Scout: Irish to see new linebacker

Notre Dame plans to visit three-star linebacker Koby Quansah this week. Quansah now holds 21 offers and Irish interest has grown in recent weeks.

When Koby Quansah learned Notre Dame assistant coach Mike Elston was scheduled to visit him this week at Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford, Conn., he quickly sent the coach a link to his junior highlight film.

Elston’s response left Quansah hopeful for an Irish offer.

“The message he sent me sounded promising,” Quansah said. “He said he already saw it and that’s why he’s coming.”

Elston and assistant coach Scott Booker are expected to visit the 6-foot-1, 220-pound three-star linebacker on Tuesday.

“I think they’re just visiting the school,” Quansah said. “If they come after school I’ll just work out for them.”

Several other schools also have been in contact with Quansah, who now holds 21 offers. Arizona State, Boston College, Duke, Michigan, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Illinois are among those with an early bid to land Quansah’s signature next February.

Most schools are recruiting Quansah to play linebacker but a handful prefer him as a running back.

As a junior he rushed for 1,248 yards and 18 touchdowns on 120 carries. On defense he recorded 122 tackles, including 15 for a loss, 3 ½ sacks and forced two fumbles in eight games.

“I bring the key role of a leader to the defensive side of the ball, knowing where everyone has to be,” Quansah said. “I bring physicality and speed to the defense and I'm able to run downhill and make a big tackle but I’m capable to cover receivers and backs. I’m untouchable when I blitz and always make the tackle, whether it be a big hit or just a form tackle.”

Quansah has already visited Boston College, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina and Rutgers. He hopes to see several more programs this summer.

The visits could help him identify his favorite schools.

“I don’t really have any schools sticking out,” he said. “A lot are on the same level of interest.”

Scout.com ranks Quansah as the 41st best linebacker in the nation.

"It went well, Coach Elston told me he was impressed with the way I look, presented myself, and what he saw on film. He said he'll let me know if I have a scholarship after the coaches meet up on Tuesday next week," Quansah said.

While Elston didn't extend an offer, he did invite the linebacker to the Irish Invasion on June 19, and that's a trip that could happen.

"If I have the means to go I will, but that offer will certainly help push my mom and I to go for sure because we know that the interest is definitely there for sure," Quansah said.

Elston told him to call BVG this evening and an offer is expected at that time.

Maybe he's quicker than fast?

I believe this to be true. He does lack long speed but he has a good feet, balance and explosiveness. He just can't seem to really open it up but that's fine. As an MLB those traits above are more important than straighline speed.

Does anyone think it is a typo in his profile. If I ran a 4.9 I would not advertise it. Lots of profiles do not have 40 times.

I was not basing my opinion on those times. I've watched any tape that I could find from highlight tape to camp footage.

I have no doubt, lucky. I am just curious as a guy who did not do all that. 4.9 is pretty slow for a kid his size who is getting D1 offers. I thought it might be a misprint.

He rushed for 1200 yards (10 yards per carry)and 18 TDs on offense...i think it's off. I want him on our team.

Yea, I don't think he runs a 4.9.

Just watched his film for the first time. If he rue a 4.9 his competition must be really slow. He outran a bunch of guys. He is not a burner but he runs faster than 4.9. I like his film a lot -- especially on D. Very aggressive.

All these crystal ball predictions for someone that does not have an offer that is strange

No it's not. Every kid in Cali is 100% CB'd to SC at birth. It drops to 75% when you commit elsewhere and to 50% when you enroll at the other school.

All this forty yard dash speed conversation!

As opposed to talking about lateral movement and cutting ability, or first step - ten yard breaks, I would like to approach this differently.

With any recruit who seems capable, where speed, or lack thereof, seems to be the knock, it is surprisingly easy for coaches to evaluate, and determine whether the issue is a problem or not.

That is done by observing the interaction between this player in other players who are known quantities in camp, or competition settings.

I am excluding game film for this conversation, though with today's technology, stride, distance covered and kinesthetic measurements can be made with remarkable precision. I recently had a scientist friend who was working on a consulting project with a high school girls team, evaluating through tape which girls would be most likely to have knee problems; he was saving future knee surgeries through the application of some pretty hot science.

That notwithstanding, seeing a prospect with a potential issue, interacting with other more known prospects, is a good means of assessment for coach evaluators.

Jonathon Bonner obviously really benefitted from that, (but for different reasons), but the case in point of an athlete that plays much faster than his frontline speed indicates is Manti Te'o! Remember how shocked we were at his combine times? He was just under a 4.8! A step off from this kid?

But I have seen recently with growth at these kids ages, particularly kids with some body density, and size, times for sprints and distances can vary tremendously over a few months.
