Defensive coordinator is probably the lead candidate for the job. Would probably keep the DB coach.

I guess I hadn't looked into it. You think they go with Bud Foster? He's a very good DC but making him the head guy screams more mediocrity, at least to me. With that said, they probably don't have many options.

That's the problem. VT should be an attractive school for good coaches but the problem is there are too many options for those coaches this year.

Apparently the only thing keeping VT in this recruitment is the DB's coach, Torrian Gray. Per 247 if it wasn't for him he'd already have flipped and if he were to be fired, coaching change perhaps, then that probably locks it up for the good guys.

If he flips, does that end our pursuit of Hamlin or is Hamlin on the Betiku "take no matter what" level?

Huge VT fan in the office next to mine. He insists it will not be Bud. He claims Bud has lost his luster with the alums and the influential ones are lobbying for a new, fresh face. He thinks he may be asked to stay on as DC but that isn't a given. Obviously this guy claims to be pretty plugged in, but I don't know how accurate that is. TIFWIW!

I have no source or any pulse of that program but this seems like the way you would have to go. You need new blood to invigorate VT.

Question for those who follow recruiting a lot more than I:

What about this guy is making you guys so high on this guy? The offer list I see is pretty mediocre. I understand people think VT offer and it is "nuff said" but honestly, VT hasnt been good in quite a while and is really bad this year...including their defense. Im just not sure how much weight the VT offer for a DB holds anymore.

Is it that ND has struck out on the other DBs pretty much?

I think it's been mentioned back that our staff views him as one of the best cover corners in the class?

May be just wining and dining type of talk, IDK

That's true for them as a unit, but they are still world-class when it comes to eyeing individual talent in the secondary. This year is no different, despite their troubles. They have a freshman starting at safety that projected (and might still end up) at linebacker, and he was not an on-the-radar guy with a huge offer list. And yet, he's playing well.

They can spot the talent, but it appears that VT can no longer put it all together into a cohesive unit/team. But the offer still carries weight.

Well, gripe on VT all you want but the great DB coach [Torian Gray] is still there and so is Bud Foster. VTs DBacks aren't quite as good this year [but still pretty good] due to injuries. Remarkable how some folks hurl negatives without investigation. A VT offer means that their staff has vetted this guy personally several times in person.

I suggest taking a look at his film, because it's rather impressive.

Loy in with the CB as he believes the coaching change is the push ND needed to get Troy in the fold. His theory is that they look outside of the current staff for their new hire and probably don't keep a lot of the assistants on staff. With that said, he also stated that even if Gray stays on staff it doesn't necessarily rule out Troy either.

My sense from my ex-VT brother, who knows the staff so well he walks into their offices, is that Bud Foster likes being a DC but has not wanted to be a head coach and has turned down many offers over the years. That doesn't mean that a new head coach would not retain him of course. Foster is a rare defensive gem who is among the sharpest at making in-game adjustments in football.

As my brother would say while we were watching VT struggle a little at the beginnings of games, "Foster will figure it out." As far as I could tell, he always did. ... if he had any horses to work with that season anyway [often there were DT troubles at VT.]

I dream of this for ND.

Anna spoke to him. He was surprised to hear about Beamer. He wants to see what happens with coaches Foster and Gray. He was sounds pretty torn about choosing. He still thinks about how good the ND visit was and talks to Denson, Lyght and Kelly. Probably know month toward the end of the month.

Fwiw, his comments about how ND is recruiting makes me appreciate the ND staff more. No trash talk, ND isn't for everyone and you either get it or you don't. Pride gets it.

So Loy said that its going to come down to Pride or Hamlin and both have the greenlight. If/when one of them picks ND, it more than likely closes the door for the other.

To add, it does not sound like the staff is pressuring Pride at all. Decide when he's ready scenario.

they were talking about this on the podcast from isd....stating we won't ever pressure a kid to commit and then cited examples of how at psu it completely backfired on them

I would love either player.

I wonder how optimistic ND is about getting one of them.
