Only thing I can really see knocking us down is opportunity to play, but honestly Smith could probably play as a Sophomore. Everything else we've got to be #1 or #2 on thos lists

If Smith looks carefully, he'll notice that--barring injuries--all the guys with his profile (physical specimen, borderline 5-star OTs) all start playing either immediately or as red shirt freshmen under HH? Has there been a recent exception. Elmer, Stanley, Nelson, Bars... already talking about giving Kramer a shot.

HH does not favor veterans, he just prefers not to play freshmen before they can handle it.

It's the "average" 4-star players with durability issues who have to worry about getting lost in the crowd. :) And if you are injury-prone, the ND degree is a huge safety-net.

If your making a list of the things he listed and there was a clear number 1 then I think ND should be the front runner? Best OL coach and out of those schools #1 or 2 getting you prepared for the NFL.

kid probably has pOSU down as a 10/10 for academics/career opportunities :/

On Clemson:

“Clemon’s real cool, they’ve always been a school i’m interested in,” Smith said. “They’ve got a really good squad down there. … We’re always talking Clemson. Coach [Dabo] Swinney and that whole staff they’re really down-to-earth people. The program’s going in the right direction, they made it to the Playoffs and the National Championship game. They came up a little short but I believe they have the talent and the potential to get back there.”

On Ole Miss:

“They’re the first school I got an offer from so naturally, that three-year relationship, it’s a good one,” Smith said. “[Close with] Coach Maurice Harris and Coach Matt Luke and I’m in pretty well with the players, Javon Patterson, Jordan Sims. I have a pretty good relationship down there.”

On Tennessee:

“There’s no doubt, they want me a lot,” Smith said. “Coach Jones is a down-to-earth guy and he’s doing everything in his power honestly to recruit me. Being that my sister went there, I know Knoxville pretty well.” “I like Tennessee a lot.

On OSU:

“You can see it here at The Opening — they’ve got 20 like guys out here, all ranked highly,” Smith said. “They’re going to be some dogs in a couple years. The opportunity is there. I love the Horseshoe. It’s pretty sweet. I’ve been raised on SEC but when I walked in there, I had a special feeling.”“He’s a father-figure type role,” Smith said. “All the coaches are down-to-earth. A lot of coaches on visits, they don’t spend much time with you. It’s like a 30-minute visit, if you’re lucky. But Urban Meyer spends a lot of time with you.”

On Bama:

"“It’s always awesome seeing Coach Saban and I like Coach [Brent] Key, who kind of replaced Mario Cristobal,” Smith said. “Everybody is determined to make it down there. The history of the place. I want to be a captain, get my foot in Denny Chimes. That’s awesome. It’d be mind-blowing.” “I’m going to wait after official visits,” said Smith, who added he’d probably take all five visits. “Right now I can not even name a No. 1 so I’ll wait till all my official visits and stuff before I make any rash decisions.”

I didn't see one of these for ND. OSU and Bama appear to be in good shape based on those quotes.

The difference now is ND has reached critical mass. ND is acquiring these players faster than they are going to the league. McG and AB could be the tackles in '17. If McG leaves this year as expected, Smith still has to jump Bivin, McGovern, Eichenberg and Kraemer his true freshman year. If he redshirts, I'd expect him to start as a Soph but depending on how others in the loaded class of '17 progress, maybe it's not tackle... and THAT might be the issue that makes him look elsewhere because he's a guaranteed starting tackle elsewhere

If he's going to go to Ole Miss that's fine, but OSU/Bama aren't any better for playing time than ND on the OL. They recruit just as well if not better. Bama is about to be loaded, and are about to add the #1 center in the country to their 2017 class. I would assume Clemson's OL recruiting is right there with ours, but I haven't looked. So if he wants early PT, he's going to have to earn it wherever he goes IMO.

OSU 2016: Michael Jordan .93, Malcolm Pridgdeon .93, Tyler Gerald .93, two .87s.

OSU 2017: Shawn Meyers .99, Wyatt Davis .99, Jake M .97.

That's 8 OL that average .937 over two years.

Bama 2016: Jonah Williams .98, Charles Baldwin .95, Deonte Brown .93, Chris Owens .92.

Bama 2017: Alex Leatherwood .98, Elliot Baker .93, and they're at least adding a 5-star center who's not yet committed.

That's 6 OL over 2 years that average .946 (did not count 5-star center about to join them)

ND 2016: Tommy Kraemer .98, Liam .96, Parker .88

ND 2017: Lugg .92, Gibbons .88, Hainsey .96.

That's 6 OL over 2 years that average .93.

True freshman Jonah Williams is listed as the starting RT for Bama right now, He would have had ZERO chance of starting at ND. Bama stacks OG's better than anyone in the country, their OT recruiting is good, but not on par with ND's. I did a Comp rating breakdown of the usual suspects last year and ND had the highest avg. score.

and I believe #1 OC Cesar Ruiz is strongly leaning towards Michigan. He's the Jersey boy at IMG

Scout: 5-star OT puts ND on short list

BEAVERTON, Ore. - Harry Hiestand landed another piece on the offensive line on Sunday when Robert Hainsey committed. But there’s still more talent to be had and five-star offensive tackle Trey Smith put the Irish on his short list.

BEAVERTON, Ore. - Trey Smith used The Opening Finals as a two-fold opportunity.

First and foremost the five-star offensive tackle from Jackson, Tenn., saw it as an opportunity to back up previous outings. He punched a second straight invitation to The Opening Finals with a dominant performance at the Chicagoland regional.

Smith also wanted to learn more about himself while competing against top prospects across the board. It was his second straight trip to The Opening Finals.

“I've learned that I have the dog mentality in myself,” Smith said. “In the run game drill, I actually pancaked a couple kids I didn’t really expect.

The main thing is I just need to work on my patience, inside hands. I need to keep my hands in a little closer.

“I got a little sloppy here (Sunday). I’m not really sure why, but that’s my fault. I just need to stay patient and not be so aggressive. I don’t need to lunge at people.”

Smith also used the platform of ESPNU’s broadcast of the 7-on-7 tournament to reveal the latest in his recruitment by releasing a top six.

Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Ole Miss and Tennessee remaining standing. Smith had offers from dozens of others — Oklahoma, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Miami, USC and Stanford, among others.

But after a series of visits and background research, six made their way toward the top of Smith’s list for some specific reasons.

“Definitely the opportunities after football that the schools have,” Smith said. “Relationship with the coaches, the comfort we felt there. Then just the program success, the success they’ve had the last couple years.”

Notre Dame offensive line coach Harry Hiestand is one of the coaches with which Smith communicates regularly. Smith has taken note of recent success by Hiestand at developing NFL-caliber offensive linemen.

Zack Martin and Ronnie Stanley have both gone in the first round of the NFL Draft in recent years. Chris Watt and Nick Martin were both early round picks too.

“I think he’s one of the better o-line coaches in the country,” Smith said.

“He’s a real guy. He doesn’t really BS. He doesn’t really fake anything.

He’s just been a great coach. He’s produced great players like Zack Martin in the league. There’s no doubt he’ll continue that greatness.”

Some things about the Irish have stuck with Smith since his visit as well. He made the trek to campus in April.

“Just the tradition value and stuff there,” Smith said. “Not only that, the academic resources they have there and how you can better yourself as a person after football.”

Now as Smith moves forward with his top six, it appears the next move is to make more visits. Tennessee is likely up next.

Smith envisions a winter decision.

“I’ll be good,” Smith said. “I’m probably gonna do it mid-December.”

Per Wiltfong he thought Ole Miss was the leader but after Tunsil they seem to be slipping. He thinks Clemson leads here and UTjr is very much in this as well. ND is the sleeper

per ESPN “Another school came close, but there was a clear No. 1,” he said. “It was quite shocking because that was one of my top schools, so it was interesting.

maybe he's talking about ND or Ole Miss

Can you think of any set of athletic and academic metrics that could be applied that ND would not come out on top for an OT with those schools?

I am not quite understanding what you mean here bro

He said him and his father made a list of different qualities of each school and put it on a spread sheet. That's how he said they came up with his Top 6.

Must've been a matrix of Academics, Coaching, NFL history, Short Term Assets Offered, Long Term Assets Offered, Tutor Quality, Facilities, Overall Feel, ...

Spent the weekend at Tennessee bonding with players and coaches. He spends more time in Knoxville than Tillery did at LSU.

If he doesn't pick ND, which doesn't seem likely, I hope he goes to Tennessee.

Sounds like we're a lock. Especially if he sleeps in a VOLS t-shirt.

Scout: What's next for No. 4 OT Trey Smith? He cut his list to six last month; now what?

This builds my confidence that we're still in it for Smith. He said ND is "absolutely" in it. He likes ND because of Heistand, the guys (current players) and the tradition which is "like no other." He didn't mention academics but he sounds intrigued by ND and seems like a good kid. He also seems very intrigued by all the other schools. I really have no hunch on where he goes. I really hope it isn't going to be OSU. That would be disheartening. I REALLY hope we get him or Sarrel. I can't imagine we'd get both.

Well, crap. Every year there is inevitably a kid who I really, really want to go to ND because he's a perfect fit, but it just isn't going to happen.

I thought I was going to avoid that this year, but WOW would this kid be a perfect fit.

I have a really, really hard time seeing him not going to UTjr. If not it will be Clemson
