Not entirely sure this is a done deal. Stanford not having his major seemed like a big deal. I could see him re-thinking this as the season progresses or at least giving us an OV.

So here is a question, does Stanford thank Andrew Luck or Harbaugh for brining in Andrew Luck?

In regards to getting Long?

I think you thank Wayne Moses, Nate Nelson and AJ Christoff.

.

Sorry, I'm speaking in terms of the emergence of Stanford. Not many kids would label Stanford as a "dream offer" several year ago. Nothing against Stanford, just interesting how things have changed.

said he will "definitely" take official visits to Nebraska, Notre Dame and Michigan--247

"It's more of a case of going to see them because I haven't been to those places," Long said. "I'm 100-percent firm with Stanford."

Can't be 100% if your IE profile doesn't say "Stanford verbal."

Has scheduled an OV for the Navy game

Beat me to it.

The Irish have some great DB options on the board but they'll be hard pressed to find a better student athlete, from a quality academic / athletic program, that competes against other A+ programs. PLUS he's a real track guy that doesn't seem like he's thinking about competing in college.

Fast is good.

Hamlin and this guy would be at the top of my CB board. Throw in Studstill at safety and that's a wrap lol

Anyone know is he has received his official admission to Stanford?

As long as ND is a solid #2 here, there is always a chance.

Right now we have Redfield, M Williams, and a rehabbing Tranquil / Baratti. Keep getting top tier talent and figure it out later.

Totally agree! We definently need to take everyone we can, if for anything depth and to create good competition amongst the safeties.

"I'm looking forward to the experience of being at the game," said Long. "I'm also eager to get around the position coaches, as well as the guys in my position group. I also want to see how the coaches plan on using me. In addition, I would like to see the academic side of things in South Bend, as well as the campus life. It's a school I grew up hearing about, so to have the opportunity to be a part of something legendary like this, is surreal."

"Coach Denbrock has been really influential on me," said Long. "I love how energetic both him and coach VanGorder are. They also have a lot of experience on the staff from a defensive standpoint, so I know I'll be getting tips and coaching from the best. Coach Denbrock has been on me since they offered and even after I committed [to Stanford]."

"I feel I shouldn't leave these opportunities out there when they're just as good," said Long. "Considering I would've passed them up, I wouldn't know if they're a better fit or not. In addition, I'm still waiting to be admitted into Stanford. I'm on track, but I want to be prepared if things change, whether it be because of admissions or other reasons."

Definitely," said Long, when asked if he could realistically pick Notre Dame without his parents ever visiting South Bend. "My mom's never been with me on any of my trips. My brother went with me to Washington, but that's about it. She hasn't been to Stanford."

"I'm pretty good friends with [wide receiver] C.J. Sanders, I played against him last year," said Long. "[Running back commit] Tony Jones Jr. and I talked Notre Dame while I was with him at The Opening. C.J's work ethic is crazy. He's a good guy, too."

WILL BE AT UM NEXT WEEK
"Schools like Duke, Michigan, and Ohio State," said Long, when asked what other schools are in it. "I also have a really close relationship with the staff at Washington and I'm well-versed on that program as well. I've been there the most out of any school."

FWIW, the Scout article basically says the same thing. He is trying to cover all his bases if something were to happen with Stanford admissions. An interesting note is that ND is looking at him as an ATH and Stanford is as well. However, he thinks Stanford wants him more at WR, his preference is to play D.

Notre Dame is primarily looking at Long as a DB, while Stanford sees him more as a WR/returner. Long prefers defense but is open to either, via ISD.

Anyone with an update? Big head

Scout says he had a great time on his visit and it seems like of he didn't get into Stanford, ND would be the choice. As usual though, Jake Brown and co. didn't make any real predictions, just said that he really enjoyed his trip.

The ISD update is even more encouraging. Not so much a backup plan at this point. He was actually quoted that he liked certain things about ND more than Stanford and he also made a big deal about the football environment and academic combination being the best.

Steve Hare and tj commented they think he will be admitted to Stanford and most likely go there. ND did very well this weekend though.

