Fauria had an outstanding showing at the 7 on 7 tournament in Carson, Cali. Opposing defenders such as Jenoris Jenkins, s: corner), said he was "unstoppable". They tried to get physical with him but were unsuccessful. They must have forgotten that he's 6'8" 250 lbs. His hands were very solid and had great speed. Joseph led Crespi to the championship game but couldn't close it out. They lost to a team from Pahokee, Florida that included Martavious Odoms and Jenkins.

Crespi football's Fauria ready to make tall statement

Joseph Fauria of Crespi of Encino stands a good head above the majority of his teammates.

At 6-foot-7 and 255 pounds, his frame is intimidating at the high school level. And the Celts' biggest kid is by far the loudest. Never short of words, he always has something to say.

"The biggest expectation for him is to come out and be a positive leader for this team. ... He's got a great energy about him and when he comes out and plays the way he can he brings a lot of great energy to this team, verbally and physically," coach Jeremiah Ross said.

The chatty football player is the area's top tight end for the upcoming season and is prepped to guide his team in every way possible. Last season he finished with 22 receptions for 329yards and fourtouchdowns while finishing as an All-Serra League selection.

"He's very vocal, very upbeat, and loves to play the game," Crespi quarterback Kevin Prince said. "He'll always catch it and he'll get as (as many yards afterward) as he can."

Fauria, pronounced FOUR-ee-ay, is ranked the 12thhigh school player in the nation at his position by the recruiting Web site Scout.com.

"I'm really trying to work on leading with my actions more so than my vocals so if people aren't listening they're seeing and if they're not seeing they're listening," Fauria said. "I'm really a vocal guy and everybody knows that. I like to have fun but I like to be serious so whenever you hear somebody screaming it's probably Joe."

In June he used the voice so well known to his teammates to verbally commit to Notre Dame. His leadership skills and his passion for football are qualities he has had the chance to share partially because of his family roots. His uncle Christian, who also was a standout at Crespi, is a 13-year NFL veteran and is always there to offer advice.

"Some people say it may give me a false hope, like I take advantage of it because I'm so close to it, but it gives me a realization that it's possible to get there," Fauria said. "But looking at my uncle, it takes a lot of hard work. He worked really hard to get where he is now and I want to be just like him, if not a little better."

The confidence he evokes is what has made him into the best tight end Ross said he has ever been around. Fauria has improved his strength, adding 25 pounds in the offseason, and has made improvements in his blocking and route running.

Opponents will attempt to disrupt him this season with extra coverage, but, "he's still 6-7, has tremendous hands and is pretty hard to guard," Ross said.

Poly (21-13 over Glenville of Cleveland) and Mission Viejo (26-22 over Cincinnati Moeller) went to Ohio and beat two of that state's powers; and Crespi handled defending L.A. City champion Birmingham of Van Nuys, 20-6.

The first two results were not surprises; the third was and Crespi, led by quarterback Kevin Prince (committed to Cal), safety E.J. Woods (headed to UCLA) and tight end Joseph Fauria (bound for Notre Dame), might be good enough to dethrone Notre Dame [that's Crist and McDonald's team, BTW] in the Serra League.

If ever Crespi High of Encino's football team is primed to overcome Serra League power Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks, this is the year.

Crespi (6-5 in 2006) is loaded with returning talent such as quarterback Kevin Prince, defensive back E.J. Woods and tight end Joseph Fauria - all among Daily News' preseason top-two performers at their respective positions - combined with an exciting influx of impact newcomers, led by sophomore receiver Blake Stanton, a star in the making.

So is this the year of the Celts?

"I hope we can win the league," Woods said. "But you always know our biggest competition is Notre Dame because they always bring their A-game."

Prince, who has received seven Div. I college offers (including UCLA), passed for 1,442 yards and 12 touchdowns last season in just nine games.

The UCLA-bound Woods, also a top running back, must be accounted for at all times, and Fauria, a 6-foot-8 tight end who has committed to Notre Dame, comes from NFL bloodlines.

