I'm fascinated by this only in the sense of what the outcome will be. The players kind of put themselves in a bind. They cannot back down from the stance they took. What happens if this drags on for weeks?
As far as the University is concerned, I am not well versed in what has been going on and I am sure it is incredibly nuanced. I imagine there many points to the story that haven't been told. I have no idea if, and to what extent, the President should have, or more importantly could have, done things differently.
What I do know is whatever Missouri does now, will have some implications in the future. These students are trying to use their influence and that of the media to drive change. Regardless if this is warranted in this case, this is dangerous precedent. 18-22 year old's are not typically the group you think about when it comes to completely rational, well thought out decisions. Their lack of experience and emotional drive can lead to faulty conclusions, which is part of the college experience. But when you combine that attribute, with the desire to use numbers and media to drive change, at what point do you draw the line? What would happen if college students across the country tried this tactic with every thing they thought was wrong with their campus? It would be chaotic.
