Cage, Matuska, Tillery, Hayes, Bonner, Blankenship and Dew-Treadway, you're up!

**Forgot Elijah Taylor, Kelly said he'll likely be activated since he's already possibly the strongest DL on the team. Another key piece to help fill the void left by JJ.

Yeah, seems a certainty that lots of bodies will rotate to fill the void.

Did they ever say what the injury was? Obviously it was knee related, but was it MCL, ACL, other?

I would hope he takes a medical, but if not I wonder if he could come back by the end of the season? I tore my MCL in high school, and while I didn't have as much weight on my knee I was playing again by the end of the season. I imagine Jarron would have a much better rehab program and access to better staff than I had as well. I'm not saying he will come back, but it could happen.

Might as well play it safe coming off a Lisfranc and the MCL. He was already eligible to come back next year I thought.

I tore my MCL twice and was back at full strength after 2 months. The flip side is I was only 200 pounds and wasn't playing a contact sport.

I think the one thing I didn't consider is that the knee surgery may have been more invasive, I don't know. I've had two different back surgeries, and the first was much more invasive and a bigger bitch to recover from. The second was a small ass incision and was cake.

To go in rounds 1-3, JJ needed to have a monster year. If he comes back too early, he may not be at 100% which would affect his play and his draft stock.

He tweeted before that he thinks he won't be back for at least another 11 weeks. 11 weeks from now is Stanford.

He tore his ACL and is 315 pounds. Guys, don't get excited. I'll bet the house he doesn't play this year.

Only way I could see him returning is if he's set on the NFL and then doesn't mind using the year of eligibility by playing in the bowl game.

Actually, if I am not mistaken he tore his MCL. (Which is a whole world of hurt different from an ACL!)

I was surprised he was having surgery. Most of the time they aren't even surgically repaired, unless the medial meniscus is shattered, (crab meat). Not to be confused with Winston.

Here is what the normal process is for an MCL :

• Mild or grade 1 injuries usually get better in 1 to 3 weeks and may only need home treatment along with using crutches for a short time.
• Moderate or grade 2 injuries usually get better in about a month. You may need to wear a hinged knee brace and limit how much weight you put on your leg.
• Severe or grade 3 injuries may require wearing a hinged brace for a few months, and limiting weight on the leg for 4 to 6 weeks.

I tore my MCL twice and was back at full strength after 2 months. The flip side is I was only 200 pounds and wasn't playing a contact sport.

I don't think it has much to do with weight, but structure (structural integrity of the knee.)

That would be like if other tendons, ligaments, or cartilage was damaged. A bad MCL tear with no other damage is no worse than the recovery equivalent of sprained ankle. Someone that knows more step in, I was trying to simplify and present relative to a common injury.

Thanks Bogs. But how does requiring surgery factor into that?

I think that's an overstatement.

Maybe you can remember this : didn't Kelly talk about the injury right after it happened?

All I can assume is that they thought there was ancillary structural damage, which would have been a major focus of the surgery, and when they went in the knee was in a lot better shape than expected.

Remember they can go in with something smaller than a pencil led, get a better picture, and do precise robotic repair, quicker, and more importantly less invasively that ever before. Previous surgical methods added to the "damage" or the recovery time required.

I thought he was already eligible for a 5th year

He is even if he plays the latter of the '15 season. He's only played 2 seasons of his 4 in 3 years of his 5 year window.

'15 Knee Sugery, IF he takes a snap later in the year he burns his 3rd year of PT and the 4th year of his 5 year window
'14 Played in 11 games
'13 Played in 12 games
'12 DNP

I think that's an overstatement.

Generally, I don't, that is why I said it.

Individuals are different.

Of course all tears are different.

But here is what WebMD says about ankles :

"Even Grade III sprains, in which the ligament is completely torn, may heal naturally. In rare cases, you might need surgery. During the operation, the surgeon might remove bits of torn ligament, bone, and cartilage. The ligament may also be repaired (sutured together), or reconstructed (replaced with a biologic material). After surgery, you may need a cast for one to two months."

PS. : I did a little further checking, and with a bad ankle sprain the Achilles tendon can be torn. I believe a torn Achilles tendon is always worse than an MCL tear.

Can someone verify this? I missed it if true.

From SI:

"Notre Dame defensive tackle Jarron Jones is out for the 2015 season after injuring his MCL, reports Irish Illustrated.

According to the report, Jones hurt his right knee in practice after he "got rolled up." Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly told reporters Jones has a third-degree MCL injury.

Jones, a redshirt junior, was already making his way back from an injury from the end of last season. He suffered a Lisfranc injury against Louisville that kept him out of the last two games of 2014 and all of spring practice.

Last year, Jones started 11 games and recorded 40 tackles"

This isn't news(in my opinion), but he was on a local radio show and said he's coming back.
