I thought Max did a great job in run support in the bowl win. He of course was not perfect but he saved a lot of big runs with sure tackles.

That's what I'm afraid of. We have two great run stopping Safeties, but both are also subpar in coverage at this point.

I never in a hundred years would have thought Harrison Smith would get drafted in the first round, and I wouldn't have dreamed in a millenium that Zeke Motta would get drafted at all. Hopefully the coaches can work the same magic with Redfield and Shumate, because if they get it together, those two + Russell and Luke could be a legendary DB corps.

Excellent points. I remember Smith and Motta catching a lot of flak but really picking it up and playing at a high level at the end of their college careers. Hopefully Max will pick it up even earlier. He certainly has the tools.

Max was basically 100% responsible for 14 of LSU's points. I wonder what they were smoking when they put him on the all-bowl team

He had 14 Tkls and 10 solo. If you look at the stat sheet he had a nice game but if you watched the game I think you'd feel differently.

Other than the one bad beat, which was even somewhat understandable if not excusable, and was excellent in run support. I was mostly impressed. One of his better games all year IMO.

This and more of this. Harrison Smith struggled a ton and was one of my least favorite players. Then he broke out as an upperclassmen (heck even as a Senior), became a 1st round draft pick and is a stud now. Zeke Motta who no one would have guessed had a future in football succeeded under Kelly and got to the NFL. I have confidence in Max and Elijah breaking out this coming year.

Both of these guys played college football like college guys. Meaning they were not pros yet but anyone with an eye could see they had decathlete type skills. Smith even was a decathlete in high school. We on this board miss the point between college and pro skills vs actual play while in college. I for one was not surprised by either of these guys doing well at the next level. What happens at other places is they are already pros by the reason they are in school. I'm starting to realize many people don't get this-at the typical college 'pro' program they bring in guys who are mature/pro oriented/football only/ on campus to win a football game guys who are pretty much used up by the time they get to the NFL. What you see with Smith and Motta is exactly how they should progress. They are college guys going to college playing college football (trying to find out later if they can play in the NFL). The NFL has always had few a Notre Dame guys who blossomed late for just that reason-they were in college for college. It doesn't mean they cant win while in college like 2012 but in most cases at Notre Dame they peak in the NFL as far as football is concerned. Riddick and Gray are the same example. It may not even be too late for Clausen but he will surely get a great pension from just backing up. It comes down to why are you in college- to play in the NFL- or to prepare for life and maybe take a shot at pro ball if it presents itself. Notre Dame and Stanford are the only schools today that compete with the college NFL teams while doing it from a posture of college life.

I love the positive vibe you are sending here. Give the KID some credit, this was one of his better games of the season. I'm glad this effort came at the end of the season so maybe it will build some confidence going into the off season.

Let's talk about some good things these guys are doing instead of being critical about every little mistake they make. How many points did he save making his 14 tackles?

This. It's not like he made an error against a hack RB. It was Leonard Fournette, who by all accounts and purposes could end up being the next Adrian Peterson (at least in terms of play). No shame in that, Fournette is simply a beast that can make even the greatest defenders pay for their mistakes.

Wow, thats some hefty praise. If he lives up to that then this D could be really good.

he had quinn blanding 4th team..quite shocked...he has played very well vs what i have seen from redfield...maybe BK tipped him off that the light went on

As of now, I don't see this happening but I do expect quite a big jump from what we saw last year.

They must be serious about Jalen Ramsey at FSU playing CB because he was listed as a top 15 pick at FS this year.

With a healthy & experienced LB corp that goes 6 deep, a top 5 CB tandem in Luke and Russell, experienced nickles and Elijah Shumate who might have the biggest jump of any Irish player this year... Max IS set up for a huge statistical year. There are going to be a lot of bad passes trying to beat those corners over the top and that's how FS's make their money.

... if the D line gets ANY quick pressure, there are some teams in for a world of hurt in the passing game. As it stands, the D line will get their share of coverage sacks this year regardless. I would have to guess 3/4 of the schedule will be 2+ scores down in the second half this year and they will be forced to pass. When that happens even 'ok' pass rush teams are effective and force mistakes.

Only 14 more Saturdays till we find out...

I'm not a big Kool-Aid guy nor am I a sandbagging Debbie Downer like this board is full of. I've been spot on with the Irish's performance in the Kelly era except for last years final record where I had them at 10-3 and IMO if they have had just an average # of injuries on D or... everyone BUT Schmidt gets hurt they still make 10) That being said, I can't see them losing more than 2 games. In fact, 2 games will be disappointing and that's including if one of them is a playoff loss. MZ is going to be an all-time great.

The "bad" news is if Max does breakout like Steele (and I) think... He gone. And it would be well deserved and probably a good move on his part. Our Lady will be there when he wants to finish his degree.

The Pac-12 schools should be leading, but I think once he visits SB, that will put ND at or ahead of those two. It has that much of an effect and he clearly has peaked enough interest. I say yes, we get him, but what do I know?

I found it funny your name is crazybalki but when the guy quoted you on page 2 it shows up as NDsean 44

Back on topic Redfield should have a huge year. All the talent in the world

Our starting safety would just get up and leave? Where is he going to go?

It will be interesting to see how Max plays against Georgia Tech. If Luke and Russell have to play the run and leave the wide outs, that puts a lot of responsibility on the safeties. Plus he'll have to sagely know when to charge up and drop back. That is the game that scares me.

That game will keep BVG all summer

The draft. The staff has even told some recruits that if Redfield has the type of season they expect him to have the NFL is a possibility.

someone on Rivals ( i only go there for the premium info/board info) so i am not too familiar w/ names but someone reported that Elliot has been studying the triple option...i asked if there was an article related to this but no response...but they started a thread on it so i figured it was more than just throwing speculation out as it read like they read it somewhere

crazy if so...imagine halfway through a season you are BENCHED for a true freshman who was NOT a 4 or 5 * to preseason all american and eventually leaving early...time heals everything

I LOVE Max's potential but this is all because of the Notre Dame brand.

Probably a good idea that someone is looking into it now. We'll face plenty of Triple Option this year and we can't get to halftime and pull a 2010 Diaco.

Has anyone heard anything about a potential Redfield injury, wearing a soft cast and sling today.