Crespi certainly is ambitious heading into its much-anticipated season opener Friday against two-time City Section champion Birmingham of Lake Balboa, but the Celts must keep things in persective: Notre Dame (11-1) is the Daily News' preseason No. 1 team, and considering the Knights are 85-6 since 2000 - a winning percentage of .934 - it's unrealistic to favor anyone else.

"Until we beat them, Notre Dame is the team to beat," Crespi coach Jeremiah Ross said. "I have no qualms about that because they deserve it."

Notre Dame is as strong as ever - maybe stronger - because there are standouts everywhere: quarterback Dayne Crist and linebacker Anthony McDonalded are headed to Notre Dame, defensive lineman Wes Horton is going to USC, and running back Thaddeus Brown (1,316 yards, 14 TDs) has three offers.

Limited to five games last season because of a back injury, Crist, 6-5, 225 pounds, is calm under pressure, and has a running back's mentality as a scrambler.

Perennial power Loyola of Los Angeles (4-6) shocked even itself by failing to make the playoffs last year after 26 consecutive winning seasons.

Nevertheless, Loyola's junior varsity team went 9-1 last year, and the Cubs, led by three-year starting offensive lineman Mike Hernandez, figure to make a comeback.

Other top players include offensive lineman Matt Bertole, defensive linemen Johnathan Rossi and Michael Willis, receiver Chris Sheridan, running back Anthony Barr, linebacker Sema'J Myles and tight end John Young.

This season, Loyola plays three home games in the San Fernando Valley (two at Glendale High and one at L.A. Valley College).

Bishop Amat (5-5) is in the same boat as Crespi and Loyola, a proud program hoping to rebound from a down year.

In the third week of the season, the Lancers play local power Hart of Newhall at College of the Canyons.

Crespi QB Prince out for season with knee injury

Kevin Prince, a standout quarterback at Crespi High of Encino who has eight Division I college offers (including UCLA), will miss the rest of the football season after an MRI revealed a torn ACL on his knee.

Prince, a senior, was injured Friday in an opening 20-6 victory over Birmingham of Lake Balboa. He's scheduled to undergo surgery in three weeks.

"This is going to be a hard test for us - we'll see how we handle adversity," tight end Joseph Fauria said. "We can't just react to this. We've got to answer to it, and the next couple of weeks will prove it. We'll see how we do."

Sophomore Bryan Bennett is Prince's replacement. Crespi plays at Kennedy of Granada Hills on Friday.

"This is football, and it will be a great life lesson for our kids," Crespi coach Jeremiah Ross said. "This is a huge loss, but we talked about it, and decided we can just pack it in and call the season over, or they can fight and get after this thing. They're going to get it done."

Crespi 48, Kennedy 0: Starting his first game since replacing injured Kevin Prince, sophomore Brian Bennett threw for four touchdowns in the visiting Celts' victory.

Tight end Joseph Fauria caught two touchdown passes, the first with 9 seconds remaining in the first half to give Crespi a 12-0 lead.

The Celts blew it open in the second half, scoring 36 unanswered points. E.J. Woods rushed for 145 yards on 16 carries.

Crespi's Austin Shanks had back-to-back gains of 31 and 32 yards before being injured just before halftime.

Yes, depending on how you set up the formation it is possible for an OT to be an eligible reciever.

I doubt it's a mistake, more likely it's the Rivals editors putting him at the position they feel he'd be best at. Rivals also lists Baldwin as a TE despite what he says in interviews. It probably doesn't have anything to do with ND, otherwise Blanton and Slaughter wouldn't be listed with the safeties or Posluszny with the OLBs.

From what I've seen and read, it may be more appropriate to list him as a Receiver than OT. This guy is smooth while running and has soft hands. Who cares how big he gets? All the harder to tackle.

That's what happened although I think it's pretty stupid. Rivals had him listed as one of their better TEs for 2/3 of the recruiting process, and that's the posistion ND recruited him for but they took it upon themselves to change his posistion now?

I don't know many TEs who are 6'6" with 80 inch reaches who jump 43 inches. Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez, maybe, but that is about it.

the kid is insanely strong too, scout interviewd him and he said he benches 320.
