Just lost to Monmouth by 2. Monmouth players blowing by us in the 2nd half. Only had Matt Ryan come off the bench in the 2nd half. No way we can play 6 players for the entire season. Don't know if we can make the tournament this year

Where is Pflueger? No big man ready to play either? It's early and they get a bounceback opportunity this weekend but very concerning... Might be a big waste of DJ's talent if he leaves early.

Monmouth beat UCLA in Westwood and lost to USC who just upset Wichita St. Is Monmouth legit? Too early to tell bad it does seem like a bad loss.

My concern is Bench usage- we really only played six deep this game. Which was apparent in the 2nd half when we were tired and the defense was suspect with defenders blowing right by anyone, even Vasturia. This team isn't talented enough to do that like last year, but just my opinion. If we're already worn down in the 4th game, it's going to be a long season

Nice win against an ostensibly better opponent than we faced last night...would be nice if we could hold a lead and make FTs, but whatever. Good to win.

Glad to see them rebound with that type of performance. Fix the free throws and improve the bench

I think with the talent he gets, he is a good coach. I dont think he is a good enough recruiter for Notre Dame.

The Men's Hoops and Football Team are very similar-----both defenses are not good at all.

Monmouth and Alabama-----enough said

BC 16 points and 30 seconds at the final kickoff with the lead at Stanford and we lose--enough said!

Still, the FT shooting...

Brey has turned teams around before, but we may have trouble escaping the non-conference slate without 4 or 5 losses now. Yikes.

Is Mike Brey the Mark Richt of Men's basketball?? Undone by his own success. He has the highest winning percentage in ND history (tournament era). His 10 tournament appearances trail Phelps 13 with 5 less years.

He did just reach the elite 8 last year so its hard to criticism him, but maybe he's done all he can here. Can't get complacent.

I don't know if he's getting complacent. It seems he only trusts 5 guys to play right now. 4 starters played 35 minutes or higher. Compare that to Alabama who played 7 guys with 20 minutes or higher and you just wear yourself out in this kind of tournament.
Why is he barely going 7 deep? Where's some of the vets like Geben or the captain Burgett. Where's Pflugger?
There's no way to sustain that kind of rotation for a 4 month 35 game season.

It's a similar story every year. He coaches like he can't lose his job and it shows. He had a great run last year which earned him another 2 seasons but expect more performances like this.

Brey says at one point that it's good to suck, because that's how we get better, or something.

Beat Illinois 84-79 tonight. Indiana should be the only toss up till ACC play beings. If they win the games they should and notch a win against very beatable IU, the they will emerge from pre conference play looking very good-- then again they shouldn't have loss to Monmouth and bama so don't count on it.

Still not spreading the minutes around, only 8 played today and only 7 players are getting more than 7 min per game. Don't know how Mike Brey thinks the team can keep going like this, an injury to anyone of those 7 would destroy the team.

Jackson has been killing it though, averaging 19 points while shooting over .500 is awesome. Lot of mocks pegging him at a top 15 pick.

Nice win. Nice to see Auguste make some FTs late.

The ACC drops the challenge again. Of course, the tourney record (last year it was 17-5 for the ACC and 12-7 for the Big 10) is more revealing about the conferences.

The bottom of the ACC is (barely) worse than the bottom of the Big 10, but there are more players at the top of the ACC than the Big 10.

The offense showed it can be electric just like last year. Some defensive lapses but we are very balanced with DJ, Steve, and Auguste providing offense and a much improved VJ Beachem.

I'd like to see Brey trust his bench a little bit more and specifically use a Pflueger type. Brey missed the boat on playing Vasturia and Beachem early on in 2013 so I would like to see some guys on the bench get some opportunities but I also am not in practice every day so I'm not really sure how far along these guys are.

This team is gonna have games where they just don't score, no one is able to drive and create their own chances like Grant and Connaughton last season. Relying too much on the 3 ball, as it seems most ND teams end up doing.

Brey has never used the bench. Why would he start now? I think this is a reason our defense is usually suspect. Keep people fresh and they play better D, it is an effort thing. If they know they need to save some gas in the tank because they are going to log 40 minutes every night... there are very few athletes that can give 100%, 100% of the time - even getting stronger as the game wears on. DJ is probably our only one.

Huh? DJ is great at driving to the hole and either getting a layup or getting fouled.

I was able to sit and watch the team for the first time last night. Couple of thoughts
1 - DJ is awesome, as expected. There were some times in this game that I would have preferred him to be more assertive offensively, specifically late in the 1st half.
2 - ZA looks to have expanded his moves in the low block and rebounds better. Good news.
3 - ZA and BC don't look fully in sync yet. Once that happens, I think the offense will really hum.
4 - SV has developed so very nicely. He is quite the player.
5 - VJ needs to step it up on defense....too passive at times.
6 - Illini.....wow.....I would not be happy if I was a fan. That second half performance against the zone was embarrassing.

All in all, I think this team will get much better as they continue to gel. Defense, bench scoring and consistency will be the determining factors this year. Very interested to see how this year goes in the ACC.
