Wow....That's quite a comparison - I'd definitely prefer that be the case but Bob Sanders ran a 4.35 while carrying 204 lbs on that little frame of his. He also had a 41.5 inch vertical. Bob Sanders wasn't all that when he got to Iowa, but what happened to Sanders rarely happens to anyone. Might want to temper those expectations, they'r enot very realistic.

I didn't say those were my expectations, just that it would be great. Nobody would have thought Sanders would have developed the way he did either, and this kid's definitely got the attitude and work ethic to put in the time and effort to make it happen. He may never run a legit 4.4, but he can be plenty effective in college and also in the NFL if he could run a legit 4.6. We talk all the time about guys like Redfield that come in with all the athleticism in the world, but playing slower than you would think because they aren't comfortable, take too long to process, hesitate, etc etc.

This kid is an example of somebody who if he can run a 4.6, will look much faster than that on the field. He has great instincts, and he completely trusts his instincts and attacks. Nicco is decisive, and although Anello was a great ST player he did not have the ability Nicco has, not even close. Comparing what Nicco could become to Bob Sander's isn't any more far fetched IMO than saying he will not be much more of an impact player all around than Anello was.

There is a reason the staff offered him and took his commitment fairly early in the cycle and it shows out on his film.

Also, Sanders ran a 4.75 and had like a 32-33 inch vertical when he got to Iowa....just sayin'

Sorry, I guess I just figured those were your expectations because you responded to my statement about my own expectations. I have no doubt that this kid has an amazing work ethic - he's going to be a 5-9, 175lb Division 1 football player. I doubt there's a single Division one player that didn't have some semblance of a work ethic and for a kid that size, Fertitta has to have an even greater work ethic. Pound for pound I'm sure his work ethic is about as high as any 2015 kid in the country.

Basic rule of thumb says you can go to a recruits page and add anywhere from .1-.2 to the listed 40 time and this would be a more accurate number for the players true speed. If that's the case he's running between a 4.65 and a 4.75. He may be able to add weight and run a 4.6 (legitimately), but it's going to be VERY difficult for a player of that height to add 20lbs of muscle and maintain his speed.

Bob Sanders was also a 2 time pro-bowler, he was All-Pro, and 2007 NFL defensive players of the year. I'd say it's Much more far fetched to compare Nicco to Sander's as opposed to Anello. I've seen "insider" posts and read stories that make no bones about it - Fertitta was brought in or someone to take 'ownership' or accountability for special teams. To be the captain of special teams.

There is a reason the staff offered him and took his commitment fairly early in the cycle and it shows out on his film.

I think the reason actually paid off yesterday for us, and hopefully in the years to come! ND would benefit greatly by establishing a pipeline to Gorman.

Also, Sanders ran a 4.75 and had like a 32-33 inch vertical when he got to Iowa....just sayin'

Sanders' wiki page says he improved his 40 time while at Iowa from a 4.6 to a 4.35 and a 33 inch vert to a 41.5....That said - Bob Sanders was a freak of nature and when he was healthy he was one of the best Safeties in the NFL.

I agree with this...tough as nails, going to sell out and leave it all on the field every play...the kind of kid if you pick a fight with him you better be committed to killing him, because he isn't going to stop coming at you until you do...the funny thing, regardless of his worth, if you look at pictures of his pops, he looks like he's got a little...ok maybe a lot of crazy in him too...in a badass way.
Fact: They may come in all shapes, sizes and degrees of athleticism and ability...but if you end up with 85 kids with Nicco's heart and attitude on your team you are not going to lose many games.

You will lose every game if they are all his size. Can you imagine Nicco blocking Lou?

I personally like kids who grew up having something to prove. This kid has been told everything was given to him his whole life. In turn has had to work harder than others to prove that it wasnt given to him.

Nicco plays with a badass, dont give a F attitude that will be contagious. I want him for that reason alone. Eben though he couldn't catch me in the open field.

Personally, I love having kids like Nicco around!

We could play one of those teams that likes to run their 350 pound lineman down at the goal line, and I could see Fertitta anxiously looking to make the initial collision... And somehow winning.

Go home Curt, you're drunk.

At 180 lbs. I successfully could chop block a 300 lbs. DT. He landed on me and knocked the wind out, but he went down.

On Power Hour they're predicting that Fertitta will be a captain someday, has the killer instinct and leadership the team needs. They don't think he may be an every down starter, but they think he could be an awesome role player like the way we used Farley this year (Pointed out Farley was #2 in sacks, #1 in INTs, very good TFL). They think he will be a force on Special Teams right away.

Collinsworth 2.0

I think he will be a much better player for Notre Dame than Collinsworth and that no knock against him. This kid looks ready to rumble and knows what it takes to win.

im always nervous about smaller safeties though with reputations as being "heavy hitters" because when i hear that i automatically think "shoulder injuries"

McCarthy before Collinsworth too haha. I believe now we will have had a white #28 Safety on the roster every year going back to 2005.

Pretty excited to have this kid here though. Hoping for a few big plays on special teams and I think he gets good playing time against the option teams. We've gone through the motions the last two seasons against Navy...something tells me this kid will show up to play that game.