Greg Biggins comment: "this was the first time talking to him that I got the sense he's no longer a lock for Stanford, even if he's cleared through their admissions"

SCOUT: Stanford commit David Long Recaps Weekend Visit To Notre Dame

Los Angeles (Calif.) Loyola defensive back David Long took an official visit to Notre Dame over the weekend and it sounds like the Irish gave him a lot to think about.

While he waits to be approved by Stanford's always tough admissions process, Loyola athlete David Long decided to take a few offiical visits.

Long checked out Notre Dame over the weeknd and the Irish made a huge impression.

"It was a great trip, I liked it a lot," Long said. "The highlight for me was the fan support and the game atmosphere. Notre Dame is the only school in the country where you can get a first class education matched with a football heavy environment. I know you can argue multiple schools in that arguement but at Notre Dame, it's just a different approach from anything else I've seen.

"My host was C.J. Sanders and I clicked really well with all the players. I already knew a handful of guys like Equanimeous St. Brown and C.J and surprisingly, I met some guys there who attended Loyola H.S. The Loyola to Notre Dame pipeline is pretty strong. I was with Shaun Crawford a lot as well and he's a great guy and very knowledgable about the game, very smart guy."

Long has a strong relationship with the Irish coaching staff as well and that was only enhanced this weekend.

"I spent a great deal of time with the coaches going over my role and how they see me fitting in," Long said. "They're looking to build up the secondary and I really like what they have to offer. The DC, Brian VanGorder is good friends with my head coach Marvin Sanders so I'm already learning all the stuff they're teaching right now.

"Therefore, I would be able to hit the ground running when I got to fall camp. It would be a smooth transition for sure. Depth chart wise, I'm willing to compete no matter where I go but Shaun told me with him at nickel, the corner spots are up for grabs. It's a great situation and I have a lot of respect and trust with the staff, they have been very clear how they want to use me and that's big for me."

Long has submitted his application to Stanford but it no longer sounds like it's a done deal that he'll automatically re-affirm his pledge to the Cardinal.

"I had a great trip, Notre Dame really gave me a lot to think about," Long said. "Even if I'm cleared, I'm still going to give Notre Dame a hard look, like I said, the coaches have been very clear to me from the beginning how I would fit and that means a lot.

"This coming weekend I'll be at Michigan and then I still plan to visit Duke and Washington after my season. I'll take my last visit to Stanford for their big recruiting weekend in January and I'm still looking at UCLA locally as well."

“I think the campus was great,” said Long. “Loyola is pretty much Notre Dame, in a nutshell, without girls. I felt I would fit in perfectly fine. I even feel maybe I would fit in even a little better than elsewhere. The gap between the students and the football players isn't as big as other places. Plus, the way they set everything up, you're allowed to network and meet a lot of people on campus.”

“My time with coach Lyght was amazing,” said Long. “It's different being with a guy who not only knows football, but has played it with success. He gave me a lot of life talks and shared different perspectives on why Notre Dame is the best fit. We also broke down some film and went through some techniques and schemes they use at Notre Dame. Coach VanGorder was great as well. He reminds me a lot of my coach. It's hard, tough coaching. While some aren't fit for it, it actually gets you prepared.

“The coaches really emphasized how they felt each of us would fit in the locker room. They also stressed their need for a corner to add to the defense. Of course, I will have to compete, but there would be a decent opportunity to come in and play early on. That holds a lot of weight, especially at a prestigious school like Notre Dame.”
“Coach Kelly just kind of solidified the previous talks that I had with the coaches,” said Long. “He let me know how they'll always have a job opening for me at Notre Dame. Also, we talked about plans moving forward after my visit. He said that he plans to visit me after they play Stanford.”
“The team's performance went well,” said Long. “With an option offense you never really stop it, you just slow it down. Navy is a really disciplined team, so I think they played exceptionally well. Man, the atmosphere was absolutely nuts. 80,000 every week is something to look forward to.”
“Sargent was a great guy,” said Long. “I mean, I appreciate his approach of not building dependent students, but confident ones. He also stressed how a lot of my academic routines will be refined for the better. He seems like a great guy that's definitely in the players' best interest.”
“Notre Dame is in a great spot right now,” said Long. “I don't think that I would've given them a fair shake without this visit. However, considering I did, they're in great standing. I’m sure these quotes didn’t do the visit justice. It was nuts, to say the least.”
