Anyone who knows me or reads my stuff knows that I am not afraid to admit when I'm wrong. And Notre Dame running back CJ Prosise, a three-star safety out of high school, certainly didn't show me a Heisman candidate's potential as a prospect.
Don't get me wrong. Prosise showed good athleticism at the time and put up gaudy numbers against less-than-stellar competition. He was a dangerous return man, played some quarterback/running back as well as wide receiver and defensive back and was a two-time Prep League MVP. But the question remained -- what position would he excel at? He wasn't a natural on offense as, despite the numbers, he fought the ball at times and didn't have great body control. On defense, he showed good ball skills, but was a safety with a linebacker frame who wasn't the most physical tackler. He had some nice offers but few elite offers with Notre Dame being one of his best. Many coaches, college especially, questioned his ability to transition to college and be more than just a role player.
Yet, after a bit role in 2013 and an okay season last year, we're now looking at a guy with more rushing yards than Nick Chubb at Georgia, a better yards-per-carry average than Derrick Henry and more touchdowns than Ezekiel Elliott in his first year at the position? You can say you saw this coming and that you knew Prosise was a special athlete and great player if you want, but I certainly didn't see it coming at all. Which is what makes it all the more fun to watch. - See more at:
