He landed Iowa and BC offers this week while competing in the wrestling state tourney.

Since we have a few wrestling guys here like Golden Dome and Pumpdog...

I Checked into his wrestling info... Lost a 1-0 decision in the Semi-State (Indiana for Sweet Sixteen) final at 195. Stewart was undefeated going into the tourney and ranked #2 in Indiana. He heads to state 38-1. What stands out to me is he didn't wrestle last year. Don't know if it was due to injury or he was concentrating on football.

Wish I could go to Banker's Life this Saturday for the finals.

Lost to Tristen Tonte from Warren by fall in the second period. Tonte is the coaches son. Long time Perry Meridian coach before moving over to WC a couple of years ago. Stewart has a good draw to open state. Going against a kid from South Spencer. He wouldn't see Tonte again unless the meet in the finals.

State Finals is an experience. Bankers Life is packed. Got the opportunity to walk in the introductions with my youngest son twice.

OK... IHSAA's site said it was a 1-0 Dec.

BTW, watch out for that Mater Dei Soph Wilderman... one of my kin folk.

You're right it was 1-0. I had him mixed up.

Mater Dei used to have one of the best HS wrestling programs in the country under Goebel until he retired. The JV squad was as impressive.

In 29 years, Goebel coached the Wildcats to an amazing 533-14-2 dual-meet record with 12 state titles including 9 in a row. One consecutive victory streak reached 135 matches, another 117. His incredible .974 winning percentage is a national record. The JV team set a mind-boggling 450-0 record in 27 years. The streak ended the year after he retired.

My best friend from college was a MD wrestler. You keep seeing the same names roll through that program: Wilderman, Schiff, Goebel, Weinzapfel, Maurer. One of the great "dynasties" in IHSAA athletics!

I used to work with Mike's wife back in the early 90's. I've had numerous family members run through his program and when I lived there, I spent a lot of time around MD wrestling and sports.. My entire family is from Evansville, I'm the only one born up north.

I'm going to watch the meet today and tomorrow online through IHSAA.org & TrackWrestling.com

Looking forward to 195 as mentioned, the SIX undefeated region wrestlers, 182 with Rypel and Davison, 285 with Streck and the national showdown at 132 with Red and Lee from MD. Red can join Alex Tsirtis as the only 4 time undefeated champ with 200+ wins.

Wish I was there to see Red have the opportunity to pull that off.

Alex Tsirtis was as good a technical wrestler that I've ever seen.

Alex Tsirtis was as good a technical wrestler that I've ever seen.

I saw him and Angel Escobedo wrestle in '03 or '04. The most dominant thing I ever saw in Indiana high school sports and I played with or against 8 Mr. Basketballs and if you followed HS wrestling in the early 80's, my neighbors were the Lilovich brothers.

Angel was pretty damn good as well. Didn't follow wrestling until my oldest started around 92 his junior year. They wrestled at Purdue?

Angel wrestled at IU, and was a national champ.

That Griffith team was completely loaded. Four state champs or something like that. Tsirtsis was ridiculous and they were fun to watch.

The youngest Tsirtsis was a freak too. He's an all american at NW.

If I remember Angel's story correctly, he actually had the greatest HS career of all besides losing once to a nationally ranked guy from Chicago but he had like 175 pins in 220 matches(?) Plus he was a national champ at IU at least once, maybe twice.

Yes they went to Purdue. Dave won two state titles and Joey was runner up twice I think. Pretty sure they were both B1G champs at least once. They were multi time AAU (or whatever the Babe Ruth equivalent was for wrestling at the time ) national champs before high school.

223 wins with 156 pins in HS. The pins are a state record. I think he was a few wins shy of Alex. He had a more successful collegiate career than Alex. Those guys were the same age as my youngest boy. There were a lot of great IN HS wrestlers their junior and senior years.

I don't know much about Indiana wrestling, but I do know a bit about Iowa, and Ohio.

Pound for pound I think Dan Gable was the best wrestler I saw.

The best high school match I ever saw was the finals of the CIT - Bob Golic versus Tom Cousineau, one to nothing in overtime.

Golic went on to beat Harold Smith in the state finals, who coincidently beat my high schools guy in the finals, Junior year.

I guess the state final was one for the ages, too.

But I have never seen a weight class like that since. There were twelve legitimate potential champions that year.

Just posted because ND has had good luck with wrestlers in the past, and these guys were dominant athletes! There were three college All-American football players in the group, and Smith was a champion at Kentucky as I remember.

Yes they had 4: Both Escobedos, Tsirtsis, and Andrae Hernandez. That same year Portage had Darren Elkins, who is now an accomplished UFC fighter.

*Im heading to the finals tomorrow to root on Vega's boys and other Region guys. There were some big upsets tonight I see.

Nowhere else to put it: Red vs Lee tonight was AMAZING. #1 vs #5 nationally, and it didn't disappoint, other than it should have been 4-4 at the end of regulation.

Coach Goebel said during the broadcast that Lee was #2. So much talent on display today. Hughes from Lowell, the other Lee from Mater Dei, Rypel from Cathedral, Kovach (sp) & Streck from Merrillville and my favorite mach of the day was Tonte getting beat by the kid from LC at 195.

I had to step out when Stewart won 3rd.

I watched the match he lost to the kid from LC. Kid from LC was just quicker and a little better technical wrestler.

Don't like to bash on kids, but don't mind Tonte losing because of his dad. Let's just say he's a major douche.

Speaking of Dan Gable, he called me once totally unexpected. What an amazing guy.

Watch Stewart and Tucky combine for 40 tackles in 2019 at ND.

God forbid either player makes a single tackle against ND, the whole ND staff will come under fire for not identifying talent.

So now that Brian Polian is back as the ST guru, why not give him another Mike Anello but this time, one that hits like a Mike Stonebreaker? Plus I think Nicco proved you can be their size / speed and contribute. I know, I know... we're short on scholarships.

The most impressive thing about Ben Stewart is somehow he raised his GPA from a 4.26 as a Soph to a 4.28 as a Sr. Well done sir!

It's been fun keeping an eye on him in HS. I wish nothing but the best for him.
