Honestly I think he is a corner also. Either way he can be a swing player for ND.

I don't care what he plays, just get him on campus. The kid is athletic and knows how to make plays.

VHSL playoffs start this week. Bird is strong again and if they make it to the State 5A 'ship, I may take a trip to Charlottesville to rekindle a great ND victory memory and catch Elliot in action.

on today's power hour the question was... Who is the best defensive player committed in this years class. Mike answered that the staff by far feel Jalen Elliott. He then said he could come in and play corner or safety right away...WOW! that one is a surprise to me.

go to around 49 minute mark: Irish Sports Daily Power Hour | A weekly podcast covering Notre Dame sports

wow. I thought he had great potential at FS or CB but didn't think the staff thought THAT highly of him. He has all the tools to be a big time player

Wow him and Julian getting that 4th star

That should help the rivals rankings whatever that's worth

I'm surprised, given his lack of defensive film, but happy, he more than deserves it.

Elliott is a big-time playmaker that can fly around the secondary and be an effective run defender. The Notre Dame commit quickly reacts to the play and takes good angles to the ball. Elliott has a knack for making big plays in big moments on offense, defense or special teams. - Friedman - See more at: https://smu.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1834941#sthash.ufahKdNh.dpuf

Please be our Honey Badger, we need someone who forces TOs or makes big defensive plays.

shaun crawford is he, when healthy

I'll keep my fingers crossed but so far he has eggs on his stat sheet. I need to see him break a few eggs before I don him the scramblemaster**.

**scramblemaster = big time player - do not take if unhealthy, may cause side effects, symptoms may include nausea, appendicitis, laryngitis, loss of movement control akin to an ether binge, etc, etc.

Couldn't the same then be said about Jalen as he's never even been on the practice field?

Oh yes, I wasn't donning Jalen as anything. I'm just begging to the football gods to give us at least one that can be healthy and make plays. We need a little swag in this defense.

He was named all region and was the defensive MVP of the VA State All-star game last weekend, per twitter and Scout

Does anyone know who on our staff is responsible for evaluating high school prospects? Is it the assistant coaches themselves or is that what some of our analysts are doing? Between guys like Martini, Tranquill and Fuller, I've been incredibly impressed over the last few years with our staff's ability to see past the recruiting rankings to find talent, and it looks like we may get a few more criminally undervalued guys this year in Elliott, Pride, Jamir Jones and Love.

I watched a bunch of our commits highlights since the season is over a lot of them have now formed one senior highlight film versus having to watch each game individually. Anyways, Jalen is such a tremendous athlete. His tape is really fun to watch and I'm excited to get this kid in Blue and Gold. Very underrated prospect.

Scout: Jalen Elliott shines in all-star game

Irish commitment Jalen Elliott picked up another honor last weekend as the defensive back shined in the secondary while working against Virginia’s top prospects.

Although he’s ranked by Scout.com as a three-star wide receiver, Notre Dame commitment Jalen Elliott might be better known as a shutdown defensive back.

The 6-foot, 185-pound cornerback/safety prospect broke up six passes and recorded four tackles on his way to being named the East defensive MVP at the Virginia High School Coaches Association all-star game at Liberty University on Sunday.

“It feels good to know that I can play with some of the best in the country,” said Elliott, who played wide receiver and safety in the game. “But, the work doesn’t stop.”

Elliott, who committed to Notre Dame in June, also caught one pass for 17 yards in a losing effort for the East. That versatility is what attracted the Irish in the first place, with Notre Dame planning to employ Elliott at safety or cornerback in South Bend.

Irish defensive backs coach Todd Lyght made an in-home visit with Elliott earlier this month and head coach Brian Kelly is expected to hit Virginia in January.

“Coach Lyght just said how much they really wanted me and we talked a lot about other stuff than football,” Elliott said. “We talked about his experiences in college and the NFL, stuff like that.”

Elliott next plans to visit South Bend for the Blue-Gold Game on April 16. He expects to reconnect with many of his future teammates during that weekend. He’ll even see some of his competition from within his class as safeties Devin Studstill and Spencer Perry will enroll early.

Notre Dame’s next freshman class has already developed a strong bond.

“We have a group message so we stay in touch pretty much every day,” Elliott said. “We just talk about different things. We’re getting pretty close. It’s a good group.”

Elliott is also looking forward to the Fiesta Bowl, where Notre Dame will play Ohio State.

“I can’t wait to see it,” Elliott said. “I’ll probably have a little bowl party at the house.”

So damn excited about this kid, never wavered a little bit and has embraced being a ND commit. He's my favorite DB commit by far

A previous tweet about the visit I had to share (on mobile and can't embed):

#NotreDame HC Brian Kelly will be visiting DB commit Jalen Elliott soon. Source: "In a few minutes. Frying chicken as we speak."

Steve Wiltfong was on WSBT radio last night and was asked to pick one of our commits who he thinks is a bit under the radar that could end up being a big part of the program. Wiltfong responded that for him it is a very easy choice going with Jalen Elliott. He believes all of the services have him underrated and he wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being one of the top 2 or 3 guys in this class by the time these kids graduate.
