can further tap into NFL fandom if each team has its own minor league squad but that requires 32 teams which means approximately 1,700 people which is unwieldy for a number of reasons.

Not sure if it's been said here, but the other day Loy reported that ND is going to be actively going after UG transfers now and putting in the effort to make it work.

I keep asking anyone who will listen because I don't know but how does he portal affect the player cap per year? Have you heard anything about that?
I mean, for example... if you take a class of 25 kids... and lose 6-7 kids of varying class standing to the portal.... how many portal kids can you take in?

Looks like they're leaning toward allowing you to exceed the 25-limit based on how many players you lost to the portal in the previous year:

A compromise is finally emerging among a group of proposals. Under the plan, schools can sign 25 new players while gaining additional signee spots for every player who transfers out of their program—up to a certain limit. The extra spots would be based on the number of players who enter the transfer portal under their own volition and would be capped at a figure, such as seven.

For instance, a school that loses five players to the portal can sign 30 new players. A school that loses 10 players to the portal can sign 32 new signees, if the cap were seven. The replacement cap has not been finalized.

In fact, other proposals are being discussed as well, including one that simply increases the total signees to 30, 32 or 35. Another proposal, still being vetted, would require a school to use its 25 spots on high school players and would give a school an additional five to seven spots for transfers.

What's the percentages again? Something like 3% of 3% of high school football players make it to the NFL. The NFL has an average career of 3 years. These kids are not getting what is best for them for the next 10 years, let alone 40. The open transfer portal is just feeding the unrealistic thought that everyone is going to make it and they need to be somewhere new to show it off. This all can be stopped right now if football operated like the MLB. I firmly believe if they said you can play in the minors right out of college, OR you go to college for at least 3 years, we'd see a lot less of this stuff going on.

I think this would benefit few individuals but have a big negative affect on the aggregate. 99% of these athletes think they're better than they are, every 2 star thinks he's a 4 star, etc. You'd have a lot of players opting who aren't ready because they crushed a few camps.

You'd also further dilute CFB which is approaching a really dangerous point with this free agency. College football is much better with 3 years of Trevor Lawrence than without.

He’s been right and wrong in the past. It’s likely a barely vetted so “how do you know this” and if it sounds somewhat legit tweeted it which is why we get “source”

If NCAA makes changes I hope it's with NIL and maybe how it relates to the transfer portal (like you can't earn NIL $ for a year after you transfer, excluding grad transfers).

But I actually think the intention of transfer portal is a good thing . I feel for the athletes that maybe didn't pan out for a particular school, and they just want to go somewhere so they can possibly get on the field.

I also kind of say just let the NFL draft whoever they want. If you want to be an idiot and declare for the draft out of high school go for it.

His opinion isn't worth anything but IF that were to happen it would a monumental upgrade. He's no Kyle Hamilton, but he's an NFL player at position that needs a massive upgrade.

I would think Brandon Joseph & DJ Brown, Ramon Henderson, Houston Griffith, & Xavier Watts would be the deepest safety group ND has had in years right? No high-level NFL talent but serviceable players at both strong and free.

Excited to see what Henderson and Watts grow into because they do have NFL ceilings at Safety. Griffith might be best off at CB next year.

That Brandon Joseph fellow grew up in College Station, TX, which I'm told is changing its slogan to "The Name, Image, Likeness Capital of the World"

I wonder with the incoming '22 class and CBs that will inevitably be moved to safety, do they move Watts back to WR?

Joseph would be a monster addition and give us a little flexibility in the offseason. We have a lot of young secondary talent that needs opportunities at all 4 positions to see where they can bloom. If they can pair him with a big time WR addition (or two), I'd feel much better about our offseason

Loy has never felt badly about anything in his life. Lives on a permanent high from hearing "good things" from the Gug.

Idk if you read his work, but he’s pretty spot on. If he “feels really good”, he probably has sources within the family.

I wonder if he's like this in the rest of his life as well?

Tom's friend: Your wife was seen out with Bob, our mutual buddy, at a hotel last night when you said she was working late.
Tom: Oh, well, she was just putting even MORE extra time into work to get that promotion.
