Stannis says there are no defenses yet. He tells this to Theon in one of Reek's chapters. Basically he has the blizzard and a beacon fire at the top of the tower in the crofter's village. The lake was fished dry and there are holes all over it like Swiss cheese. The Manderly's are with the Frey's, who have an imbecile for a commander.
The Night Lamp theory basically says the fire will draw the Frey's over the frozen lake, where their heavy horse will break the ice, causing countless to drown, and those who flee will meet hostile Manderly forces. So he should win the Battle of Ice and live up to his "greatest commander in Westeros" title. The siege of Winterfell is virtually unknown except for the show.
That's it for the Night Lamp theory, but Stannis' forces could assume recovered garb to enter Winterfell, like in Braveheart, and open the gates to other forces. Then you have Lady Dustin, among others, inside who we really don't know much about. It's a very convoluted situation in Winterfell. Stannis could also try to lay siege to Winterfell and die like in the show. We don't really know much but it seems he will win the battle in the blizzard.
