I'm staying in a hotel and ordered room service. They charge a 15% gratuity for in-room delivery. Fine. Then on the bill there's a line for a tip. Am I expected to tip above the 15%? I don't mind generous tipping, just wondering if it's required.

LOL, at least he's honest. I think it should come down to what is fair, what each person can afford, and the quality of service.

exactly I have no problem tipping 20 dollars on a 40 dollar tab if the service is good . But so help me god I wont think twice about leaving 50 cents on the table if the sevice is shitty

my dad use to always start out with 10 x $1.00 bills, then as the service went down hill, he'd take away a dollar at a time, until the end of the meal. Atleast the waiter/waitress knew where they stood.

Fun post!

Let's take it in another direction. How about a 'made-to-order' fast food restaurant (i.e.-Pizza Hut) that includes a tip line on the receipt when you pay with a credit card when you pick up a carryout order?

I don't want to 'tip' my hand here, but if I'm picking up my food at a window, I am not compelled to leave a gratuity.

Is this cheap?

Zero. I don't tip on any take out orders (unless I get to sit in the car -- like curbside take-out at Outback). For Outback type places, I tip 5-10%.

If the service is reallhy good, I'll tip around 10% in a tip jar at a coffee or mom&pop sandwich place. Or, at the coffee place I frequent, a dollar on occasion for cumulative service (hey, I just made up a term). Mos fast food places, I feel no need to tip the jar.

No tip should be automatic. You earn it, then you get paid well by me for your service and I feel good about it. But, bad service gets almost nothing and even then, I feel really good about it because I sent a message to the server that he was awful.

Yeah, the real crappy service will get my loose change from my tab. Nothing says you really sucked like a $0.47 tip.

Think I've done that a handful of times in my life, but not usually somewhere I might eat again. I have seen the movie 'Waiting.'
