I think you guys are nuts. You're basically asking if you'd rather have Jaylon for 1 more year, or Jaylon for the next 3-4 years, granted he'd gradually get better. This guy is an elite recruit and talent and runs like a GD deer.

Koon, I think I tend to agree with you more than some of the others, but you're high on this one. Our goal is to win national championships, not recruiting championships. Jaylon is a rare breed that would be a HUGE piece of the competing for a national championship next year. The old saying about a bird in hand doesn't even apply to this situation..the bird in hand would be the best college player in america next year, Fournette, Henry or anybody else be damned.

Jaylon was an unreal prospect coming out of high school, but look at his development just from last year to this year...it was astounding...now bring him back again next year?? Sheesh lord have mercy. There is no guarantee that any high school prospect, no matter how good they are at 18 yrs old is going to turn into the caliber of talent that Jaylon is...and even if it happened, it is a gradual process, so you would be trading the best college LB in years for minimum 2 years of development from Caleb, and in the unlikely event that he reached Jaylon's level, you would still only have him at that level for 1 year before he went pro (nobody is getting to where Jaylon is by the Soph year). so basically what are you gaining?

Give me the player who can be a force in bringing home the price next year. That being said, I love Kelly as a prospect and would be ecstatic if he signed Irish. This is not intended as a slight to him, more about how good #9 is.

I'm fine with you guys disagreeing with me and I do see your points. Obviously Kelly wouldn't be as good as Jaylon next year, or likely even the year after that. But when talking about a player who's going to be in the top 10 of the LB group nationwide, and having him for 2-3 years perform at that level, I'd take over having even the best LB for 1 year.

The problem with this thinking is there is no guarantee this happens.

Exactly, the odds that Smith is the best LB in the country next year is substantially better than Kelly being a top 10 LB in the country for 2-3 years (while at ND) its insane. One already is and one isn't even close.

I think it's funny that you guys think it's an absurd position to take. We've had discussions like this before about Michael Floyd and whoever was the big WR then (Agholor?), usually more people on each side. Coach D at BGI says you take the guy who can give you 3-4 years if they're elite over the 1 year guy every time.

Other players, yeah you might be able to have this discussion. The thing is Jaylon Smith is a generational talent. A lot of scouts are saying he's the best LB prospect since Patrick Willis, so this isn't just some guy. He would make next years team a whole hell of a lot better.

But what if Caleb Kelly is the next Joe Schmidt?

Pretty sure he was referring to borderline 5th year guys, not Floyd and Teo types.

Time to play devil's advocate for a second- would you rather Jaylon for one more year or Caleb's commitment?

Caleb's in a heart beat. 3-4 years vs. 1.

The value of a Bird in the Hand has skyrocketed. Koon's exchange rate is trading above 4 In the Bushes.

Just taking into account the production on the field it'd be Jaylon as if he came back that'd go a long way in us getting the playoff and taking home the whole thing next season. However, taking into account other things like Jaylon's best interests, I'd say Kelly as Jaylon should probably go to the NFL, though I'll miss watching him on Sundays.

The voice of reason as always. You are sooo predictable (and appreciated ;-) ). I'm with you on what's best for Jaylon but I'd like to look past his checkbook and get selfish for a moment. '16's been the year I've circled on the calendar for that NC run. It can still be that even if he's not included on the roster but in the words of the great 21st Century American philosopher Matthew McConaughey..."It'd be a lot cooler if you did".

Maybe I'm delusional, but I still think there's a decent chance (let's say one in three) that Jaylon comes back. He's never really struck me as a NFL/football-first guy. You only get to be the best player in college football, senior captain of a playoff contender, once in your life. And the money will still be there next year. We'll see.
As to the other question, it's simple: You take both. Because you can.

Have you not seen who plays and who doesn't? You have not gotten the point after all the bemoaning about Cam getting carries over Bryant and Farley playing over everyone else.... Even if Kelly comes here, he is not seeing the field most likely but sparingly if at all his first year. Kelly will play underclassmen only at great need. I am not saying you have an absurd Position but there are not four linebackers on the team that can replace Jaylons production next year if he was to come back.

Koon, it's not crazy to think this way when related to team building. Baseball GM's constantly trade guy's in their prime for 3-4 probably's. It's how World Series are won. Obviously, you can't do it in college football but as a hypothetical it has proof or efficacy in other sports.

I'll take one year of Jaylon over 4 years of Steven Filer, which could be possible. We don't know if Kelly is going to be Jaylon Smith, Te'O of Steven Filer.

Per Loy, Kelly text him "This place is nuts!"

His host is Asmar Bilal and Jaylon will be around him a lot.

I've had this conversation with CoachD, and he definitely was talking about 5th year guys like, like a Farley or Amir or someone...absolutely not talking about someone like Jaylon Smith.

You ARE delusional! Hahaha...seriously though, he's telling people on the team that he's gone. 33% chance that he coming back? I wish, but he's lonnnnnnggg gone. I had a friend on the field after the Wake game, hanging out with all the families and players, and it's like a foregone conclusion that Jaylon played his last home game at ND.

Thanks LA...I think we needed a little dose of reality here.

Anyone in Jaylon's position would do the same thing. You can always come back and get your degree like most ND players do.
