You can find an expert witness to say whatever you want. That's how these consulting firms work... someone with credentials gets up there to push your narrative. Sometimes they outright lie, but they will always bend the truth in the way they are paid to do.
We've had a handful of impartial, not-being-paid-to-say-something experts for the state give a different account than Fowler. Getting Fowler as an expert witness wasn't bad because he's from South Africa, it's bad because he's currently facing a federal lawsuit over another Black man that died in police custody and he resigned in disgrace because of his handling of Anton Black's autopsy. He literally lost his job and is being sued because of a different Black guy who died from being pinned on the ground by cops for 5 minutes... and that's ironically the best expert witness the defense could come up with. But hey... at least he's consistent.
People get sued for all sorts of things all the time. Jury didn't get to hear about that though.
Our evidence professor mentioned experts testifying for free/reduced awards in big trials should be viewed with skepticism
because they are doing it for free/cheap. High profile opportunity to be a hero and/or secure future employment opportunities.
Seems like the only one with a strong case for being impartial would be the Hennepin County medical examiner guy. He just had to defend his findings. Said he didn't watch anything until he was done with his work. But, perhaps he just doesn't want to watch the city burn down (i didn't get that vibe from him, but you get the point).
People found the heart doctor's tweets... dude felt it was appropriate to diagnose DJT with an illness. I think that's generally considered unethical. He doesn't tweet much, but some social justice stuff. With the political/cultural impact of the trial, seems like he might be invested in a specific outcome.
The state's use-of-force guy was writing letters to the WaPo within days of Mr. Floyd's death. Seems like he had his mind made up before reviewing materials.
99% of medical and science stuff goes right over my head. Maybe they were 100% correct in their testimony. But I wouldn't say they are above reproach.
