I didn't think they were going to offer. I thought it would have come at Junior Day.

This is good news. Need some ready for primetime LB's with size in '17 to make up for '16's less than climactic finish.

Here's a freebie from last summer by Matt Freeman @ ISD:

Good at keeping his shoulders square, but his ratings are lower because you see more hesitation and less "go".

Not very deep into his HL but 9 of the first 10 he stops the ball carrier at or behind the line of scrimmage. Must be that his size/range make up for whatever hesitation is taking place.

Agreed, just watched him back to back with Malik Robinson. Malik Robinson sees hole, runs through hole, tackles. (Granted he must be invisible in real life because I never seen someone get in the backfield more unblocked ever. Does Georgia produce everything BUT offensive lineman?) The problem is 6-0, 210lb LB's are a dime a dozen. ND needs some 6-2+, 230+ guys from the get go... who can play of course.

Why can't they all be like Jaylon...

Phillips is stiff, but I dont think that really hurts him in the scheme Notre Dame runs at this present time. He can drop the bad weight he has now and he will be an even better athlete. Def fits what Notre Dame needs in terms of the Mike position.

A duo of Jacob Phillips and Ellis Brooks would be a great start to the class. Both seem to really like contact

I'd hate to say no to one of them but I wouldn't take both commitments before David Adams had his chance to take in everything and make a decision or at least provide the staff with some feedback.

Was about to post that I like this early group of LB's. Add in Werner, Simmons, etc. there is a lot to like there.

Yea, I'm going to be all about this for the foreseeable future. If you (ND staff) think they are worthy of a scholarship, then bring them in and sign them up. No more wait and see with the expectation that we'll sign better.

I'd tell all of them we are only taking 1 commit from an ILB at this time. This gives Adams who is atop their realistic ILB board a chance to digest ND at his visit. On say March 15th open it back up... first come first served.

I don't think the Irish want 3 ILB prospects do they? Also I'm assuming McBride and Hines aren't real players.

Scout: really good visit and liked the LB group a lot. ND is high on his list. No rush for decision

Scout: Jacob Phillips has eye-opening experience

Three-star linebacker Jacob Phillips doesn’t have a list of favorites, but Notre Dame separated from the pack during Junior Day last weekend.

Three-star linebacker Jacob Phillips made his first visit to Notre Dame last weekend for Junior Day and he left South Bend with a positive impression of the school and its football program.

“I had a really good visit,” said Phillips, a 6-foot-3, 230-pounder from Hendersonville, Tenn. “I was very impressed. Everything was very real and very eye-opening. The campus was a lot different, the whole feel for it. It's a very prestigious university. It's different but I liked it.”

According to Phillips, one of the most unique aspects of what Notre Dame offers is the ability to play any of the linebacker positions.

“It was eye-opening just talking to the coaches,” he said. “There aren't many schools that are running a 4-3 that are recruiting me. They run a 4-3 and they think that I can play all three linebacker positions. I could definitely see the field faster if I can play all three of them. I like that. I just want to make an impact for the team.”

Phillips knew a few details about the Irish football program before the visit but he learned a lot more about how he would fit into the defense and Notre Dame football family.

“The coaches told you exactly how it is there and exactly what they want and why they want me and the things they think I can do,” he said. “All of them are up front about everything. I feel like watching them coach during practice and film, I feel like I'll be comfortable being coached by them. I know that they have a lot of experience making linebackers great with the Butkus Award winner I know they had last year. I want to be great so being coached by them I feel that I could have similar success.”

The Irish fortified their position on Phillips’ short list and later this summer they’ll have a better idea if they’re among the favorites to land him. Other offers on the table include Auburn, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas A&M.

“Right now I'm just very blessed and humbled to be going through this experience of the recruiting process,” Phillips said. “I don't have a for sure favorite but I definitely have some schools that I'm highly interested in, ones that have broken away from the pack and Notre Dame is definitely one of them.”

Phillips will visit Oklahoma on Tuesday and he hopes to see a few more schools this spring.

So, after this weekend's results, is this guy still a get?

Could be the guy Denbrock was hinting at in his tweet?

Or Beach the Whisky tackle?

And does the staff take anyone less than Superman as their fourth linebacker commit, with ten or eleven months to signing day? I am thinking maybe if he shuts down his recruiting, learns the secret handshake, and the Irish are committed to taking five LB's this coming year.

That's the key. If they learn that, it's all over.

"They have told me that I’m still a priority and I'm definitely still a high interest [prospect] for them," Phillips said. "[Coach Elston] was thinking about three or four linebackers and now with three committed, I could be the fourth."

"Notre Dame is definitely a school that's in the mix," he added. "Coach Elston actually said that he's coming down to my school soon. I have a good relationship with him and I also talk with [head coach Brian Kelly] sometimes. So they are definitely in the mix and a school that will be in it."

He is? I haven't seen his tape, but 3 star with OK offers?

for what we need at inside linebacker he is....elite may have been a tad bit much BUT extremely good......and the coaches obviously feel that he is a big time backer or we wouldn't be pursuing him w/ what we already have in the fold...

Well when our only requirement of a MLB is that you make sure the 4 DL in front of you don't line up on top of one another in a pyramid, I suppose elite is easy to achieve.
